I've had zeke for about a month. He was apparently well tamed to a previous owner then sold to a pet store where he spent 2 months until I rescued him. I'm trying all the bonding tricks in the book but he still thinks I'm really scary unless I come with a snack. He'll tolerate me petting him slowly for a few seconds then he bites. Should I try getting him a friend?

Id keep going with the treats, try and tempt him onto your hands with a tiny bit of honey. Take him out during the day when he is sleepy and put him down ur top, or in a pouch and just gently reasure him by stroking him and talking softly, Im sure he will come round eventually! It is a good idea to get him a friend, because they are so social. Goodluck with the bonding process, and let us know how he goes

I have been told the same thing, regardless if he was bonded to previous owner, that two months in a pet store scared him!!! Yes, there will be a time when he will bond to you, might take a little long though. It sounds like he isnt fully scared of you, just takes some time!!! Have you checked out the Bonding Links ???

My first male was near wild when I got him. The fact that yours was tame before means the process should be quicker. You already know he's a survivor or he would have wasted away in grief by now. Remember, they form attachments for life. A relationship like that doesn't happen overnight. Be patient and give him time. Sit in a safe room and let him come to you on his own terms. Keep offering him snacks and keep trusting him even if you know he will bite. If you watch and observe his behavior you'll be able to anticipate his bite and ward it off gently before it happens. It was two years before my wild one would let me pet him and would take food from my fingers without a sneak attack to make me drop it first! Don't give up on him.

Aw. I'd definately suggest a friend.
Generally with gliders it's: "As much room as you can and as many gliders as you can afford."
We only have two now, but we're hoping to get two more and get a little non-breeding colony going. They're happy to be with me, but I can tell they're so much happier doing "glider things" together.
After all, I can't quite squish myself sideways and flat to go behind the dresser, and I can't run back and forth upside down under the bed. All kinds of fun stuff a human can't do.

I would just try to be as patient as possible. I have had a few rescues that took months to warm up to me. Just keep at it, he will come around.

That is what my male glider is like and I have had him for 6 months but he never had an owner before me and he was not tame at all when I got him. I would wait to get him a friend for a while so he will bond with you easier.

Don't get discuraged, this little guy needs you. When I got my older male, he was left in a cage with his dead mother, and wasn't fed right or anything. I can't even go into the story without getting upset, but I spent hours with him. He bit me and seemed as though he was never going to bond, but he eventually did. It took a month to get him even to let me touch him and then another month to get him to go into my sports bra. Four months after that he bonded with me. When you get a glider that has been tramatized, especially at a pet store (I used to work at a pet store and I know that they have a tendancy to take bad care of animals at times.), there is a chance he may never bond, and if he does he may only bond enough to trust you in his territory-or in other words his cage. I'm not trying to scare you but it is a risk you take getting a tramatized glider. I have heard scarier stories and seen worse gliders bond. It jsut takes time.

I'm planning on giving it a few months before I invest in another glider. Last night I was really encouraged, we played with feathers for about an hour, and he jumped on my hand twice. This is the first time he has came to me, and he didn't stay long but it helped alot. thanks for all the replies.

hey I agree, just have patience, it took Jaxom almost a year to come around, and now he's so bonded I can't get rid of him, lol, he jumps right back to his mommy when I put him on people's shoulders, he's now the first to come out for treats, and is just a general joy now. He was 3 when I got him and had been through at least 3 homes already. It WILL happen, just give it time and patience!
