I don't often post on this board, although I lurk here at least once a day. Several months ago I introduced my Tom Thumb here. I had gotten him as an orphan from a pet store. He required several weeks of being hand fed and lots of worry about whether or not he'd survive. He did survive and I fell head over heels in love with him (so in love that I went as far as spending several hundred dollars on accessories and eventually wives for him). Every night last week Tom had found a way to escape from his cage. Each morning at 3:00am he would climb two flights of stairs to give me a face hug followed by a couple of barks. We'd then play the chase game back to Tom's cage. It was as if he escaped only to say hello and drag me out of bed. Friday night I woke up and knew something was wrong when he didn't come wake me up. I had cleaned their cage earlier in the night and left the 1/2 full bucket of water on the porch (it's warm here so I had the sliding door open to our screened porch). When I realized he was lost I took all the precautions I could think of to keep him safe until he came back. Unfortunately I was too late, I found him drowned in the bucket I used to clean their cage. There is no particular point to my post. I just thought I could tell my story and cry it out in a place where other people would understand. Thanks to all who read this.

Oh, Michelle, I'm so sorry about Tom Thumb! I remember your posting about getting him and rescuing him from the pet store. Your post reminded me of my first glider, who managed to get out of his cage every night, and one night just curled up in my hand and was there when I woke.

There is no doubt that Tom Thumb knew how much you loved him, and I'm convinced that rescues know what they've been rescued from and who has their best interests at heart. I hope you can rest in the knowledge that you gave him a great life with you.

I'm so sorry. Thanks for posting, and for reminding us about the dangers of water and our gliders.

Michelle I'm so sorry to hear that Tom Thumb has passed over the bridge. I know you loved him very much. Rescued gliders are very special indeed, they are like love wrapped up in a small furry package. May time heal your heart though I know you will never forget him.

Michelle - I can't say more than has already been said but know that I am sorry for your loss and I hope you heal quickly from the pain. Tom Thumb is happy at the Bridge - knowing you loved him.

Michelle,

I am so sorry Tom Thumb passed away. I hope your heart will heal quickly from the pain you are feeling at this time. You shouldn't blame yourself. We all make mistakes.

Thank you for posting your story, it is a reminder for all of us about how dangerous water can be to gliders.

Thank you

Wow! Thank you all for the heartfelt messages of sympathy! I've learned a lot about gliders here and now you've taught me that the people here are compassionate as well as knowledgable!
Someone mentioned that Tom had a unique name, I thought a lot about what I would name him. I came up with the Tom Thumb due to gliders having an opposable thumb and also because of their size. Take care,
Michelle

I am sooooo sorry for your loss I just want to cry. I have had Prissy since the weekend before 4th of July and she is very special to me even though she is becoming a teenager I think, she is about 9 months old now and is starting to bite me on the boob when I am playing with her in my shirt. I hope you dont think it was your fault he loved you and we can all see that. You were a very good momma to Tom Thumb and he will always be in your heart.

You will not be able to replace Tom, but your story will go a long way in this board. I do not think it was your mistake that caused his death. If it was not the bucket of water it could have been getting stuck in a kitchen towel or getting behind the refrigerator and hurting himself with any electrical wires. They are so active. I wish I could take the pain away with some encouraging words. I do envy the relationship you had with Tom. My Male glider(Marble) has a unique personality that I have never been able to bond with me like you did with your Tom. My female glider (Jax) was rescued from a very neglectful home (Her condition was really sad) and my vet told me she was older than dirt!
I fear I will not have her for too long.
If ever in the central Florida area please drop me an e-mail.
He will not be replaced but it seems that it would be a pity if all that love, care and fun would not be passed on to another glider when you are ready.
BEST WISHES
