[:"green"]Hi Everyone, Tomorrow, Ranger will have a portion of his tail amputated. I waited a week for valium therapy. Now, there is no choice but surgery. He will come home tomorrow in an e-collar. Any sugestions on what I should expect or care tips greatly appreciated. Regards, R & R [/]
[:"green"]I'll be praying for Ranger as he goes through his surgery & healing process. Thanks for the continuous updates... You're a wonderful guardian!!! Keep the faith.
[:"green"]RANGER IS HOME !!!! Surgery went well. They kept him until able to devise a cover he could not defeat. He does not have an ecollar and hopefully will not need one. When he first awoke, he removed his bandages and tore out a stitch !!!! That's when a very serious method for covering the wound was devised. He was repaired using glue..took off the bandage again and had to be restitched!!! .. A group of vets & assistants were able to cover the wound with film & duct tape. They would not release him until a working method was found. Now, it seems he has lost interest. The covering is interesting. The wound can breathe. Bottom line, if he manages to defeat this one, they (vets) will be available to me all weekend. All are committed....They fell in love with him... When home, he took a long drink (think I will too) and ate well..So far, he's staying away from his tail. Will see the vet again on Wednesday to change dressing. Looks very promising........R & R [/]
It's so wonderful to hear that Ranger has such a devoted team ready & waiting for him! Please keep us posted & sneak him an extra yogie from me!
Good news! You guys hang in there. Hopefully he'll be back to his old self soon! We're really pulling for you and Ranger-you're doing a great job, Roger! Tell him I don't want to have to come out there and glare at him for taking his bandages off, then give the little trooper a treat!
Any way you can get a pic of exactly how they did his tail? It could prove useful for others some time (some vets aren't as dedicated and inventive as yours seem to be).

[:"green"]Hi Jen !!! Thanks for all the moral support...I enclosed a pic but have no idea what's underneath; but I will on Wednesday when it's changed. Yes, the vet is a young woman as are the assistants, Very dedicated...She consults with specialists here at Tufts. If this covering works, I will have the directions posted for others. All I know is that 35mm film is used and also some sort of vent along with the obvious duct tape. She has a CD I made of the ecollar instructions you sent me as a last resort. Hopefully it will not come to that. So far (6 hrs) no crabbing or tail sucking. He is alert now...I think he has given up. She did not remove any more tail than necessary. Will keep you posted...... R & R [/]
Ahhh..my mistake. Took another look-at first it looked like his tail was mostly on the other side (blame it on tired old eyes in desperate need of new glasses ) but I see it now. Do you mind if I keep a copy of your photo in my SM folder for future reference? I'd also be willing to send you a finished ecollar for your vet so they have a better reference-no charge-if you'd like, just in case. Let me know. Your Ranger really is a little trooper!

[:"green"]Roger, I'm so glad Ranger is home, active & well. At first, when I looked at the picture I thought they had taken off the majority of his tail but then I looked again and realized that what I thought was your watch is his bandage Thanks for the updates & continue to keep us posted please. My prayers are still with you both...
[:"green"]Thank You, Suz....Ranger & I appreciate prayers.....more & more each day. Best to you, R & R [/]
[:"green"] 11:20 pm All AOK... no tail sucking or crabbing....Time for meds & dinner...This is the most peace we have had.. He is alert, dressing intact...First night of real rest for me since this began. He is not in pain or suffering. Has shown no further interest in tail...No crabbing!!!!! Now I feel guilty....perhaps this dressing would have prevented the amputation...Or...does he appreciate home more now????? Still watching, Just R...Other R is dozing peacefully. YEA!!!!!!!!!!! I think we definately need more info about that tail "bandage". It sounds like something that could help lots of gliders in the future (though it would be wonderful if the information is never needed!).
I have been following along and I am so happy to hear Ranger is doing better. I'll be keeping you both in my thoughts.

[:"green"] Hi all....I changed Ranger's tail covering today. It started to come off so I had to decide to take a trip to the vet @11:15 EST or see what I could do. I remembered the "straw method" Leyna had mentioned and took action. The key to adhesion is the shaved tail. He is still quiet and quite himself. I want to make sure it remains covered until healed completely. If he continues after his tail when healed , I will have the vet shave it so a cover remains intact. We will then switch him from Valium to Prozac. Jen is sending me an ecollar in case of emergency. I don't think Ranger will go beyond his tail tip but must be prepared. I don't (and cannot) get to far ahead of myself at this point but will remain committed to keeping the tail covered even if he has to be shaved weekly. Please know that he is his old self and doing great. If we can get past the itching of the healing process without him sucking again we'll be ahead of the game. So far, so good. ...and we have a plan He's not a beaver any more....he's a bee!!!! The goal is to keep him disinterested in the tail until completely healed. [/]

[:"green"]Hi to everyone, Ranger & I just got back from the vet. She said his tail looks EXCELLENT!!!! 75% healed !!! We've decided to take him off all meds and use silver nitrate as a topical. There is no sign of skin irritation. His tail will remain covered until completely healed. The trick then is to keep him away from it. [/]
Great news, Roger!
This is off topic, but I think this is the first, non sticky post I've seen, in any forum, with over 1,000 views!!
