Ok, I noticed my friend's glider's nose is pretty purple. I haven't had many health issues, so I don't know what to tell her. She's on a proven diet, stool looks fine, no hissing while urinating and normal behavior. So...
What could that be a sign of? What does a vet need to do?
Thank you!

How purple?
Sometimes when my gliders get up their noses are a darker pink than once they're up and going...
...does it look extremely unusual?
Does your friend say it looks different than normal? Or has her glider's nose always been rather "purplish?" (Could this be normal for her glider? Or is it a sudden change?)

Thank you for trying to help. It's not just when waking up. I noticed on Saturday, that it was slightly purple. Today, however, it was much more purple. It actually looked slightly bruised.

a purple nose can be a sign of respiratory distress. Ok, I read about that. Also sinus problems, right? What other signs might there be with these problems?
She doesn't look/sound like she's have any problems breathing, ect. I did rub, pretty firmly, her jaw, neck, sinus area...well, her entire top half, to see if she appeared to have any discomfort anywhere. She didn't.

Is the glider cold? She should be seen by a veterinarian to rule out pneumonia or any type of respiratory problems.

No, she's not cold.
I agree...and she will be going in, in the morning. But, I would like to know what to ask him to do/look for.
Ok, pneumonia or sinus problems. I'm guessing she definetly needs an xray done. What about the fecal floats/smears. What do they test for?

Purple Nose is an indication that the glider is not receiving enough oxygen. I had a glider several years ago who exhibited a Purple Nose and I dismissed the idea that she was sick because she was eating and acting normal. To make this short... the glider within three days suddenly was on the bottom of the cage. She was rushed to the vet but unfortunately... by the time the vet drew up a syringe of an antiboiotic my little one died on the heating pad. A neucropsy was done and a slide sent to the lab at UMKC... seems she had a cocci bacterial infection which under normal cercumstances the bacteria would not have been an issue. Lab did not name what type of cocci as there are numerous types in the body to count. When the chest cavity of this little girl was opened... it was full of fluid which prevented the lungs from expanding. An inexpensive antibiotic treatment of fourteen days would have made her well. The drug of choice on the report was.... Baytril. I have to confess... I cried over the loss of this glider for some time as I was responsible for her well being and it was my fault she died of such a horrible death. She sufficated from her own body fluids. My suggestion is to seek vet Care ASAP. Good Luck and please keep us updated as to the wellness of your little one.

I only have a sec now, but will give details later. What KIND of purple? Is it red-purple or blue-purple? It makes a difference as to what the vet needs to look at.

to you Judie. It wasn't your fault. It's hard to tell with gliders and we can't always be right or wrong. They are such complicated little creatures. Many times I have run to our vet only to find nothing was wrong and this last time thinking nothing bad was wrong but it turned out it is. We just never know, we are only human. Praying purple in this case isn't anything serious! HUGS

Unless he actually did bruise it, bluish indicates lack of oxygen-or respiratory infection. Reddish usually goes more with sinus. Sorry for the delay-busy night.

Thank you. No delay...I had to go to bed last night, even though it was hard to sleep. I'm going to have to call my Bff in a few minutes and give her the news. I'm scared. She loves her so much.

It sounds like it's in the early stages...labored breathing, and clicking when breathing are usually signs when it advances, along with signs like lethargy and lack of appetite. It sounds like you caught it early, if that helps. vet is definitely a must as soon as you can though.

Just a quick thought before you think it's something serious when it MAY not be... I was SUPER scared once because I thought there was blood in my baby's stool... um... no... it was fuzz from a new pouch. So, check a couple things out: Is this kiddo eating blueberries? Black berries? Does it have a new DARK colored pouch that maybe the fleece hasn't been washed on? Anything that could have rubbed the nose? Check the glider's paws too... it's usually a good indicator if the paws are blue as well that it's something in the environment. I'm hoping for this sweet baby, that it's something simple!

I was terrified this past summer when I started noticing that my Leela had a purple nose. I was warned on here about the possibility of sinus infections or lack of oxygen. I got her to the vet as soon as I could and she checked out just fine. For the most part, her nose is only purple for a few minutes after waking up. He said it could be kind of like blushing or something, he said he has seen many many animals (birds especially) that blush. I hope that everything is okay with your friends suggie! Keep us updated.

I'm so pooped..but I wanted to give a quick update.
I spent all morning trying to get into see a vet. Apparently every exotic vet in 4 counties, is off on Wednesday! Seriously. So, we had to wait until 6pm when the after hours clinic opened. We were there 3 1/2 hours!
Thank goodness you guys supplied me with good info, because he couldn't find anything wrong, but gave us Baytril as a precaution. The vet is going to contact somebody at UT tomorrow, to see if he can get anymore information.
He was very confused because the edges of Baby's nose were normal pink colored. Only the center is purple and symetrical (sp?) on both sides. (My therory is that her entire nose isn't purple because we caught it early. But, maybe that's stupid.) I should have taken my camera!
Judie, my friend asked me to pass this along to you. "Please know that your baby may have saved my Baby's life. Thank you. Your glider did not die in vain." (Your story is now in Baby's chart!!)
On a lighter note...the Dr. was very impressed with Baby's behavior! She let him look in her mouth and was super sweet and still for him the entire time. Well, until she tried to climb down his shirt!!! He loved being able to give her a full inspection. He said he'd never seen a glider so loving!! I told him he should stop by my house, then!
Thank you guys for your support! I'll let you know if anything changes.

If it helps, Riker just went back on meds for sinus trouble (purple nose-too much sneezing and squeaking when he sneezes-his early warning signs). Part of his nose is still pink, but the purple wasn't going away while awake, either. It's better with him not to wait until it's obvious. The preventative meds won't hurt her, and heading off a full blown infection is worth a lot. If meds are working, 3-5 days should see her nose pretty much back to normal, but keep going with the meds the full course anyway-or you could create a resistant bug.

That does help, thank you, Jen.
The vet put Baby on the Batril for 10 days. Judie, you said something about 14 days. Should I talk to him about giving it to her for 14?
Here's a picture I took tonight. What do you guys think? Please be aware that she was getting cleaned up at the time! http://img.auctiva.com/imgdata/0/5/9/9/3/3/webimg/104358318_o.jpg

I always go with 14, 10 mostly just doesn't seem to do the trick with a glider. If that's dark for her, and it's not going back to normal, better safe than sorry. It's definitely got some unusual color-not bad, but there.

What if it's just the front of his nose? Like upper lip and between nostrils, to the very tip? I noticed this tonight as I was medicating (for internal parasites and morta bacilli.) Wouldn't the doctor have found something wrong when I took them in last week for their follow-up? They had a clean bill of health. I don't know if this is all in my head now because I'm still medicating them and still kind of worried. (I was told to medicate for another seven days, tomorrow is last day. YAY!) OK, it must be normal, because I just looked up pictures I took in the end of summer, maybe fall. The nose looks the same. Sorry for the big pics, but I wanted to keep them large so you could see his nose well and I was too lazy to go into Photoshop. First pic was taken several months ago. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3245/2296839771_53de31c0eb_o.jpgThis was taken tonight. (How cute, he's in the same bag.) http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3223/2296840139_cc7ab7f6c9_o.jpg

It looks like that's just normal for your glider.
I have a glider her nose looks like that but my other one his is a dark pink. They've always been like that.

yeah I was just cleaning cages and I noticed my little Rikku's nose was the same as the pictures from lgilbert. She had just woken up and is showing all healthy signs (i.e. crabbing her fool head off cuz she hates being woken up!) I think I'll chalk mine up to the "waking up" theory and look at her again tonight.

Now I'm nervous. >.< Thanks a lot! I just woke my kids up to check their noses and they weren't too happy about it but their noses look sort of like Gilbert's. (I think it's just normal for my kids...their noses look kind of blue-ish in the pics I have from Krys) With the clicking when they breathe, how often is it? I noticed that Yin was making 1 clicking noise every 20seconds or so while I was harassing her. I wasn't sure if she was just doing it because she was annoyed or if she might have an infection of some sort. She's still a little piggy and as hyper as ever though.
