i have to tell you about our 4 day ordeal with no electric and lights in an ice storm with 25 degree weather outside. well the first night wasnt too bad as we have travel cages from k and d exotics and put them next to our gas fireplace which i had a thermometer and the temperature was 69 degrees. i also wrapped around the cages a down blanket for xtra warmth. for food i gave them fancy feast canned cat food and fresh fruit/ which i kept in the garage as it was ice cold there and had alot of red apples grapes kiwi which do good without refrigeration too for veggies i used jars of sweet potatoe. they got their mealies and since the bml was bad and thawed i dumped it and used the fancy feast one day insectivore diet another and i keep xtra monkey biscuits and what we grilled on the gas grill outside chicken and filet minon with a dab of repcal on it. i think i minded the no electric more than the gliders. they all did well. if we didnt have the fireplace i think i would of got in the car and headed south as in the car it gets very warm with the heater on.

I'm glad that your gliders did well under these conditions. I can completely relate as am still without power at home in Cary. My very first concern when it went out wed. night was my babies! (see: "They're in Love" under bonding and relationships) We bundled up and waited till daybreak, planning to head out in search of heat. The only people that I knew who had it welcomed me but NOT my babies! I'm sure that you can guess my response to that! Luckily, by late afternoon the power was on at my school and we have been staying here ever since. I took in one of my teachers and family w/3 kids who were w/o power. I never would have even considered not to just because of the kids (human) which are certainly alot more trouble than my babies! These other people with power still don't understand why I won't leave my gliders here at the school and come to their house to stay. They just don't get it! Oh well, that's their loss LOL.

I wish that I could have known about you and your situation as you would have been very welcome here with me and mine. Do you have power now? If so, good. If not, PM me and we'll get together. I need to open the school today but do have a separate, safe place for the gliders to stay here. I have a private school here in Raleigh. Either way, I'd like for us to get in touch and be prepared for next time.

I am glad both of you made it through without losing your babies.

Nailteach,
i can only say it irks me how ignorant some people are about pets, no matter what pets they are.

I have to say i would have cussed them out, and told them off big time, for welcoming me, at the expense of losing my pets.

I can just imagine what you might have said, after all you have been through recently.

Take care, Tanja

From time to time we have discussions about what to do in emergencies. I think this is a great discussion to continue in Real Stories. What can you do to make sure your gliders are safe in the event your heat is out in the winter?

If our heat goes out, we are still set for the winter, as we also have a wood burning stove that gets used for emergencies like that. We have enough fire wood to last all winter long.

I purchased a propane heater that doesn't need elect to run. But I don't know when I can get it professionally installed as the pros are all very busy right now. Kerosene was suggested to me but I didn't think that the fumes/smell would be good for them. I know it makes me a little nauseous. I'm still not positive about the propane either and would appreciate any feedback from someone more experienced with alternative heat sources

I have a generator and woodstove--too far out for electric or gas service. Anyone in my area who temporarily needs a warm place to stay is welcome but ONLY if you bring your gliders, LOL.
(Oh, and you have to be REALLY tolerant of non-glider animals.)

Winchester got hit hard with the ice storm. we are on top the mountain now so we prepared ourselves great..we got one of those propaine heaters up to 80.000 btu's we could have heated the neighborhood.

we also got a generator just in case, i doubled up on the babies made a double layerd pouch and threw in some extra blankies.we were ready for anything.

we didnt have to use any of it thank goodness. but we will be ready for the next one..i am waiting for about 4 foot of snow! YIPPEE!

Bonkers,
Storms can be a wonderful thing IF you have everything that you need and want locked inside with you
So, you believe that propane is safe to use around gliders? I had asked this question of propane as well as kerosene, but didn't get any answers

well i can relate. We also were out of power for four days..then again briefly (couple hours) a few days later. We moved all of the animals into the living room and all cuddle up near the fireplace. I wish we had a gas log fireplace though..would have been alot easier than carrying wood in left and right and taking turns staying up at night to tend the fire...sigh..over all we did okay though. It stayed around 55-60 degrees in our living room and all the gliders did fine through it. We wrapped the cages up in blankets on the back and sides of the cages.

We did without eletric for 6 days here. It was like a small petting zoo in our kitchen. We had 6 glider cages and all 12 of our hedgies in there. We had to use kerosene for heat or we would not have had any. It stayed nice and toasty with most of the house closed off. The eletric went out on Weds. night then on Sat. morning I had to go to the hospital to have the baby and boy that was a 3 ring circus because I stayed there till the eletric came back on and my hubby had to run up and down the road 3 plus times a day to keep the heat going for the wee ones and of course their feedings. WE ARE DEFINATLEY INVESTING IN A GENERATOR BY NEXT YEAR!!
