That's what all the websites say, but a single glider will be just fine if you give it a sufficient amount of playtime/bonding time. It is a good choice to have two, because they can play with eachother, but having just one glider would be just fine if you can give it the attention it needs. Good luck with everything!

I also agree that gliders can get along fine as single as long a they get a lot of attention and from what you say I am sure you'll do fine with one. But on the other hand I still feel that gliders like to have little buddies to play with. So its okay to have one but its double the fun when you have two. Or in my case 5! LOL.

It is okay to have just one glider if you give it A LOT of playtime and bonding time. I started out with just one glider and I gave her a lot of playtime and I carried her in a bonding pouch all day, but she still got depressed and was barking a lot at night because she was lonely. So I decided to get her a friend and now she is much happier. I think it is a lot better to have two than one and two is not much more work than one. But if you cannot get more than one it would be okay as long as you give it a LOT of play and bonding time. If it is at all possible you should get two, no matter how much time you spend with them they will never be as happy as they would if you have two.

I disagree..although a single glider may live a happy healthy life, it would be much happier and much healthier with a friend. No matter how much time and affection you shower your glider with, there is no substitute for another glider.
However, you may want to look for a 'lone glider'. There are a few gliders out there who actualy prefer to be alone!

I disagree as well. When i first got gliders I had ONE. That was my Stitch. I was home ALL THE TIME...and she was out with me ALL THE TIME. Plenty of attention. Eventually she stopped eating and got depressed. I took her to the vet and they agreed she was just depressed and lonely. As soon as i bought Badger....she started eating and was ok again. I STRONGLY am aginst owning just one!

Just imagine yourself in a home except for a couple of hours a day, being fed by some other species that doesn't speak your language. Will you survive? Of course. Will you be completely happy??????

Oh My! That sounds like a life in a retirement home.

Yea, I'd definately suggest at least two, myself. As I say ... I can't play behind the dresser. I can't run upside down under the bed.

I'd love to have 4 of them so they could have a little colony atmosphere. Hopefully after the summer I'll have the financial means to buy 2 more and introduce them all.

Gliders are nothing if not an investment. If you shop around, some of the (I think) better breeders will offer a lower price per-glider for getting 2 or more to encourage giving them the proper environment.

sara-I'm not sure where you live, but Priscilla has a 2 for 1 deal going on still I think. Her website is The Pet Glider She is in Texas and is probably one of the best breeders around. She got bombarded with males earlier this year, so she was selling two males for the price of one. Not sure if she still is. You may have to get them shipped by airplane, but it's actually about the same price as a sugar glider. So, two gliders, one free, shipping price....comes out to the price of just two gliders, BUT you get them from a safe reputible breeder

I have to agree with everyone saying to get 2. When I got my first glider, Pilot, he was alone for about the first month and a half while we waited for my girls to be old enough to come home. I figured he'd be alright since it was just short term and I work from home, so I'm here all the time. Well, during that time he did seem alright but boy oh boy, did I notice a BIG difference when the girls finally arrived! Pilot totally perked up, plays a ton more, and is so much less nervous than he was before. He used to get real startled any time I made any sudden movements like brushing hair out of my eyes or reaching up to scratch my face, etc., etc. But once he had his new playmates, he stopped doing that. He's just so much more relaxed now and seems a lot happier !

I think if you only get one glider they will be lonely and not live as long as they would if they had a mate.

I have a single glider. I would love to pair him with another, but the girl I got him from tried to 3 times. She got him neutered and tried 3 more times, with no luck, females, males and even someone from the same parents he wouldnt accept any of them. I spend alot of time with him, but if I thought I could find a friend he would accept I would in a second. I think having a friend is always best for them!

Well even if you give it alot of attention you cant be with it at all hours of the night. My glider gets lonley at night until i go to to his room then he stops barking and waits for me to open his cage to play. I am looking to find another glider for him but until then i usually wake up around 3am and sit in his room and let him play around for awhile then i go back to bed.

Hi, Sara! I had Widget for 3 years before getting Mini. I spent lots of time with Widget and never had problems with her eating. That said, I advise having two gliders. Even though Widgie seemed happy to me, everything I ever read indicated that she should have a friend. I imagined how I would feel with out any human companionship and as a result, felt so bad for her. I have a friend for her now and the acclimation process is taking awhile. They bicker. But, had I purchased two, particularly sibling females, I would not have had this problem. So, having experienced the good, the bad and the ugly of both (LOL) get that second glider! Besides, you'll have more to love!

I got all of my gliders one at a time and they were all fine. The first one was by himself for 5 months and he is just a sweetie. It's all down to time. You need to spend at least 3 hours a day with just one glider...every day...you cannot miss days and think the glider will be happy. To make things easier you should get two. Since they are in the same cage it won't give you more work to have two than to have one, but if on the off chance you cannot spend 3 hours to play with them one day, they will not mind.

I know a lot of people who only have one, though and that one gets so spoiled that they are very happy and healthy. So, it's all up to you whether one will work out.

I would think that it depends a bit on the glider as well. We just like gliders are social animals. Yet you will run across the occasional unsociable person who prefers to be alone.
I have heard of the occasional glider who prefers to be alone as far as gliders are concerned and actually prefers to have human company when they want someone around. This type of glider does exist but is fairly rare and on that note I would have to say get two as most gliders seem to be happier with some same species company.

my main concern with getting a sole glider is how your life 10 years down the road will affect the bond with your glider. Personally i can not say where ill be in 2 years much less 10 years from now. Dont get me wrong i might have one of these odd ball lone gliders but he does live in the cage with the others and were debating on moving him and seeing how he does. Or just moving him on the really bad nights. But back to subject here erin, I would worry that getting a lone glider that builds such a strong bond with you then situations change and your not home all the time anymore then you decied to get another one or ya just get the glider virus and NEED to get more. but if this glider only knows you then i dont know how well it would accept something of its own as we see it but it might see another glider as a strange creature.
