in most of the research i did before i got my suggies i read that one of their main foods in the wild is acacia gum, but also read that not alot of people fed this because it was fairly hard to find... well i was browsing the internet the other day and i came across some and figured i'd give everybody a heads up on where to get it if anyone is looking for any. also i would like to know if this is a good treat or supplement or what? is it supposed to be fed daily or weekly or just every so often? what are the dietary values... is it good for suggies or is it just what they had access to in the wild?

here's the link Acacia Gum its near the bottom of the page

That's actually pretty pricey for Acacia gum (more than double what I pay) - but I've never seen that site! Thanks! I feed mine scrambled in eggs along with their bee pollen and hemp hearts, and I do feed it every day.

Is the acacia just a treat or is there something in it that they need?

Where do I find acacia gum? I don't have a credit card so I cannot buy it online. Is it ok to buy an acacia tree?dunnoI could plant it in a big planter and keep it in the house for Harley...then not only does she have the fresh acacia sap/gum but something to climb on as well.

I posted back around Christmas about all the wonderful properties of hemp hearts - they are a truly awesome product that I feel everyone should use! My husband has FM & they have been so helpful! Do a search here or on the web, there's simply too much info to post!

The Acacia Gum - a nice man and fellow suggie enthusiast put me on to this site - www.helpforibs.com - this specific gum is native to Africa and is not manufactured for specific use with suggies; however, there is no harm in it's use. Please research any diet you choose!

Bee Pollen - As of right now, my source is www.vitaminlife.com - however, another GC member showed me www.stakich.com & I was impressed with their Australian pollen, unfortunately not their shipping costs! Ugh!

I am growing several of my own plants, unfortunately none of them are large enough to use yet. My garden consists of: Eucalyptus Bridgesiana, Corymbia Citridora, Galla Apple, Melaleuca Alternifolia. Soon I hope to add Acacia Mearnsii (Black Wattle)

Ok, i'm gettin myself confused.
I looked on the ibs site at the acacia fiber stuff..
so.. acacia is a liquid or solid (i always thought it was like a sap ...)

Acacia is a plant - in the wild, gliders cut a characteristic "V" in the bark (much like they do to collect sap for syrup) and they wait for the sap to collect in the "V" - the powder is just a way it can be packaged and sold. It can be mixed with water like Glideraide or sprinkled on their fruit, some people put it in their staple. I just prefer to put it in their eggies because of all their foods, that the one thing I can count on my guys to eat every night (it's their fave).

LOL - I call it a garden - it's really a corner of my laundry room with a shop light! I didn't want the plants outdoors because I wanted to lessen the chance of bugs and disease + Utah isn't much like Oz if ya know what I mean - so I'm making an attempt to grow them indoors. And, Yes, They are all for my gliders! What can I say, I wuv them!

Most of that stuff you're looking at on that website is for industrial type use and has applications as emulsifiers and thickening agents in both food and chemicals.

They sell stuff for food use, but they don't do anything but large scale wholesale so you probably won't be able to purchase from them unless you want a huge amount.

For the most part, when feeding acacia gum make sure you check your sources very carefully. Use only FOOD GRADE pure acacia gum. The stuff from exotic nutrition is from the species that Australian gliders eat, so you can be pretty sure it's safe. Keep in mind, most gliders are not going to eat it plain. You'll probably have to mix it into their food, or sprinkle it on fruit or mix it with fruit juice.

I was given some gum - but haven't a clue how to use it - duhhhh!!! I tried mixing it with water and it went like glue, so I added more water and the gluey stuff stayed stuck to the bottom and the water stayed on top!! How do you mix it????

I ordered some Black Wattle (Acacia Mearnsii) plants yesterday, there's only 2 places in the UK that I could find!!!

I use the stuff from the eating for IBS site for me! helpforibs.com its a solid powder that dissolves completely and unnoticably in enough liquid, or blends into semi solid things- like puddings and applesauce... and when used with less liquid does form a paste or sappy type consistancy.

I've been following this thread and wondering about the stuff from Exotic Nutrition. Nobody had mentioned that until Big Ernie! I've bought some bee pollen from them and I also looked on their website and found acacia gum. Are their products more expensive? Is that why nobody had really mentioned them (monster???)? I was just wondering if there was something about them that might be inferior to other products? Thanks

BTW - I sprinkle a small amt. of the bee pollen on their BML at night and they seem to love it!

If you want to know why I didn't recommend Exotic Nutrition - PM me!

As far as the Hemp Hearts - I actually don't remember the exact calcium phosphorus ratio - you'll have to give me a lil time if you want that info. It was almost exact to boiled chicken breast. Not that great of a ratio, but not bad either when you consider all the other benefits of the hearts, which if you've done a search on them, you're prolly on board with me by now! LOL

I have mine shipped to me from Canada from a company called Rocky Mountain Grain Products
Box 550
Lethbridge, AB
Canada T1J 3Z4
24hr PH: 403-329-1380
FAX: 403-756-3997
email: []snowrk@telusplanet.net[/]

You can also order them from a different company online here - http://www.dragonflyherbals.com/

Just make sure that where ever you end up getting them, you get the HEARTS - because I almost made the mistake of buying 10lbs of SHELLED seeds once! LOL - so NOT the same thing!

I am looking for both the plant yes, and also, wondering how it is fed to the gliders? Does it come in a powdered form or a vitamin? Thanks! :>)
