We made a mad dash to the vets office Saturday. The vet gave him a 50 50 chance it appeared that he had an infection that was affecting his liver because he was yellow. We are back in Illinois (I was in St louis fo rwork during that time) We just got back from our regualr vet . Arwin has been responding to the antibiotics very well, and getting back to his rotten self. Our vet did blood work and said the blood work shows that it is lymphoma which affected his immune system which caused the infection. Arwin is a year old and has lead a very sheltered life. BML vegetables cooked chicken and fruit. Regular vet visits ect. Henry his play mate appears to be very healthy and the vet saw him and agreed. HELP! Does anyone have any information on this?

Edited to add:

There is another glider here who has lymphoma. I am sure his companion will be along a little later today to talk to you. (private email sent) His name is Lord Darcy, and he is thriving like you wouldn't believe...have hope! Actually, I call him Mr. Stud.

Arwin, my sincere sympathy goes out to you.
Lymphoma is a type of blood cancer. It can manifest itself in a variety of ways.
Back this spring, Darcy developed pneumonia, and during treatment, his blood tests showed lymphoma, which Dr. Tracy said was the real cause of the pneumonia (I had been beating myself up thinking I had somehow caused it.)
Since May, Darcy has been on 0.025cc Prednisone every other night, and 0.25cc B vitamins (VAL syrup) every night. He is now a VERY picky eater. Dr. Tracy's prognosis in May was that he would live "a few weeks to a few months, depending on his reaction to the medications" and to "feed him anything he likes." (Darcy dropped from 189 to 87 grams in less than two months.)
One side effect of antibiotics is repressed appetite. If Arwin is on antibiotics for a lengthy time--Darcy spent about a month on Baytril--he will probably lose weight.
Also, you might want to check out
www.lymphoma.org
Interestingly, when Dr. Tracy conferred with Cornell, they said they've seen a lot of sugar gliders develop lymphoma between 3.5 and 4.5 years old--yet Arwin is only one year?

By the way, I was assured by my vet that I could not have prevented Darcy from developing lymphoma, so I would assume the same for Arwin. The very fact that he is alive today is a result of your efforts, so don't blame yourself. Lymphoma has no known cause or cure.

On a more positive note, Darcy is still looking good and acting normally, and he even produced two miracle twins with his Lady Elva after being diagnosed, who are thriving.
Good luck to you both.

PS--Lymphoma is not contagious. Arwin cannot make Henry ill. If Henry develops lymphoma, it will likely be a genetic predisposition, since human research can find no cause for it. Is he a blood relative of Arwin?

PPS--Yes, I'm aware that Darcy's children are at risk for developing lymphoma like he did, but I desperately need some part of my beloved Darcy to continue on, and it's by no means certain that they will develop it.

Kathy got her gliders from us and I was also worried about genetics. Now Henry and Harry have seperate parents so the chances of him getting it should be extremely low. Now Arwins mom is approx. 4 years old and Arwins dad is 3 years old and have never showed a sign of illness to this point in their lives. They have had other babies before and after Arwin and to my knowledge no problem with them as well. Now that probally doesn't totally rule out genetics, but makes it less likely.Unless his grandparents had this, but I don't know their history at all. I sure hope Arwin has plenty of time left with you Kathy as you are such a great glider mom. Arwin just turned a year old on 12/4/02. Kathy, you and Arwin are both in my thoughts and prayers and I know he is in the best of hands. You did everything right so this is not your fault at all hon. I feel so bad for you both. Big hugs coming your directions. Please keep us informed on your little <img border="0" alt="angel" title="" src="graemlins/frostyangel.gif" />

K&D Exotics, thank you for the reassurance. I'm impressed that you keep such meticulous track of the gliders you sell.

The Lymphoma Research Foundation says on their website:
"We do know that lymphomas are not caused by an injury and that you cannot get NHL [Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma] by being in contact with someone who has the disease."

"People who have a history of an infection with certain viruses may be more likely to develop NHL... However, a definitive link still has not been confirmed."

"There is also a slightly higher incidence of NHL in individuals who have a family history of the disease, although the risk is slim."

"...most people with risk factors never develop the disease. Many who are diagnosed have no identifiable risk factors."

These are excerpts; the entire page is at
http://www.lymphoma.org/site/PageServer?pagename=nhl#causes

There was another glider on GC, Geoffrey's Shug, diagnosed with lymphoma,
http://www.sugarglider.net/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=15;t=001452#000015
but there are no further posts than this thread, or at least none I could find using "lymphoma" as the search word, so I don't know how Shug fared.

Kathy--
How is Arwin doing? Is he happy and acting all right? Is he eating well? Is he on anything besides the antibiotics?

Darcy is still doing well (although on drugs for the rest of his life.) He remains active, alert and affectionate, looks good and behaves normally. This of course could change at any time without warning or reason, so I consider every day I have with him a gift.

Arwin may well live a quality life for quite awhile yet.
Like Ken and Danielle, I want to emphasize that you are doing all the right things --and love means a great deal to these little people, so give him tons of cuddling, and smooch him for me and Darcy.

Arwin could be doing much better. He gets up and his coloring looks much better. He will get up and eat and can still hop from one side of the cage to the other. Henry was being so nice with him until yesterday. I had to split them up. Arwin would go in a pouch and henry would go in and kick him out. Arwin is on Bayril once a day and enuclose twice a day. The vet wants to do another blood test in a few weeks. He was doing better before I let him do the last blood test. I want to wait until he feels much better before putting him through too much. The good news at the vets he actually weighed more than the last time we had a check up. I have always struggled with his weight. We will take it one day at a time.

Thanks for everyone's support
Kathy , Arwin, and Henry

Oh, Kathy, I'm so terribly terribly sorry. I had so hoped and prayed that he would hang in there, for himself--and for Darcy. As long as someone else had it and was surviving, it made lymphoma seem less scary--now, reading about your beloved Arwin makes Darcy seem so very fragile...
Smooch Henry extra, you can never kiss them enough.

I do not know how old Darcy is but from what I read about ferrets with lymphoma the older they are the more likely they are to live longer. Arwin was only 89 grams to begin withat a year old. We always struggled with his weight and it seemed as if I had him at the vets at least once a month for various reasons, but mostly weight lose, so I think he was probably was sick for awhile.

I wish the best for you and Darcy

Kathy,
Darcy is now four and a half years old. He was 189 grams before developing pneumonia--yes, he was kinda chunky, but you're right, that probably saved his life. Between the cancer, the pneumonia, and the various drugs, he lost over 100 grams, and it took him months to gain some of it back. He's at 134 this evening.
My heartfelt sympathy goes out to you; give Henry tummy rubs and smooches, because even if they live to be fifteen, that's still too short.
Glider hugs,
Donna

Thanks everyone for your support. It has been a very hard week. If he had to go I couldn't have wanted it any other way. He got out a little that morning week but active and ate a piece of apple from my hand. at about 11 am I put him back after twenty minutes of bonding time. Sorry this needs to be moved to true stories. (and I'm too emotional to write it twice) Continued from Arwin has lymphoma

I sent you a pm I do not think you got it. What I wondered was, who is your vet? I live in the same area as you. I am not to happy with my vet ( over all ) and want to look into a different one.

Monica and I send our condolences.
Dr Welle at All Creatures Animal Hospital is the best glider vet in Central and East Central Illinois, at least in my opinion. All of the "Roo Croo" see him. If there was any more that could have been done, I am positive he would have done it. Arwin is no longer in pain, and is living a happy life.
Kathy, remember, if you need anything, I am right down the road!!! Don't hesitate to ask for anything, and I do mean anything!!! Give little Henry a hug and a kiss for me!!!
