I've been promising to do this for a few weeks now. Last time Lyah had the gelpack put in between her front lower incisors I thought I'd be good to take pics of how it's done, since it's a relatively new thing with gliders.

Now, this stuff is put in the abscess between the front teeth and hardens. As it dissolves, constant, 24 hour antibiotic is released directly into the surrounding tissue, and also as the gelpack slowly dissolves, the abscess closes around it to help get rid of it, and re solidify those teeth in the jaw. This was Lyah's third gelpack (and so far, so good! Her face hasn't swollen up again!)...for those that don't know, Lyah has only 9 teeth remaining...the rest were so infected they had to come out. The problem with these lower incisors is that they hook into the jaw and to remove them until they're almost falling out risks damage to her jaw. We couldn't take them out to eliminate the infection, they weren't loose enough, So we had to try and find a way to heal the infection from the inside out...this would not have worked with her other teeth, and the oral meds weren't helping this one.

And be warned that Lyah IS a big girl, lol.

So here's the series of pics Dr. Harris was generous enough to let me take so I could show you all how the gelpack works.

Note also that this is a blunt ended needle...you need it to get down in between the small space of the teeth, but it doesn't puncture anything or go into tissue.

Next 4...putting the pack in through waking up...

And my apologies...I wasn't at the best angle for the pics.

We also cleaned her pouch...it was dirty but not infected. vet thinks her weight keep her from doing a thorough job on it, so we help her keep it clean now.

She was also at 183 grams here...her last weight a couple weeks ago was 156. smile

Very interesting! I wondered how they kept gliders under while they worked on their mouths. What a great idea to give antibiotics right to the site of the infection. Will Lyah have to keep having gel packs put in until the pocket closes up? What antibiotic is in the gel pack? I wonder if she gained a little because it no longer hurts her to eat.

Here's the info on the gelpacks (if I can find it, lol, I wrote it down):
AH..here it is..had to find my notes...

Doxirobe Gel
that contains Doxicycline 8.5%

This was her third pack to attempt to get it to close...we think it has, but if it does open again, then yes, we'll continue with the gelpacks to treat. I think, if there were an open recurring abscess elswhere in the mouth that wouldn't close this could be used, or between other teeth, but most often the teeth will be lost (and the infection drain) before you can get to that point with the others, or to reveal the abscess-it's just how glider teeth are structured. She was on the oral meds for months with NO effect on this abscess in front...but the gelpacks have really done amazing things in there.

And she's actually lost some weight...we think some of her incredible appetite is stress related...chewing to try and make it feel better. When it'd get too bad tho she'd stop eating...it's really been a roller coaster with her.

Dr. Harris just loves her tho...says she's beautiful even at her weight...just, well, Fluffy! lol. And Lyah does have an absolutely gorgeous face, when it's not swollen.

Was going to edit the last post but there's more Q's, lol.

First, Clotho also had one of these when she drove some food between her lower incisors and it abscessed and her chin swelled. With her, it only took one (we were right on top of it by then after dealing with Lyah), and she's doing great!

Provided no problems, I take her in every 30 to 60 days to have them all checked (well, in her case all 9) and they'll be cleaned if needed. They just got done 2 weeks ago, and a follow up on that last pack-looking good! She had a tiny bit of food in between, we took that out, and cleaned them off with glider mouthwash. She lost 31 teeth, and was on oral antibiotics from Feb. of this year until Mid August, after which has been gelpacks only and no oral meds.

The gelpack puts pressure in there. She wakes up normal for having had anesthesia, groggy and biting, lol, but only for a few minutes. But she also swats at her face for about an hour until she gets used to the added pressure in her jaw, then on and off for the first day. She gets metacam the first 24 hours to help with that. With the first gelpack, Metacam first 24 hours, Torb after 24 to 72 hours out until the discomfort went down (that one was much larger than subsequent ones as the abscess got smaller). The first day to 36 hours after you can watch her shift her food around to avoid those teeth also, after that she seems fine.

What wonderful photos! Thanks so much for sharing your experience. I'm sorry Lyah and you had to go through that and that all is progressing as it should.

Since a member is in need of this info, and the pics in the old thread don't work since the server change, here's the set again, plus one showing her face at one of it's worst times.

There will be 10 pictures total, 2 posts, starting with her worst facial swelling, 8 as the gelpack is put in, and then as the swelling went down.

Lyah had badly infected teeth...at her death (of pneumonia) she had only 9 remaining. The lower incisors are hooked into the jaw in such a way they cannot be pulled without damaging the jaw until they're about ready to fall out. Plus they rely on those front teeth quite a bit. Hers abscessed in between the lower incisors. The gelpack delivered 24 hour antibiotic straight to the source of the infection, and helped close the wound as it dissolved.

Here's the original of this thread, her threads are in various places in this forum detailing her months long battle with her teeth, Feb - Dec of 2007. A member is having a similar problem, and asked for these since the pics in the old thread no longer work.

In my situation, the gel pack saved my baby. His jaw was so infected that the bones had seperated and his jaw was wiggling on both sides. Thanks Jen for posting these again. smile
