Glider Greetings....

I almost screwed up today!! It was a freak situation that i've never seen described before. Hope this saves someone else future misery.

Washed, cleaned and refilled the bottles for my crew early this morning. Couple of hours later, revisited my guys with some food to hold them since I was planning to be away overnight.

Lo...!!!!!!! The water bottle on one cage was completely EMPTY. Those critters would have been VERY thirsty....or worse.... by the time I returned home.

And now for the rest of the story.

During the bottle washing, the rubber gasket in the bottle cap fell out unbeknownst(bet this would screw up a spellcheck) to me. Because the gasket was not in place the water leaked out of the bottle over as period of several hours; but, was not leaking fast enough for me to notice it when I put the bottles back on the cage.

I was lucky.......learn from my mistake.

Randy,
you didn't say what was wrong with the waterbottle, but i can think of two things.
Numberone might be that the ball is stuck in a faulty tube, or the other which is what my gliders once did to one of my bottles: they actually chewed through the plasic, and it caused the bottle to loose vacum and therefore all the water.
I always inspect my waterbottles and check daily to make sure i don't miss out on anything.
I check the ball and push it back and let it slide forwards, to see if it doesn't leak more water than a few drops.
I also check the bottles over every day to see if the water level has gone down, and how much.

Thanks fopr the warning, but coiuld you let us know what happened to it ?

Thank for the warning. I don't use water bottles because I when I started to research gliders on this board, I read that someones gliders got there tongue caught in the bottle. Besides, I notice that my babies like to rinse there mouth in their water, lol. I think it is easier with the bowls to clean it out and put in fresh water.

Glider greetings

Sorry........

I was attacked by internet bandits and they stole the last part of my post.

It is now corrected.

hi and since i haven't met you yet, Welcome to Glider CENTRAL!! If you've been here please accept my embarrased apologies! If that is the one I think it is, you can fix it easily but have to be a bit ginger with it. If it is one with a clear bottle and havaheart, or hamster bottle or woodstream, (i don't know if those are allowed on a post, Lucy or Ellen, update me if needed)

1- open the lid, take the cap in your fingers and hold it. HARD.
2- take the tube in your other hand or fingers and shove until you can see no more bend in the metal.
3- This should fix it without any change in cost or need to purchase a new one. It took me three water bottles and my husband explaining physics to me to fix it.

You see, the bottle works fine! We don't need to all abandon ours, we just have to understand how it works. The bend is what restricts the flow. and controls the release of water. if the bend is showing, there is no vaccum at the other end of the water to create suction and so the water just falls out.

So, when you shove the metal curve all the way in, you fix it because the water doesn't just have to fall straight down. it has to work with gravity, suction and physics to regulate the water flow so that it does not gush.

You can leave a pm here with me or my email is ladyandtramp@loveable.com if anyone wishes to ask me questions. Sorry, that didn't print right. it's ladyandtramp@loveable.com Please remember, I am not a designer or a person who makes these. I just understand a bit about how it is supposed to work.

I sure hope this helped. If anyone else has info, PLEASE DON'T HESITATE! I AM VERY OPEN TO CRITICISM! please be polite. Everyone here DEFINATELY IS!!!!!!

Once again welcome!!!

Glider smooches and face hugs to all!

Gliderbuff

Greetings Gliderbuff

I've been around for a while....guess our paths just haven't crossed.

Thanks for the info.......i'm not real strong in Physics. Fortunately, my problem was pretty simple.....see my revised post.

Hello! (she says with a huge blush on her cheek) Sorry about that..... I read all of your post. Sorry I was not more clear. I posted because that is a possible way to fix without throwing bottles away. I didn't know if you or many others knew about that so i posted hoping it would help someone at least. That is the ONLY reason I post . To be of help. I am sorry you got a bypass without surgery! We all have fun learning, don't we!?!

I am so glad all has a happy ending.

Best to you and yours.

Gliderbuff.

Thanks for the very important warning Randy!!!

I know what you mean... Ive had the rubber gasket fall out during washing and not noticed it...luckily though after I got the top on and hooked it to the travel cage... I noticed the pool of water on the counter before I got the "kids" bundled up ready to go on a little trip... I took it apart and realized what had happened...found the rubber gasket laying in the sink.

Just in case one of our bottles starts to leak before we can catch it, my friend and I place a separate dish underneath it so that if it does happen to leak, it doesn't drip all over the cage and also allows the lil furrbutts to still be able to get some water if it all does leak out.

Easy solution for all is to use the bottles that have NO rubber gaskets. The gaskets are prone to bacterial contamination, even when washed sometimes-(as they age, they tend to conform to the bottle and invite wonderful hiding places for bacteria unless they are completely removed and washed thoroughly with bleach, soap, and hot water solution). Best recommendation is to use the bottles which have NO gaskets and to ALWAYS check the vacuum when you sterilize bottles and refill before returning to the gliders' cages. Bottles are MUCH safer alternative to dishes! Dishes are a welcome invitation to urine, feces, thrown food, etc. which can contaminate water faster than you may possibly get it changed. As for glider tongues getting stuck in bottle...I suppose it may be possible, but the probability of this occurring is between slim and none and slim left town! You could swallow your toothbrush and choke to death too, but the probability is rather negligible! Stick to the gasketless 8 oz. bottles with double stainless steel ball vacuum, clean and sterilize every other day, and ALWAYS check vacuum for proper operation prior to use EACH & EVERY TIME. You'll have a safe and virtually bacteria free source of clean drinking water!

Gimborn-(gasketless) and Lixit-(not sure if these are gasketless-??) Water Bottles are readily available from numerous sources! (Gimborn are available at your local Wal-Mart stores)

Thanks for the heads up Randy!! I'm always checking the ball but never thought to check the ring inside the lid. I will from now on.
