I am having some probs with Butters and I don't know if it's cause he isn't neutered. He loves to hang on me, but lately he has been doing this nipping! It is really painful. He caught me in the corner of the eye not too long ago. Man that brought tears to my eyes. Also, he will grab a hold of my sweatshirt and nip at it while scooting his entire body from side to side. It's really funny, but I think he is marking territory???? He also won't keep his head out of Caylee's bum! He is always cleaning her and she is always cleaning, so I'm wondering if she is preggers. Anyway, back to Butters. It's so hard to disciplin a suggie! Any ideas?? I still have tent time, but I can't do it for long because he gets so excited he nipps! I need all the help I can get. I'm starting to look like a pin cushion, lol.

Well if he is really young or if he is going through puberty, it is just a nipping stage. It's kinda like a teen rebelling. Haha I am one! But anyway, i'm pretty sure if he's in that range (goin through puberty age is about 8-12 monthes out of pouch)that he is testing you and actin likea teen. If that is the case he will grow out of it. If not when he bites make a tsssst or pssssst noise when he bites(this has worked for me ), sort of like a momma glider tellin a baby glider not to do something. But never physically descipline a glider! I hope this helps! Alex

I know it's not puberty, from what I understand he is 6-7 years old (keep in mind he was a rescue so who really knows!). I will try the new noises to see what happens. Also, I let him lose in my bedroom for a couple hours (supervised) and he really seemed to calm down. Maybe he just needs more room than a tent!

I have also read a thread about gliders that mark their territory by rubbing their teeth on you. Magic has been rubbing his teeth on me since I got him. So far he has not broken skin. The bites your shirt and rubs his bottom back and forth is also a marking thing. Magic's previous human mom warned me about that one.

Watching mine play, I've seen several different kinds of bites.
There's the "Kill it! Kill it!" bite, where they pounce with their front paws and bite down sharply and hold. I think that's a prey-subdual bite. Mine haven't bitten me like this before, but they do it to the feather teasers.
Then there's the "What's inside?" bite, where they bite and then pull back sharply. I wasn't sure what that was about, they seem to do it to soft large things like mouse pads. I got them some fresh branches, though, and its their bark-stripping bite. They do this to my shirt sometimes, usually when they want in a pouch or smell something odd.
If they bite you like this, it might mean he smells something tastey and figure it's "underneath" so they want to strip the bark off. They do this to my wife's hair every time she uses a certain product.
Then there's the "No" bite. When I'm doing something they don't like, they'll turn and purposefully bite on my hand. Never hard, usually when they're displeased because I'm putting them back into the cage and they want to stay out. GP does it if I 'grasp' him predatorily. He has a thing about wrapping elastic hair ties around himself that I have to get off.
Then there's the "Grooming" bite. They'll usually lick a few times and then bite bite bite pretty softly in the same place or in a little line. I return the favor by giving them soft little fur pinches in a line. They seem to respond to that.
So it might help to figure out what kind of bite it is to find out if they think there's food, or they're mad, or they're grooming you.
Mine also have the "What's This?" bite. It's sort of like the "No" bite, just a single bite that's usually not too hard, but pretty firm, when they come across something new. Mine have a bad habbit of doing it to new people though.

fjeastman, What a great post! It is nice to see the different bites described! I think it is the first time I have seen them all described in on post before. But you forgot one.
I am fortunate to have never experienced this one but...
There is the Pit Bull Bite! This is where they bite down, hard, and won't let go. They can also shake their heads back and forth to inflict more pain. I know Monster would love to know why they do this one! Right Gina?????

I could have missed the pain But I'd of had to miss the dance
