Saturday night my suggie unexpectedly died. That night my sister told me to come upstairs, that my sugar glider was going crazy and making a wierd noise. When I went upstairs he was hanging upside down yelling and screaming [ he wasn't barking ]. It was a sound he had never ever made before. I just thought that he was upset because my sister had a friend over to spend the night or, because there was a dog in the room. I took him out and he was very upset, so to calm him down I told my sister to go get a mandarin orange, she tried to give it to him and he bit her. I just figured he bit her because he wasn't used to her. But, when I tried to feed it to him, he took hold of the skin on my pinkie nuckle and wouldn't let go. I am used to him biting me sometimes, but he never ever bit me like this before, I thought he would stop,so I waited, but he just kept biting down harder and harder and he wouldn't let go. It really started to hurt so I shook my hand a little and he fell on the floor. I picked him up and put him back in his cage. He wouldn't stop making the noise all this time. Then he kept going up and up his cage and hanging upside down, falling, and going back up. again and again. He stoped making the noise so much, but he still did a little. By now i'm really worried. I tried to see if he would eat corn, glider grub, or mandrain oranges. He wouldn't eat any of it. Neither would he drink any water. But he would stick a little bit of his toungue out to barely lick the orange. He kept trying to walk in one direction (by now he started getting really slow, but he wouldn't stop). He would look strait up at the ceiling, he kept doing this also, when he was in his cage and during the few times he was still. I put him back in his cage and he kept climbing up and falling down again. I thought he was really sick so i stuck him in his nestbox and made sure he had some covers and stuff to cuddle up in. There was no way to keep him there, i mean there was a way he could go out of the nestbox and into his cage if he wanted to, the way it always is. I went downstairs to talk to my dad about him. I went online to look for a vet in our area. I went upstairs to get a blanket for one of the girls, and when I did I checked on him. He kept scratching the ceiling of his nestbox and going nuts like he was claustrophobic and he couldn't get out. Then all of a sudden he just stopped, and I opened the nestbox to confirm what I suspicioned had just happened. My suggie was dead.
I was just wondering if this has happened to anyone else's sugg and if it has, if you know anything about why it happend. I have a new baby boy sugg and any input you can give me would help a lot, so that maybe I can prevent this from happening again.

I am so sorry for your loss, is there any way you can have a necropsy done, so you know what happened and can make sure it doesn't happen to your other one? I have never heard of any behavior like that, maybe someone else has. Again, I am sorry you lost your baby. Sending you glider hugs from all my crew!

Words seem so inadequate at times like this.

My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I feel your pain.....

Do you think you can take him to a vet to have a necropsy done, to determine the cause of death ?

I don't know what to say, neither have i ever heard of a glider acting that way.

My thoughts are with you right now. Remember gliders hide illness very well and most of the time when their owners finally notice weird behavior it's too late. Please don't blame yourself for your gliders passing.

One of the only things I could think of that might cause this sudden spaztic behavior is something neurological. I'm not sure from what or what kind of neurological disorder it could be. Something like a seizure or stroke? A necropsy would probably answer your question of what happened though.

Courtney & Will,
that was my thought also, and neurological things can also be caused by poison.

I have a hunch this glider might have ingested something toxic.

A necropsy would really help bring to light the cause of death.

It is difficult to say as to why he died. Most problems with gliders.... over half of them are diet related. The diet and Nutrition forum may be a good place to start.

Might consider having your other gliders vet checked for at least a routine fecal or smear to at least rule out a possible parasitic or protozoa problem.

Wish you well with your remaining gliders. <img border="0" alt="heart" title="" src="graemlins/heartpump.gif" />
