Is there a direct correlation between the diet you feed your suggies and the smell they produce? I have been feeding the SunCoast diet and it has been working out pretty well but I feel that I am always fighting the smell issue. I wipe down the bottom of the cage with Lysol wipes inbetween cleanings, use vinigar and water to clean the bars weekly, use Carefresh for the cage trays and change that regularly.

I would like to hear from many of you that use the various diets to learn about smell reduction. I am considering a switch in diet if that will help. I was looking at PML and BML but am open to hear from those that use others as well. Please let me know your thoughts.

I use the HPW diet and have 20 gliders (not counting the 5 joeys I have in my home right now) and there is hardly any smell at all.

I believe the diet has a LOT to do with it. The main times I can actually smell my gliders is 1)on cleaning days, when I pressure wash the cage, the next day you can tell they have been out marking. 2)when some of my females are in season, the males go on a marking spell.

If you feel it is the diet, all you can do is change it and see if that does indeed help your issue. thumb

Thanks Peggy.

Where is the best place to get the Wambaroo Powder? Also, where can you get the bee polen?

Peggy, do you use the breeder formula (with twice the powder) of the HPW diet, or just the regular version?

Jenni, Peggy sells both the Wombaroo and the bee pollen, just click on the Critter Love link in her signature wink

I switched mine from Suncoast to HPW. Although I clean the bottom tray and wipe the bottom bars down every day, the smell is much better than it was with Suncoast. Most people can smell my cats before they do the gliders when they walk in my house now. The gliders are in my living room.

Thanks Thumper. My cage is in the living room as well. I ordered the supplies for HPW yesterday. How long did it take before you noticed a difference once your suggies began the HPW diet?

I switched mine about a month ago and it seems like it only took a couple of weeks. My family agrees with that. I loved the Suncoast diet because it seemed so easy but once you make up the HPW it isn't hard. I even made some veggie relish & fruit smoothie's which made feeding time even easier. I picked up some really neat containers at Wal-Mart that are the perfect size for the HPW too. It's Rubbermaid Premier Food Storage (clear w/black lid) for 5 cups. The lid won't close unless you "burp" it. I don't get out much. lol

I also have switched from the SunCoast diet to the HPW diet. They've been on the HPW diet around 4 months (?). Personally, I haven't noticed much of a difference.

I have 24 suggies, not counting the 2 joeys newly oop. I switched from Judie's version of BML to HPW the end of Oct. I've noticed the smell has gone down A LOT...even with a few unfixed males. smile

Thanks everyone. I cant wait to get my supplies so I can get started on the HPW diet. I will have to learn more about the veggi relish and fruit smoothies.

One additional question. How long does one batch of HPW last? Are there any issues with doubling and storing it in the freezer? I have 2 suggies.

I store mine is a tupperware container. One batch lasts me about a month - with 6 gliders. It makes quite a lot and with only 3 teaspoons for every two gliders, it does last. I would just keep it covered in the freezer to prevent frost burn taste. I don't think doubling it would hurt, just might not be needed. grin

I make a double batch and it lasts me about 2 weeks...give or take a little. I can't remember EXACTLY how long anymore. Lol. Then again, that is with 24 suggies and 2 joeys newly oop! Lol

A regular batch lasts my three about 1.5 months.

Wonderful, thanks everyone. If I am reading the diet correctly, there are no restrictions on what fruits/veggis you give them (other than toxic veggis, of course), just give them a mix of both each night. Is that correct? I want to ensure I do the right thing for my little fuzzbuts.

Yes. I do pay attention to the Ca:P ratios in the veggies and fruit and try to get as close to 2:1 as possible. I don't feed corn, except as an occasional treat. My guys love peas, but I try to get them to eat more carrots and green beans.

Others will be along to give you more ideas!

The smell issue is major for me too. I also ordered supplies to switch from BML to HPW. I ordered from Sheila at Toandfro.com I'm glad someone posted to expect 2 wks as I was wondering how long it would take to see a change.

Wow, this all makes sense. I am on Suncoast and frankly...my girls STINK! I never thought it had anything to do with their diet. I also tend to smell pretty bad after tent time. I have been throwing up the idea of swiching diet for some time. Maybe I will look through it.

Another thing that I noticed today about the smell was the fleece items. Even though I clean several things each day/every other day, there was still a slight odor because I normally clean those things once/week except their pouch (every other day). Changing the fleece things seems to help a lot too. They don't seem to be bothered by my constant cleaning.

Even though you are cleaning them alot they will mark them as soon as they come out to play.

Yes I do realize that. But they don't smell as badly as if I were to not clean things for several days.

Oh I totally agree, if you don't clean all the time then they will definately smell worse.

Yippie!!! I got my Wambaroo and bee polen today. I will make up a batch this weekend. Can someone help me on the Ca:P ratios? I know I saw some info on that somewhere around this site but I'm not sure where. What are the main things to keep in mind when it comes to the ratios?

Once again, thanks for everyones help.

You can also get .pdf about Ca:P and oxalate levels from a member called LuckyGlider.
