hi all..just wondering..you know the long blacklights that people use..are they safe for glider eyes? we were thinking of getting one for the glider room for playtime at night instead of right now we have the lizards day time light on to give us a small amount of light (but its also keeping the poor lizards up )

We thought about that too but didn't know the effects on their eyes. We are thinking instead now of putting up a small rope light sting instead. We have some in the living room for other purposes and it has light a little brighter than a string of Christmas lights. I haven't asked the vet about the blacklights so I don't know. I just don't want to take a chance either.

So there is no damage to their eyes from it? That is an important good to know. I might go back to that idea if the rope doesn't seem to be as bright/dim as I think it will be. We have a very small bed reading light on the other side of the bed in the room which they don't seem to mind, but Angus doesn't like it on when he's sleeping cause it is over his side of the bed. So I was looking for something that would be dim enough not to bother sleeping people but ok for their eyes and let me see them when one wakes me or I'm up with them late......

remember the one I refer to isn't actually a black light... we did a lot of research before putting them in our glider room and only have one in each room...
they work great and are dim enough not to hurt them but bright enough i can see in cages and boxes and so forth...

You have the blue ones right? From the picture I'm thinking it might be too bright for the bedroom which is why I think I'm back to the rope lights like we have in the living room. We have them in several colors and they are not the chemical lights just colored ones.

they are called actenic lights and they are not bright at all... i doubt they'd bother you in your room but i don't know. rope lights are just normal lights and don't really help the wee ones eyes.

actenic lights? Where do you get them? Do you buy them online or can you just walk into say wally world and ask them "Where do you keep your actenic lights?" lol sorry.. but I have a slight phobia of the dark (childish I know) so when I'm playing with Jenks in the dark I'm always so jumpy that I'm sure it doesnt help his state of mind lol. Plus, I can't do it for long without screaming or jumping for the light switch and then he makes a beeline for the nearest dark spot.

I use light bulbs called "party lights" -that's the name on the box. They come in red, blue, and green. I have used the red and blue. It's just a regular bulb you but in a small regular light, but the light is red or blue. It's a very very dim light. The gliders don't mind it at all. You get them at any K-Mart, Walmart, Target, or stores like that. I like the red the best.

they are dim but i have had my gliders look up at them and then quickly move away so i assume it was from them not liking that light which is why i use the one i have now.
fuzzy.. we ordered ours online but some fish stores will probably have them as well that's where they are used most is in fish tanks

Yes, actinic lights are not black lights. They are mainly used in reef aquariums. They emit low to high levels of uva but very low to no levels of uvb depending on which type of bulb you get. 100% Actinic lights emit the color blue because they are used for lighting for deep ocean invertebrates. Sunlight is refracted at the surface of the ocean and as it penetrates downward, only the blue wavelength is able to reach that far.
