Hi there! This might be old hat to some, but I'm new to the GC and to glider parenthood . Here's something that just suddenly "worked" for me today. My two gliders love to sleep in this fleece hammock. They love it more than the regular nesting pouches. Wanting to indulge them, I let them sleep in it for about two or three nights. I inspected it for feces and found none and I smelled it to see if it smelled of urine and I didn't find any evidence, so I let them keep sleeping in it. I took it out of the cage a few days ago and never got around to washing it. In the meantime, I've been trying to establish the bond with my gliders for the past two weeks now. I have been bringing them into a glider proofed bathroom for what would be the equivalent of some tent time. I never have to catch them to take them in to the bathroom, nor do I have to catch them to put them back in the cage. I have been using the pouch they are sleeping in to transport to and from the bathroom. I've been reading everything I can find online and in the GC forums about bonding and what to do and what not to do. One suggestion I started two days ago was wearing the same clothes for that "tent time". I've got a long sleeve shirt with a pocket and I've been wearing that with the hopes that I could put the glider into the pocket. It has crabbed and jumped right back out. However, today I got the idea to take the hammock they'd been sleeping in (it does smell like gliders) and stuff that into the shirt pocket. Tonight my little guy sat on my hand (he didn't run up my sleeve or try to get away). At first, I thought we were going to have a bad time because he usually never crabs at me once I get him into the bathroom and he's only bitten me when I had to give him a bath due to diarrhea. Today he crabbed and lunged at me twice. Unprecidented for this little guy! I thought, "Oh no, I'm losing ground with him." But, once he saw I had Yoplait, he licked it off my fingers and I actually got him to sit on my hand while eating. He didn't try to jump to the floor or the counter. He was content to sit straddling my finger. When he was done with the yogurt, he started up my sleeve, but made a bee line for the pocket and, once he smelled that hammock in there, he shoved his way in. It's kind of a tight fit, but he's nestled in my shirt pocket and for the first time, I'm up and about the house with the glider in my pocket. I was reading to my son (don't tell the glider, but he thinks it was to him ), I ate supper, I read some in a book, and now I'm typing on this - the most awesome site on the web - with my buddy in my pocket. I think this is a step to real bonding. Woah! I guess he is asleep because I feel a crazy vibration in a regular rhythmic motion coming from my pocket. He must be "purring" like I've heard they can do. Ok, he must've sensed that I typed that because he just stopped. He hasn't crabbed or even tried to get out of the pocket. He would have no trouble climbing out, either. I did give him a yogurt drop once he crawled in my pocket. I take it back, he did crab then. When my big ole moon pie head came into view, he crabbed but then reluctantly shut his yap when he got a whiff of the treat. I don't know if he ate it all, but I want him to feel comfy and safe in my pocket. I'm just thrilled right now!! I know it will take more time and patience to get the other, older, more skittish glider to this level, but it's nice to know that it can happen.

Jimbo...that is so cool! I will have to try that with Harley. Last night I was too tired to do tent time so instead we brought her into our bedroom and blocked the space under the door and let her loose while we were sleeping. She kept jumping from the top of the curtains down to our bed...climbing back to the top of the dresser and then gliding down next to our heads on our pillows. He he it was definately an experience...got some sleep considering she would wake me up from time to time climbing up my arm, leg, or hip...was really funny ...then when she realized I was awake and watching her she would then retreat back to the top of the curtains. Hopefully we won't be so tired tonight and can have some tent time!

That's great!I'm so happy for you! I've found keeping a blankie with my scent and hers in my pocket or the pouch deffinately help. I've only had Maggie since the end of March but I'm able to take her anywhere with me during the day now.
At night it's a different story. If I leave the comp. room she'll wander.
I tried letting her loose in the hotel room at night while we were away this weekend but that was a nightmare! She won't be going away with us anymore. She kept us up all night! I tried putting her in her cage in the bathroom but she started barking! I guess I'll have to find a sitter next time!

I have some smaller ones and bigger ones. The bigger ones are 8"x8" The smaller are about 4x4. Most of them I just made by cutting up my kids outgrown fleece PJs. Then I where them under my shirt for a couple of days.

I actually stumbled on this little trick by accident. Hey, every now and then even a blind hog will find an acorn!
I had stuffed the glider's pouch/hammock into my pocket after getting him out once we were in the bathroom. I noticed he started to lean off my hand to sniff at it and the little guy just did the rest.

I tried it again yesterday to see if it was just a fluke, but it worked perfectly. He took a few licky treats of yogurt off my finger and then went right for the pocket with the pouch stuffed in it. I then went about my business of spot cleaning the cage, preparing supper for both the gliders and my family, etc. I forgot the little guy was even in my pocket until we all went to get in the car to go somewhere and he started to crab. I exclaimed "Oh my gosh! I've still got my little buddy in my pocket!" My 7 year old son thought that was quite funny. It would have been a hoot if I'd made it all the way to church and then realized he was in my pocket. I can just see it now, the preacher would have been preaching and then suddenly from the congregation the sound of a VERY crabby glider Now THAT should be in a movie!

Wow jimbo - how big are your shirt pockets? You can fit a pouch or a hammack inside your pocket? I need to get me some of those

Apryl,
I've got a button-down Tommy shirt that has what I would call a normal sized pocket. I could take a pen and clip it in the pocket, so I guess it would be about as deep as the pocket on an Oxford type dress shirt. It has a flap that buttons down over it, so that may make it just a tad deeper. However, the cotton has some give to it and I can stuff the gliders' hammock in my pocket. That pretty much takes up 3/4 of the pocket space, the little guy that climbs in takes up the rest. It is a snuggly fit for him, but he likes it and he really doesn't crab until I go to get him out. In order to get him out, I've had to actually take off the shirt and then kinda shove him up out of the pocket gently. He is most definitely crabbing at that point! My approach will be to get him used to the shirt pocket and hammock and then once he gets in, I'll just remove the hammock. Then at that point, I may work on trying to get both gliders in the same pocket. However, during my bathroom playtime (which is really before they ever normally get up), my other glider will run onto my back and then pretty much just hide there. She clings to me but doesn't want to be anywhere around on my chest or where she and I can make eye contact. I usually just read in a book with her sitting on my back pooping. Nice, huh! She usually heads for Backville once I'm done giving whatever treat I have to give. To get her back to the cage, I just have to get the pouch close enough to her and hold it dead still for about one solid hour . She eventually crawls back to the pouch and then I take her back to the cage. I keep her out about an hour, but the little guy is getting pocket carte blanche right now !
I just felt compelled to post to this so people didn't think I was like walking around with huge clown pockets on my shirt You know, like some Forrest Gump kinda guy just bumbling along saying "Momma always said 'Life is like a bunch of pockets'"
