Ok, I weighed my little two week, two day oop joeys and they each weigh 16g. They don't seem as robust tonight as they have been. Both parents were out of the pouch and they were cool. I cannot get them to take any supplement. I'm using the catheter. I put the end of it on top of their tongue and they won't suck. If I squirt just a tiny bit out, they won't swallow it. What am I doing wrong? I'm getting nervous that I'm going to lose these little guys!

Have they been pottied? And are they warm? If the answer to either of those questions is "No" - they won't feed. Try toileting them & making sure they are warm before feeding.

Aw, Joy, they're in my prayers. Hang in there. I've never hand fed a baby that young so I'm not much help. Lots of prayers for the baby ones, tho!

Ok, it seems like I may have panicked a little too soon. Yes, the babies were cool, what with both parents out playing! However, I've learned their weight is okay for their age, they aren't dehydrated so they probably aren't hungry. They are snuggled back up with mom and dad nursing and getting warm. I'm too paranoid I guess. Anyway I will be keeping a close eye out now that I know more about what to look for. Oh, and I will be weighing them everyday!!

From the information you have given, it does not sound like your joeys are in any danger. Its probably best not handle them so much at such an early age. As long as the mother is getting the proper diet and plenty of protein, the joeys should be getting all the nutrients they need to grow. All they need right now is mothers milk, so check the pouch/nesting box every once in a while to see if they are nursing. Joeys will not eat anything other than mothers milk until they are around six weeks old. Pulling Joeys from the mother at anytime before eight weeks is not reccomended, and can seriously [censored] a joeys immune system, injur the joey, or result in premature death. And by the way, the parents will frequently leave the joeys alone in the pouch/nesting box, it doesnt mean the joeys have been rejected.

Thanks for your response, I appreciate it! Actually I haven't handled the joeys at all except to check on them. My biggest concern was they seemed more weak and lithargic to me last night than they have been. They were oop early too, and with first time parents I know they sometimes have problems. The fact that both parents were out and the joeys were cool to the touch concerned me also. I had no intentions of pulling them though, just wanted to supplement as they didn't seem to be growing as they should.

My other single joey was so big and grew so fast, I guess it made me paranoid about these two. Raising joeys is not my area of expertise by any means! I'm getting good advice from everyone, so hopefully I can get through this! Thanks again!

Joy, I have handled all 14 of my joeys from day one oop. Alot depends on the parents. Twins are often smaller and grow a little slower then singles simply because they have to share every thing, mom's milk, dad's attention, etc...(and if you think twins are tiny, try triplets some time!)
Do you have a nest box or are they in a pouch? I noticed that with the box and some fleece blankets, the inside of the box stays a bit warmer then a pouch. The wood helps keep in some of the heat.
You are doing great and these little ones are going to be fine.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Teresa! They are in a pouch now, a large one, but one of my guardian angels named Peggy srlb Limbo Stick is sending me a nest box! I will feel so much more comfortable when they are in that. I can't put it on the floor of the cage though. Their room has 12' ceilings and it's cold down by the floor, but I can put a wide shelf underneath the nest box in case they wander out!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed and will weigh them again tonight. If their weight is down I will probably have a stroke right on the spot!

Oh, good to hear! I agree with Teresa..single joeys are larger. Peek was much bigger when he came OOP as a single joey than Hush and Teal'c were after sharing the pouch. I can't imagine triplets! Keep us updated on the wee ones!

Hey Jen! The little ones weighed the same last night as they did the night before. Should I be concerned about that? I'm trying to tell myself they don't gain weight overnight, but should they? I am a terrible worry wart when it comes to these two!

The single joey is already out and eating from the dish at 5 weeks oop. She weighs 46g. Last week she was 38g. No doubt she is doing well! Big Mama and Papa don't have a problem with letting me take her out anymore, thank goodness! She is just too sweet!

I wouldn't worry unless the remain the same for say, 3 or 4 days without an increase-but I am not an expert on this. I didn't really weigh mine until they were older, so am not certain how quickly grams go on at this age. I know that Riker was 46 grams when I first brought him home at 8 wks OOP. William was 38 grams at 5 weeks old, 124 at 5mos, and ended up at 170 at 1 yr. Peek was 99.5 grams when he was neutered at 11 wks OOP, but he was big like his dad was, and ended up at 160g. Troi was 40 something at 9 wks, and around 64 at 12. At 1 1/2 she was comfortably settled where she is now at around 135 (but never went over 93 until after her joeys were all weaned). If that helps any at all.

I did notice that the twins were smaller than the single when they came OOP, and seemed to not grow as fast, but did catch up eventually, though neither Hush or Teal'c will be as big as their dad and brother were, who were both single joeys.

Jen, here is what their weights have been so far. They were oop on 4/30. On 5/16,5/17,5/19 they were both 16g. Tonight I weighed them again and the male was 18g but the female was still at 16g. I decided to try and supplement her again and did manage to get a little bml in her. Not a whole lot though. They are three weeks oop today. Well Saturday! At 5 weeks oop, the single girl is 48g.

These joeys are just not growing much at all. They are not trying to get out of the pouch and search for food or anything. I think mom doesn't have much milk. She is the sorriest eater I have. Normally she is on the bml diet but I have been giving her Ensure to try and put some weight on her also. I think I need to start supplementing them everyday now. What do you think? Or anyone else too.

Here is a pic of the boy at 18g. He is a pepper and has bitten me twice!

Joy, I would go with your gut instinct at this point. If you feel they are truly not getting enough or progressing as they should, I would try supplementing part time (not full, as I think psychological issues are involved in the nursing process, also, and the bond with their mom). If they won't take the baby bml, perhaps wombaroo or ensure could be tried. William was orphaned at 5 weeks OOP. Though he was eating some on his own, we had to supplement still with a couple weeks of babyfoods and yogurt hand/fed-lickys, and hand feed his Ensure part time, until he was doing well on his own. Since they seem to be getting some from mom, I'd try supplementing a few times a day, and increasing that if they still are not progressing or you think they need more. That's if it was me.

I can say that they are beautiful joeys, tho!! What gorgeous little ones!! Those little faces are priceless

Mimijo, I had some joeys last year that also were slow to develope. They hadn't gained any weight by 4 weeks OOP, but were developing normally. Now, if I'm not mistaken, the mother is on the small side. You need to remember that due to thier mothers small size, these are most likely going to be smaller gliders. Also, they seem to be developing normally, they are furred, their eyes are open, their tail looks like it's starting to fluff out... At this point in time, the only lack of development seems to be in weight. If you want, you can try and suppliment them, but I don't know if you'll see any improvement. My last joeys, I supplimented and they continued to not gain weight. Even now, more or less full grown, they are still quite small... Good luck with the little ones, they are beautiful.

Thanks everyone. I was also told that if they aren't coming out of the pouch to look for food, they are probably not hungry. Yes, the mom is real small, she is hanging in there are at a whopping 68g! Their dad is on the small side too, but I can't weigh him without putting him in a container and then the subtract the container. I didn't want to do that because of the stress factor. He is very solid and muscular though, so no worries with him!

Whenever I peek in on them, it's always the male I see nursing. I'm sure the little girl is getting some or she wouldn't still be here, but obviously the male is getting more. I think at this point it's just best for me to keep a close watch on them and go with my gut feelings. I really don't want to have to supplement either one if I can help it!

I will sit down with the mom and dad and give them the same talk I gave my own kids....you brought them here, now take care of them yourself! Grandma's are for playing with!
