I have a cat and he's always on the top of the cage of my glider. The night, they seems to play together, my glider do some little noises and i think he likes the cat. but can it be a cause of stress or they just might be some good friends? Is it a good thing that i let them play together or shoud i seperate them?

To me seprate them my cat dont bother my gliders but still he is never left un supervised. I don't know if he is ausing the glider stress but could be. Also the cat may seem friendly but one day he may decide he wants the glider. So I would always supervise or seprate them.

the lady i got my older girl gliders from in late march had a cat that was very good natured and loved the gliders. she would rub against the cage and the glider would play with the fur. when i went to "meet" the girls i saw them and it didn't seem like either of them were afraid/upset with eachother .

if the cat bats at them or looks like its a tasty little snack i'd not leave them unsupervised together...

but as far as it stressing the glider out you should look at whether he hides/crabs or runs up to/plays with fur.

Well my cat loves to stare at my glider. One night my glider decided to escape and my grandmother's cat found it and chased it all over the house until my glider jumped on my grandmother and i heard a huge scream. my grandmother didnt know what was on her. When i picked up my glider and put him back in the cage he went right to bed. Ever since then he hissis at my cat. so it depends on the cat if they want to chase them or just stare at them. to the cat it looks like a jumping rat. So keep an eye on the two of them together.

Hmmmm. i think your kitty could be eying the cage and saying: "Thanks, Ma! I always knew you'd come through for me and give me my own snack attack pantry!" LOL! All kidding aside, I have 2 cats that absolutely love to watch Mini and Widgie. They are fascinated by the suggies and like the suggies, they are my babies. But NOT for ONE second do I trust them or would I risk it. Think about it. How much different does a suggie look from a mouse from a cat's perspective? And we all know what the natural instinct is there! And, quite often, when I catch mine near the cages, Sanura and Mao have the most guilty expressions on their faces, as they scurry out, just like they do when on the table. And no, originally when they just looked at them, I didn't chase them off; only when I saw paws reaching toward the cage (which they can't get into.)

And yes, I generally keep them away. They stress widgie, but not Mini.

The only possibility I see for a unique and exceptional relationship would be if a kitten grew up around suggies.

Good Luck!

Is your cat declawed? If not, I'd keep them separated. I'd never let them out together, even supervised, because at some point, instinct could take over. The glider (or the cat) could get hurt, even if unintentional. They're both just too quick!

My cats loves to sit on top of the glider cage too. He is declawed though. I think he just likes the height. He will watch them for a minute but i think they are more interested in him because they go straight up to the top of the cage. My cat doesn't do anyhting though but look at them. I still don't trust them alone together while my suggies are out.

***Oh, and be very careful...I forgot to mention that my cats open doors with their paws (Not claws). Once, I caught them in the act of lifting the slide up cage door (don't recommend this type of cage at all), so I had to use those plastic tie backs to secure the cage doors shut. This is a big pain, when it comes to cleaning, so if you have cats and are in the cage market, you might want to check out more expensive, hinged cages.)Also, if your cat seems good or is declawed, remember, it is their instinct to hunt mice and suggies look an awful lot like mice to them. Cat's are intelligent and curious—what might start as an innocent curiousity with the suggies, may kick into predator/prey mode when the suggies react, etc. I was just blessed that I discovered the situation with my cat's being so smart and that nothing more happened, after I secured the cages.

Take care,
Jen

I have a declawed cat who is younger than our gliders and the gliders have been around since she came home at 2 months old. I tried exposing the cat and gliders to eachother as much as possible when she was little but was nervous since she hadn't been declawed yet. She acted like she wasn't sure what to make of them.
Now she watches them and paws at them (through the cage that she can't get into). She still seems unsure of what to do with them but she seems to get that look in her eye sometimes. My gliders don't seem too upset about her and will just walk away when she paws at them. I make sure that she has no access without supervision and if the gliders are out of the cage they have to be on my person or out the cat goes. I just don't want to take any chances. Especially since she has shown the desire to pounce on them a time or two and it doesn't seem like innocent curiosity anymore.

My cats were getting on top of the cage, and I think it was stressing them out. I have since put hte cage on top of a wire rack and they seem to be doing much better.

Both our cats are declawed and Azhure always gives the gliders nose kisses when they come out for crickets. So depends on your kitty I think.

when i had rats, my maltese dogs would be interested in them, so id hold the dogs paw up to the chicken wire cage my rats were in. the rats would always run right over, not scared at all and play with the fur and smell, somtimes they would try pull the fur through the cage, lol. my dogs were scared of the rats and would run away ever time. lol.

yeah... my last two hairless male rats were completely free range, allowed to go in and out of their cage whenever they wanted... and Ox, my boyfriends cat was scared of them and they would totally chase him.... a huge maine coon mix cat being chased by two hairless rats is the funniest thing I havge EVER seen... it was riot! LOL

Sugar gliders can also hurt the cat's tail by biting it if it enters the cage. And the cat may seem nice, and then in turn get bored and want a snack.

I have 4 of the best-natured cats in the world (in my opinion) & we have rules established: yes, kitties can come into the glidertorium during the day when the gliders are sleeping. But when the sun goes down & the gliders come out, kitties are NOT permitted in the room. Period. My gliders will send out an "alert bark" if these rules are broken, which turns 7 suggies into 7 statues until the barking ceases. There is also the issue of toxemia which cats carry---this is DEADLY to a suggie! (Even if it's limited to a litterbox, who's to say that kitty didn't "clean himself" before making contact with a suggie?) I'd much rather be safe than sorry & keep a bit of distance between the 2 species.

I still personally think it depends on the cat. I trust my cats with the gliders. Some people may completely disagree with me, that's okay. My cat likes to enjoy a few crickets with the gliders when we give treats, and their interaction is ALWAYS supervised, but do I think my cat would ever turn on my gliders? Not on your life. It just won't happen. Gliders are not toys or food for my cats, and they do not treat them as such.

I was not aware of the Toxemia though, that's new info to me. The problem with being worried about this is what if kitty just got out of his box and sits on your couch, then you sit on the couch and pet kitty and it gets on you, then you go play with your gliders. Sorry, but it seems like something that could be HIGHLY and easily transfered whether my cats have direct contact with my gliders or not. My cats lay on the bed, my gliders play on the bed... I guess I don't understand how this is different than direct contact. They touch all the same stuff, the furniture, me, the carpet, etc. My conclusion then is that it's not the danger you make it sound, other wise your gliders, and mine too, would have died long ago of it.

I herd my Dusty bark for the first time last nite at 4:30am. His cage is in our room as we live in a studio apartment right now. We have a cat JD ( short for James Dean, he is a reble without a cause ) anyway i think Dusty was barking because JD was looking up at him as he played. That was the first nite JD was allowed to sleep up here with us since we got Dusty. As soon as we let JD out he stoped. i couldn't believe how smart he is to wake us up like that. I knew they are smart creatures, i am going to give him alot more credit from now on! I was really excited to hear him bark, he had not barked since we got him! With my crazy (SMART) cat I would not leave them alone in cage or out of cage un-suppervised.
