[:"brown"] WARNING!!! The following details are very graphic. Those who are very sensitive should stop reading now. [/]

This is extremely hard for me to type through my tears. I just got a phone call from a girl who bought a joey from me last week. She bought a male joey to go with a female glider that she had. She also has an older breeding pair in another cage. Apparently, the male joey that she got from me had escaped his cage and found his way to the top of her breeding pairs cage. When she went in to feed the gliders tonight, she found the joeys head sticking out of the top of the cage, but the rest of his body was down inside that pairs cage. The male glider had chewed up the joeys tail and part of his anus. She said that she pulled him through the bars, but his intestines were hanging out and he had no tail left. She said that she knew that he would not make it, so she smothered him so he would not suffer. I am so overwhelmed with a HUGE range of emotions. I love every one of the gliders that ever leave here. Just knowing what has happened to one of my babies out of my care is enough to get me out of breeding for good. It kills me that I was not able to protect him, but her prdicament could have happened to me and I don't know how I would ever handle that kind of situation. I know that adult males will fight, even to death, but would a glider really be that vengeful to actually pull a glider into his cage to kill it?!? That is so hard for me to believe that our precious babies could be cold blooded killers. I'm sorry to dump this all on you, I am just heartbroken, grief stricken and shaking and had to share with people who could identify with my horror.

OMG I'm SO sorry to hear that . It's sickening what some males will do to eachother. Condolences to you and the poor girl that found that.

I am so sorry I really don't know what to say. I can't imagine the joey wouldn't be strong enough to escape and get away? That is so horrible, hopefully he wasn't in too much pain for too long.

Also hunny I don't think that our babies are cold blooded killers. Males of any species will fight to the death, it's just the nature of intact males. It's hormones, and not anyone's fault really.

My heart feels for you but there is nothing you could have done… don’t beat your self up over it …. Some males are just overly protective / aggressive… and as with any “soul” you never know what will effect it…

** I type “soul” because gliders (and animals in my opinion) deserver more recognition that the label of animal

I understand completely. That's one of the things I'm afraid of when one of the monkiees crawls on any of the other cages. I probably freak out the babies more by my rushing to get them Off.

Nothing either of you could have done. Don't feel guilty.

I am so sorry words can not express. How very sad for all involved. Prayers to you and to she who found him. And also for the little joey. Such a short life and tragic ending for him.

Thats heartbreaking! I'm actually crying now... Its so sad... But it is just nature and im sure the owner couldve put the cages in separate rooms to prevent it but how could she have known it was necessary to take that action? it seems unprobable that the joey wouldnt be able to get away but certainly possible. Thats one of my fears. That when I get Jenks he would get out and wonder into the ferret cage. However, i plan to keep them in separate rooms.

Im sooo sorry for your loss and the new owners loss too. It mustve been especially tough for her to put the poor baby out of his suffering.

That's just awful. I was watching my breeding pair with one male joey, trying some turnip greens. Dad came up from under the food dish, pulled the leaf out of the joey's hand, "bam", the joey got his head banged on the floor. Dad didn't mean to do it though, he just wanted what the other had.
Thoughts go out to you and the other mommy.

I had something very similar happen last fall... An adult male of mine got loose and attacked and killed a 5 week OOP joey, a 1 year old female, and a 6 year old female with joeys IP. The pair that had the 5 week old joey fought back though and the male was killed as well. I was at work while all of this was happening. When I got home, I walked into a room that was just covered in blood. It was the most horrible thing ever... I have since gotten new cages that prevent gliders from having contact with eachother, even if there's another glider crawling right on top of thier cage. Also, these cages doors don't close unless you lock them, so I always have to lock the cage doors...

I'm sorry about your loss. I know how it feels to loose a joey you raised... Even if the glider isn't with you, it still carries a piece of your heart

[:"green"]Lord have mercy! What a horrible experience for both of you. I'm so sorry... It is unfortunate that the males are that protective of their territory, but it is perfectly natural. I will definitely be even more careful with my own gliders now after having read of this tragedy... My prayers & thoughts are with you both...

Thank you all for your prayers and concerns. I couldn't really sleep last night, I just kept envisioning the senerio. How terrible!

Leyna, that must have been so horrifying for you. I am so sorry that you had to endure that. I would be very interested to learn more about the cages that you have. They sound wonderful!

Thank's again for all your support! I truly appreciate it and will pass it all on to her also.

These are my cage: http://lllreptile.com/store/catalog/rept...d-vision-cages/

I have smaller ones, they are only 16x16x30, but I actually like that size, it works well for me and my gliders...

OMG I'm so sorry to hear this. I feel for everyone involved. I'm kinda scared now. I'm bringing home my two new babies this Sunday. They are a pair......3 year old male and a 3-legged 2 year old female.....Bo & Daisy. They are rescues. I currently am owned by Piglet which is my heart and he's only 11-12 weeks oop. Piglet and Bo both are neutered and I'm not putting them in the same cage. Bo & Daisy have their own cage. I was gonna take it slow in introducing them to each other but now I'm wondering if I should even attempt it at all. I don't know what I'd do if I lost my little "piggie". He goes to work with me everyday and I just couldn't imagine not having him. Don't get me wrong........this story breaks my heart and has me thinking in different directions but Bo & Daisy deserve a good home and I know mine is perfect for them so Im getting them reguardless. But, what should I do........leave them in separate rooms for a week or so? Quarantine them so to speak? I heard that when a glider gets stressed from going from the only home they know to a new one that it can cause umm how do I say this......I guess they carry parasites and cause I guess bad poopie which can spread from one glider to another and cause major problems even death. Please correct me if I'm wrong........I don't wanna sound like a goof. I'm just wanting to do whats best for not only Piglet but Bo & Daisy as well. I don't want the same future for the little baby mentioned above. Any help you guys can give would be soooooooo appreciated.

I know this is off topic so if this post needs to be moved to another then it's ok. I just saw this and all the questions started forming.

Angela

Thanks for responding Leyna. They have been checked by a vet....a fecal smear and everything. I still plan on quarantining them for no less than 2 weeks though. I'm getting them from a really nice usda breeder that took them in b/c her heart went out to them. I know they are being taken care of. I just saw this post and like any mother.....started to freak out a little. Atleast I do know they have been vet checked and I will just take extra measures for a couple of weeks to insure everyone's safety. I feel like a new mother waiting to give birth................geesh. LOL

Thanks,
Angela

I am sorry you lost your little one. It is not just males that can do this tho. My Honey (6 Months OOP) tried to pull Misu (3 yrs) thru the cage and almost broke her tail. It is just them trying to protect their space. Harsh world out there.

I am so very sorry to hear about your loss, but yes, it is very natural. I would not put it past my Babbax one bit if another glider came around he would do anything and everything to kill it. He is just a very very dominant alpha male, but yet totally loveable.

With my new enclosures made of the pet screen they are not able to get to one another neither. This has been a HUGE help and I dont panic if one goes to another cage anymore like I worried about before. I believe reptariums are the same, they can not get to one another.

Please know that my heart goes out to you and the new owner who had to go through it.
