I received both of my sugar gliders about 2 weeks ago. One is a male that is about a year old. The other is a female only a few months old. For starters, i notice they DO NOT like to be woken up during the day. The female FLIPS out and bites and makes that wierd noise. The male is pretty timid and calm and just goes with the flow.
He comes out and hangs out with my roomate, lets my roomate pet it, and sits on my roomate no problem. But anytime I go to the cage the female just goes crazy and starts running around super fast in cirlces along the top and sides of the cage like she is on crack. The male will usually go into the little hanging house i got for them and just peek his head out. He will let me pet him and stick my hand in to pet him but he won't come out to well, the female is just EXTREMELY hyper, and she gets mad if she is in the hanging house and I try to stick my hand in there....
Is it a bad sign when she starts running around in circles on the top of the cage upside down and going crazy anytime I get down to the cage? she does it even when I get NEAR the cage. And anytime I stick my hand in the cage, she no longer makes that noise at me but she will NOT let me touch her, and I refuse to chase her around the cage since I heard it's bad to do...
Basically is this just because she is still young so she is hyper and acts this way? will she eventaully calm down? as of now she won't even let me get close to her to even bond with her, even when I feed her she takes the food from my hand and takes off, and when she does sniff me she usually ends up finding me to tastey and bites me (not out of meaness though)...
Also, there cage is by a window, i live in an apartment so i am limited on where i can put them that is dark. There Hangy bed they have is like mesh hols in teh top so you can see down into it and see them sleep. So during the day when I wake up i play with them feed them watermelon at about 5am. Then before i leave for work around 6 i put a red light sheet over the cage. That way the light from teh window won't bother then since I heard they like that dark and the ligth is bad for there eyes. Is this even necessary? or is it bad and ocnfuses them on the time of day sinc eit's always dark? or is it perfectly fine? my email is []rick.cowman@investmet.com[/] at work and []hedsic@yahoo.com[/] is my personal email if anyone can help at all, and SORRY FOR WRITING A BOOK here

HedsIc, first of all welcome to GC! So sorry it took so long for you to receive an answer to your post. We have over 9000 registered members and sometimes it just takes a bit of time for a post to get an answer, but we do try our hardest here to make sure everyone gets a response.

Now, let me try to help you out here.

That wierd noise is what we refer to as crabbing. Most gliders do not like to be woken out of a sound sleep, especially to be taken out of their nice comfy pouch and into a bright room. Although light will not make them go blind, they do have very sensitive eyes when it comes to daytime. As they are nocturnal.

Quote:

This to me sounds as though your lil girl is still very scared and nervous. May I suggest reading up on the bonding techniques and maybe slowing down with her a bit until she starts to feel you not as a threat. After all, in her eyes you are like a giant and if you were in her shoes and had someone 100 times larger than you, you would probably scream and run in circles too!

If you dont mind me asking, what size cage do you have them in and what diet are they on?

I think your little girl just needs a bit more time to become used to you and your presence. You may consider getting a tent to do bonding time in at night.

As for the cage being near a window, as long as they are not directly in the sun, then no it is not bad for them. I would suggest if the sun comes in and directly hits them, than yes to the sheet.

I hope this has helped you out some, and please know that we really do try to answer as soon as we can.

Okies. This forum is definately the right place to be. It sometimes just takes time for you to get the answer you need. It would also help you alot too if you went into the bonding and relations section and read some posts there. You are definately not the only one with gliders that are shy. I have a male that is about 11 weeks OOP and I've had him 3 weeks and he still crabs and bites me just about at every opportunity. It takes patience alot of time and love. Are they bonded? It sounds like they are. If you can't get them into a bonding pouch what I do is take out their pouch they sleep in and put it under your shirt from the time you get home from work until they start to wake up in the evening. It's ok if they crab, they will calm down and go to sleep eventually. Also, sleep with a Tshirt for a few nights and then lay it over their cage, this will help with their adjusting to your scent. Another easy thing to do is just sit by their cage when they are awake and either read aloud of talk to them but DO NOT LOOK AT THEM! They'll get used to your prescense and your voice but not feel as threatened as when you are looking right at them. My lil boy (Keyo) hates to be stared at! LOL He is just now after hours and hours and hours of bonding pouch time and talking allowing me to look at him. You can also sleep with a blankie (just a simple strip of fleece) and make sure to rub it on your face and hands and put it in the pouch with them whenever they are not on you. Also, do you have any other pets? do you smoke? work with somethin that is smelly??? Some gliders hate the smell of these things and it confuses them when you smell different and it takes time for them to adjust to them. Try and always use the same soap if possible so you always smell the same. Gliders recognize people alot by their scent rather than their apprearance. And again bribery is always good! LOL Feed them some mealies, yogurt and apple sauce from your fingers. I only feed my gliders their mealies by hand. They learn to associate your hands with a positive. Do you have a tent? I mean a lil pop tent. These are amazing for bonding. It makes it so your gliders have to interact with you. Go in the tent with them, and just read a book, ignore them. Have some toys in there and their curiosity will eventually take over and they'll be climbing on you. Your male sounds ready for this but your female may need some time to get used to you before you try tent time with her. The best time for tent time is when they will allow you to pet them and give them treats. Another thing is if you can move their cage. They may catch a draft and these guys being from a warm climate need the heat in their environment... I think some other folks will be along shortly but there is lots here to get you started. But It takes ALOT of patience, time and love. Some gliders just take longer than others to bond. It'll be very much worth it when they come to you because they love you! Good Luck and Welcome to GC!

Sorry if I sounded rushy there, i was just worried something might be wrong with Aireal's Hyperness. i know she doesn't seem, really SHY, at all. They both kinda shake, bu ti think it might be how they breath makes them look as though they are shaking. But like it seems almost as if she's like "haha come catch me of you can punk" because i have had her crawl on me and in my shirt and stuff and she will let me touch her SOMETIMES then she runs off.
once i had no shirt on and i opend the huge door on the cage and she lunged out and latched herself onto my chest. didn't hurt, but my roomates found it really funny, and I think she bites me because I noticed i use a fruit smelling body soap. smells like melons. so she must think i am a huge melon..
The cage i can't remember what size but it was like 28 inches long and 32 inches high, it's a big bird cage. I would still like comethin bigger though. When i move from my apartment into the townhome I am thinking of taking a spare room and just lineing the whole room in chicken wire and making the whole room a giant cage for them to play in and have that be there room.
I don't work around anything smelly or smoke, and no other pets. I will defiently try the pop tent idea, any good brands to get? Also what would you say is the best bedding for them? or would just putting a little small towel down work as bedding? right now I use Alphalpha you'd feed rabbits, but i hate the smell of that stuff. like a gross hay smell. they hardly ever even get on the bottom of the cage at all, they are either on the cage itself or the top of there hanging house thing or on the vines and stuff i got them. i got to say they are probably the best pets i have ever owned so far.

Okies:) I would say go to walmart and buy a pop tent. They are like 15$ Cheap and useful, gotta love it. They don't require bedding on the bottom of their cage and it can be yukky for them as they may try and eat stuff that falls down when they are eating, if there is something on the bottom of their cage it will catch their poo and urine and if they try and eat anything on that well, yuck! Towels and face cloths are not good either, just cause they lil loops can catch lil nails and seriously harm toes and fingers. With your lil girl being so worried about you, it would be hard to get her un-stuck should she get caught up in it without hurting her and your bonding process. They love fleece though, and it is suggie safe, so if you wanted you could buy some fleece, cut some squares out for them and put those in the cage as well. They like to snuggle it, attack it and carry it around, (again rub it on you and it will help the bonding...) The shaking, well they all do it. Good Luck with it, if you have any other questions always post here, there is a wealth of knowledge and there is almost ALWAYS someone who has an answer for you! Have Fun! they are amazing critters. Ive only had Pocket and Keyo for 9 and 3 weeks respectively but Ill never ever be without gliders again!

Ps May I ask what type of diet you have them on?

Hmmm...not too sure about the diet, but it's hard to know what you are feeding without the product names and such. However it does sound as though you are missing some very important parts of a glider's diet, namely, calcium. In addition to the bonding links, I would also check out the diet links on this site. I think it's best to pick one of those and stick with it.

Congrats on your new gliders and welcome to GC!

You might also try getting a bonding pouch for your little ones to wear during their sleeping hours; WAIT until she is a less scared, though. For now, the tee shirt that smells like you over the cage is good...remember to replace it. Also, "licky" treats to make friends with her. Sit by the cage and offer her some applesauce on the end of your finger...don't let her lick it all the way off though, because since she's a joey, she may nip your finger. Just keep dipping your finger into the applesauce. This gets her to smell you and associate you with something good. After you do all these things and can pick her up, she will probably still be nervous. You might just try holding her while she's in her pouch, that way she has a familiar, safe place around her, while she's with her "giant." Continue to bribe her with licky treats. There is nothing like a little positive reinforcement. LOL! Eventually, she'll crawl out of her pouch to see you, but it will take time. Sometimes it takes a year for them to be completely bonded to you. Good luck and pm me anytime if you have a question. I couldn't get on GC yesterday due to server problems. But, there are so many forums, it's hard for people to respond to all, because their are also so many users constantly posting, that even posts made within a few hours get buried pages down. What I do is bump my post up...just reply to my own post and write "bumping question."

Best,
Jennifer

Okie dokie, Ima say check out the diet links too. There are some great choices out there that are affordabe and will provide your babies with all the yummies they love as well as the vitamins, nutrients and stuffs they need too! I have never had my guys on a pelleted food so I can't say either way if it's a good diet for them, but my philosophy is feed what you are sure will give them everything they need Ferret food being for ferrets may not have the proper ratios a glider requires. Again I am not sure saying it's bad or its good but it sure wouldn't hurt to read up on the nutritional requirements for them! sounds like carrots are fave in your home but my guys won't even look twice at it. They love papaya, snow peas, peach, pineapple, grapes, regular peas, and sweet potatoes. I have my guys on Darcy's diet, but many people feed BML etc... You can read about these and figure out what is best for your guys in the diet links. Again always ask th questions that pop into your head, the only dumb questions are the ones that go unasked!

yeah, they don't touch the ferret stuff AT ALL, actaully Aireal climbed the sid of the cage and craawled into the dish i had hanging from teh side of the cage and she took a big poop in it, but i know the Pellet stuff wich is a mixture of honey and dried meal worms and some other stuff sais it is 50% of what they need a day for thre diet, but i can't say if they like it since i've never seen them eat it personally. i've only seen them eat what I give them from my hand, and drink their water.
Is canned fruit good at all or is that a big no no and it should just be fresh fruit? Me and my roomate were both contimplating that one yesterday, the female is myine and the male is his we baught them together from the same family...also so I will do just fine with leaving the plastic bottom on teh cage and i don't hafto put like bedding down there at all? i hate that hay smell the alphalpha stuff gives off.

Ok, I am sorry I thought you had a barred cage. If all you have is the plastic I would put some fleece down for them, but be sure change it pretty much nightly so they don't ingest their waste and it doesn't get smelly. Yuck.... Newspaper is bad, they will prolly shred it and the ink isn't good for them to ingest for sure. Canned fruits and veggies aren't that great they have alot of sugar and preservatives in them. I buy a big bag of frozen stuff ( I bought a massive bag like 8 lbs of frozen fruit for like 10$) and also some mixed veggies (peas carrots, etc..) I buy the green giant stuff. It lasts forever, you just take it out for the day, leave it in the fridge so it isnt frozen and feed it at night. or you can give it frozen too, Pocket my baby girl loves her snow peas frozen only! LOL I would for sure do that. fresh is great too but sometimes is expensive. Either is great! Be sure to mix it up too give them different foods every night so they don't get food boredom which these guys tend to get, if they refuse to eat something one night now worries try it again another night! Usually they will try more stuff if given a variety. I think Aerial was trying to (not so politely) tell you that ferret food is yukky! LOL My guys love their mealies live and thats the only way they'll eat them! The squiggly-er the better! It's kinda disturbing actually the way the hold it in thir hands stare at it, watch it wriggle then chomp its head off... LOL They also love crickets frozen or live. I put my guys in the bathtub with some live crickets (or the tent too) and let them go nuts! Soo funny to watch them hunt. Crickets are also lower in fat so a combo of a couple of crickets and some mealies is always nice for them! Try them on some different fruits and veggies and watch them go nuts! They will start to look for you when you pass, hoping for a yummy treat.OH Also if you decide to try some yogurt as a licky treat be sure to check the calcium content as well as be sure there is no artificial sweetener (aspartame) I use the Danone Creamy stuff (its my favorite too!) Have fun and let me know what they like!

really? thats awesome, I know Sam, they portrayed him badly in the show though, they made him out to ber a theif and so forth. but what can ya do, publicity is publicity LOL. it made him more famous either way...but yeah I have abarred caged, and what it is, The bottom of the cage has a pannel of bars liek the rest of the cage then under that it is open and and it's a tray you can slide out of the bottom that is all plastic, so I took the bar out of the bottom so it would be deeper for them, so if I put that pannel so teh bottom is all bars like the rest of the cage then I won't need bedding? there little feet won't accidently fall through or anything? Also thank you so much for all teh suggestions and help with everyone, i have gotten ALOT of answers i've been wondering about. you are all great.

p.s Don't forget to catch the new series of Ultimate fighter, Dana has signed on for 2 more seasons ontop of the one that just happend, plus 3 full PPV styled fights only on free TV, sort of like the finale fight for the ultimate fighter.

Ok, I would put the bars back in, that saves them from the yukkies of their waste. Once you do this you can certainly put newspaper and stuff in there so it doesn't get sticky and slimy and smelly (GROSS!) These guys won't fall thru I promise both my guys have a cage bottom just like yours, and they fly over it like it was solid based! No worries. If you've got lots of soft snuggly pouches, hammocks and stuff they prolly won't be down there much at all. I am going to PM you...

LOL, I always think my guys must really hate what I gave them for dinner when they poop in it, lol.

Definatly put a stinky (smelly as possible) shirt over the cage.

Check out diets and bonding!

Put the bars back into the bottom of the cage, they shouldn't walk in the bedding, and their feet will not fall through the bars, don't worry. I use corn cob bedding in the bottom of my cage. It actually seems to hold the smell realy well.

smelly shirt that you've worn.. Unless you really stink it shouldnt be a problem LMAO It helps with bonding if you put a shirt you've worn to bed a couple nights over their cage...

I just got my glider too, but before I did I read a lot about them. Especially on gc. A few things I'd like to comment on are:

1) Chicken wire: you said something about lining a room with chicken wire. I know you said not until you moved but so you can go ahead and be thinking about it, Galvanized wire is bad because they can chew on it and get a Urinary Tract infection. You should use hardware cloth or pvc coated wire or something like that

2) Ferret food: sounds like they don't like the ferret food which is probably a good thing because I have two ferrets myself and I know they need much more fat than suggies do. I've heard that if a suggie gets too much fat it can get fat deposits in its eyes and go blind.

3) Crickets: I got my Jenks from Carrie T (she's awesome!) on this board and she told me that you should only feed crickets as treats and not every day because they have a risk of aflitoxins. LOL I'm not really sure what that means but im thinking its not good.

4) Crabbing: Jenks likes to crab at me sometimes but a few people have told me that when he crabs I need to keep doing whatever it is I'm doing because if i dont he'll think crabbing gets him what he wants. Of course I'm sure if he's crabbing because something harmful is being done or something then Ill make sure that he's ok but if he's just crabbing cause he's grouchy they said to go ahead and keep on like he's not making a sound. And I have heard that about chasing them around the cage being harmful to the bonding process too.

I am not claiming to be an expert at all. As a matter of fact I'm in the process of bonding with my own suggie and have plenty of questions myself. I'm just telling you what I've found out since I joined this board. It'll also help if you can go back and read some of the other posts. I found out a lot of information that way. Good luck! And I'm sure that plenty of more qualified people than me will be ready to give you advice. I just wanted to touch on a few subjects that were bothering me that no one else had mentioned yet.

Isn't corn cob bedding the stuff that causes aflotoxins in crickets? Could aflotoxins grow in there with the babies?
