Hey, I just wanted to share something with everyone. Usually when you wash fruits and vegetables there is still a layer of pesticides on them when you're done unless you use soap. Who wants soap residue on something they're going to feed their gliders or their family, right? Well I bought some Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE) at the health food store as an antibiotic for my sons. I was reading online all the different uses and found out that you can use it to wash fruits, vegetables and meats. It is completely safe to use because it is a fruit derivative and it cleans all of the pesticides off completely! I've been using it for a few weeks now. It works great. It's not that expensive and you only use a few drops at a time.
Anyway, I hope this info can be useful to someone.
P.S. Check out online all the uses for this stuff. It is awesome!

How expensive is it? That might be worth it but with how many gliders I have I might have to save LOL

Lemon juice can be used the same way. The acids break down the chemicals sprayed on the fruit/veggies. You can also cook fish with lemon juice (and no heat). The acid is so stong that it actually can cook the meat and it will even turn white.

Sorry, haven't been on in a while. Cleaning for a visit from the in-laws! Anyway, I got a bottle with over 1200 drops in it for $10 a the health food store. For most things you only use a few drops so it should last a long time! The only problem is the bottle doesn't come with any usage instructions so you must look on the internet. Here is a link to one site that tells how to use it: http://www.naturalmeals.com/GSE.htmlAnd here is a great article about it. It talks all about how people are using it with birds: http://www.landofvos.com/articles/kitchen7.htmlIf birds, then why not gliders?

I've always hated the thought of pesticides and other chemicals on my food, that's why I get organic as much as possible. But due to the expense of certain items it isn't always possible (although the price is rapidly falling on more common veggies and fruits). There are also products out there like "Wash Dem Veggies" that are an all natural (uses extracts of corn, orange and few others I believe) and are biodegradable. It gets the fruit or veggie just as clean as using soap without worrying about any residues. Apple cider vinegar and water is another natural solution to getting the waxes and chemicals off of you fruits and veggies. I'll post the link below for the product I mentioned. I'm actually seeing it in regular grocery markets which is really nice. Hope this helps Wash Dem Veggies

Just curious: how do you KNOW all the pesticides are gone? Still, I guess citrus flavored pesticide is better than soap flavored (LOL)!

moorie999: That's exactly the point I'm at! I feel like I'm nearing insanity. And I still have to clean down my Monstrous glider cage, since it reaks of markings! I knew I should have gone with a smaller cage! LOL
lindayaks: I'm just guessing about how well it works obviously, but I have read a lot of articles on the GSE and they all say that it works really well. They have all been written by nutritionists or people who work with animals. I sure hope they're right!
