Tell me what you can about HPW - I'm curious.

I found this:

http://www.gliderdad79.com/hpw.php

Is that a pretty standard recipe?

That's the recipe for the HPW diet. :3

A lot of people have commented on how feeding HPW makes their gliders fur look better and tones down the smell a little bit. Also, I heard that they look and seem healthier on it. Skinny gliders put on weight and fat gliders lose some so they're a nice healthy weight.

Hi Kiiru smile

I have noticed these comments too, and then realized, hey I haven't really done much of my own research on HPW. I'm starting to think it may be a good idea to move my breeding pairs to HPW since breeding demands so much good health.

I like my pellets - but I'm assuming they won't need the pellets in their cage at all times if they are on the HPW mixture?

But they still get plenty of fruits and veggies every night, too?

What about mealworms - do I cut back on those?

And what about calcium?

Hey Kara-

The calcium and vitamins and protein are all in the HPW mixture.

For fruits and vegetables, you have to do a little more thinking. You have to select those that are balanced in the Calcium: Phosphorus. It isn't really difficult at all. And, many many people, including myself, have noticed that gliders eat very few fruits on HPW. Mine finish their veggies and HPW mix every single night, but barely touch their fruits. According to something I read recently from Marz (in Australia) this is pretty natural behavior. Gliders don't really eat much fruit in the wild - more veggies.

As for mealworms - I've never really been one to give any specific amount. I give them for treats and my gliders probably get between 3 and 10 on most (but not all) days.

I did do my own research on HPW. I switched my gliders to it right after I got Jack - one of my rescues. He was in bad shape. Shabby fur, poor coloring, smelled. So, I took "before" pictures of all my gliders. The difference is really amazing.

Do you have some examples of fruits and/or veggies that are balanced?

I have ordered an HPW starter kit from Peggy and I've decided to switch my breeding pairs to it. Provided everything goes well I'll probably be ordering the larger kit from her soon, too.

Am I right that a single batch of HPW will last 4 gliders approximately one month?

I don't mean to rob the thread here but I'm curious now too lol. How long does one batch of this last per glider? People that have fed this and BML which one did you prefer and why? You can PM me so I don't steal the thread lol Thanks!

This thread:
http://www.glidercentral.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=422199
talks about how long a batch lasts, etc. You have to read down the thread, because she got the math wrong at first.

I made HPW last night. One batch made 54 cubes. 1 cube feeds 2 gliders. I measure out my cubes - and I use 1 Tablespoon (which is the correct amount to feed TWO gliders) plus another teaspoon (just to make sure). So, one batch would feed 2 gliders for 54 nights, the way I measure it.

Quote:
Our first discovery was the low Calcium to Phosphourus ratio in the "Mix" of the powder, pollen, honey and eggs. Even the absolute amount of Calcium is low. So that is why there are two analyses: one without the fruits and veggies and one with the fruits and veggies. We chose to use one tablespoon of Papaya and one tablespoon of Spinach because they have high Ca:Ph ratio in the hopes of offsetting the inferior ratio in the diet mix. By doing this, it bumps the ratio up considerably to 1.8:1 (up from a pretty low 1.29:1).

The bottom line is if you are going to use this diet, you need to make sure you are using higher-ratio fruits and veggies. Don't just throw the standard frozen corn, peas and carrots together because they have "backwards" ratios to begin with and that further exascerbates the poor ratio of the mixed part of the diet.

So they DO need calcium supplements - either that, or fruits and veggies high in calcium to compliment the fact that there is poor calcium content in the HPW mixture.

It isn't that they need supplements.

It is actually that the HPW has the right amount of calcium - but slightly on the low side of "good." If you use high Phosphorus veggies exclusively, you run the risk of upsetting the calcium amount.

That's why I always include Collard Greens in my veggie mix. And papaya in my fruits.

Can someone explain to me how I read calcium to phospherous ratios? I'm having a hard time understanding them. I know what fruits are high in calcium, and what is high in phosperous. But I don't quite understand the ratios.

Ok - I am looking for my information on ratios. But I think it is on my other computer. So ... I'll get back to that.

Calcium:Phosphorus ratios should end up being as close to 2:1 as possible. In other words, 2 Calcium to 1 Phosphorus.

So, if you were going to use a vegetable that had a C:P ratio of 1:18, you'd want to also use a vegetable that had a ratio of 18:1. If that were the case, the ratio of those two vegetables combined would be 1:1 - so you'd want to use twice as much of the higher calcium one.

Does that make sense?

It really is basic math, so try not to let the numbers bog you down. Once you have the ratios of your vegetables, just add the ratios together and see if they are close to 2:1.

Ok - found the info on ratios. It is not mine, it was made by Gail and Ed. I have a Word document and a pdf. I can email it to anyone who needs it. Just send me a PM with your email address.

That does make sense to me... thanks for explaining. It'll take me a little while to get over the numbers (never was a number-lover, ha!) But I can see how simple it is.
