I haven't heard anything about sugar cane treats for gliders. Anybody know if these are ok? Are they safe? Reason being, I was thinking this very well may satisfy Sassy's need to chew on things. I was just curious about splinters (if sugar cane even does that), etc. Any sagely advice out there in gliderland? Here's a link to a product I was considering: http://www.exoticnutrition.com/images/SUGAR%20CANE%20GOOD.jpg

Gizmo Loves Sugar Cane. I bought that from Exotic Nutrition, but then found out that the brand KAYTEE makes it for a lot cheaper, and the same amount of pieces. Gizmo does shred off some pieces and puts it in his bed, but i havnt had any problems with splintering or anything. I only give it to him occasionally though. When I do though he goes nuts for it.

one thing i was thinking about the splintering (and since it's not a "natural" food it may be an exception).. but you figure they shred wood to get the gum..

I've found these at organic grocery stores too where they seem to be the cheapest. I cut mine in half and freeze them. Then clip one half to the cage as a treat. I wouldn't feed it everyday, but my guys go crazy for it.

Thanks for the info. I'll check a local health food store and see if they have them. I'll give it whirl and see if the kids like 'em.

We have a sugar cane field near our house....maybe I should "collect" some. Fresh sugar cane is soft, green and shouldn't splinter, its more like celery...
The stuff you are getting must be dried?

Yeah, I'd be out there "borrowing" some of that fresh stuff oh say.... about midnight! The stuff I'm looking to get most certainly must be dried. Although, I could probably soak it in some water to rehydrate it. I'm not sure what that would do to the flavor/sugar. Like somebody already posted, they tear into bark to get sap, so they must be adapted to handle this as well. I must be a glider geek because now almost everything I look at or see I say to myself "Oh, that would be awesome for my buddies!" What's really a trip is when I'm out and about and talking to the gliders in the bonding pouch. Other people kinda tend to give you a wide berth and if you listen really closely you can hear mothers telling their children "Stay away from the nasty man who's talking to his disturbing necklace!" HA!

The sugar cane sticks I get are pretty moist.... not "dry" by any means. Just remember it's a treat...
