I don't have a glider yet but plan on getting one soon however they are illegal in MA. and require a permit to own. If it's at all possible I would like to own one legally but if that doesn't work I guess I'll have to be a rebel and break the law.
The questions I have are if they give out permits for owning them as pets and if so how hard would one be to acquire? I've done some research and the only permits I have been able to locate are for educational/scientific purposes.
Any help/info you have on permits and how to get one would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Thanks. All the links and documents on Mass wildlife and game sites point to them being totally illegal as pets.

So if you got one, what vet would be willing to take care of it? And you could never show it off to friends...that'd be sad...

I have a flyer and she is great! Similar in some ways, different in others to gliders. But definitely FASTER than a glider! lol She was left abandoned and isn't as cuddly as my gliders (but we have no history on her, so she may never have even been held, but she has come a long way since we got her!) If you get a young flyer, and finish hand feeding it, the bond is stronger than it is with a glider. They get VERY ATTACHED to their human. They have alot of the same requirements (although their diet is different). I believe there is someone on here that found a breeder in CT of flyers. You DO NOT want to go to a ' mill breeder', which if you do a search online, that is all that will come up! There is a great flyer forum, I can give you the link if you like, and they may be able to help you find a young flyer.

I almost want a flying squirrel more than a glider, since I'm more used to rodents, but they're illegal where I live.
So get one of those! No risk of having them taken away from you

I agree.. would you REALLY want to risk having your sugar glider taken from you and put to sleep??? I mean, you hear about it happening all the time with people who try to own an illegal animal.. Also, IF you did own one.. any of those vets you listed.. are ANY of the 24 hours? you almost need a 24 vet MORE than a regular vet because you usually dont notice that a sugar glider is sick until later in the night when they wake up.. I met someone with a CUTE CUTE CUTE flyer that was completely bonded to him. He went to the north east sugar glider gathering and had the little guy in his shirt sleep sleeping in his arm pit. it was REALLY cute!

Yes, Brenda. Flyers are illegal in CT but not MA. Ironically, gliders are illegal in MA but not CT.

Just a little tid bit of information, i obtained from a licensed owner in Mass...They will be legalizing gliders in MA it should be happening within the year...When my friend got his license the gentleman who issued the license was the one that told him...Yes this is second hand information but I couldn't help but share it...
