Ok, I was thinking about this the other day. I would someday like to breed BEW's (in the far off future..)lol But I wondered if I bred a BEW to an albino what would happen? Or an albino het to a BEW. The reason I ask is I have interest in an albino HET (66% I think) and I am 2nd on a list for a BEW but it'll be awhile before my BEW is even born... Are the 2 totally different strains of color genetics? Or would it even be possible to generate white colored gliders from a BEW/albino pairing?? I have studied equine genetics a little bit in college but glider genetics seem to mess me up alot LOL Thanks everyone for using little words and explaining this to me! LOL.....

I believe they are 2 different genes so you probably would only get hets out of that type of pairing....unless of course one of them had the other gene in him/her as well (like the albino het was also het for bew) I could be wrong because I have never thought of it but I am pretty sure they are two seperate strains of color genetics.

Elisabeth is correct. BEW and Albino's are two totally different variations. By breeding one to the other, you will never produce a white glider. That is, unless one if het for the other...

Okay, I need to make a correction to my origonal statement...

If you breed a het for leucistic, to a het for albino, all you will get is a 50% het leu/50% het albino glider... But, in thoery, if you were to breed a leucistic to an albino or vica versa, you will get either a leucistic or an albino. The reason being is that since both albino and leucistic are both recessive traits, there is no "normal" gene there to be expressed. There for, the more dominant of the two (leucistic or albino) will be expressed and that glider will be a 100% het for the other trait.

Make sence?

Okay coolness I thought so and I have been saying that since Jan and people have been saying it wouldnt maybe they thought I was talking about my albino het with a leucsitic het. But o well

Coolio! Okies Leyna, that's what I wondered but thought I was totally screwed up the head. LOL Great. Thanks alot!!! Now which one is the more dominate trait? LMAO just teasing you..... Thats cool though.. So It seems that if you want white gliders and aren't concerned if they have red or black eyes then you are guaranteed to have one or the other depending on which trait is the more dominant trait? Cool. But scary.. Let's hope dumb people who are out for a buck don't figure this out...

Breeding albinos to leucistics isn't a very good idea at all. Both have very closed gene pools and you are just asking for some type of defect by breeding on to the other. Infact, that's why breeders rarely pair 2 leucistics together. All you are doing by breeding 2 gliders from closed gene pools together is just making the problem worse...

Also, I think you would get leucistics, not albinos. Albinos generally have an absent gene for pigmentation, which can be filled in my by the leucistic gene, producing leucistics... That's just a guess though.

Hmm, never thought of that.... Which makes this even scarier for the crooks out there... It just proves the reasearch required when deciding to breed not just colored gliders but any animal really... For the equine people look at the QH and Paint halter lines and how bad it can go.... One is hard pressed now to find a line without Impessive somewhere in the mix. Not to say Impressive was a bad stallion but he was just "overbred" But that is off topic... Thank You Leyna, we can always rely on you for educating us! I need a day with you to pick your brain! LOL Thanks!!!!

ok so now I am lost! lol whats new right?!?!? I always thought that the leucistics had to breed with other gliders that had the leucistic gene in them to get another leucistic baby. So how in the world would a leucistic plus an albino be able to make leucistic joeys? Woulnd;t they be 100% het for leucistics and albinos? Unless the albino had the leucistic gene in it????

sil, since both albinos and leucistic are recessive traits, that means that the glider has 2 leucistic genes or 2 albino genes and no normal defult gene. If the glider had the normal gene, it would be normal colored. If you were to breed albino and leucistic together, there is no normal gene to be expressed, so it would have to be either albino or leucistic and a 100% for the other trait. Does that make sence?

if not think of it this way
ALBINO = aa
BEW =bb
GRAY=GG

Lets assume for a moment there are no hets involved....

The genes that are dominant (the ones that will always show) are capitalized. So a GRAY glider bred to say BEW would always come out to be Gb. Therefore making a glider show the gray coloration but carry the BEW gene. Because the joey must carry a gene from each parent.

So, an ALBINO (aa) bred to a BEW (bb) would come out as (ba) because the albino coloration is a misfit gene that has no pigmentation. Therefore the only coloration it can show would be BEW, but it carries the albino gene as well. Does this makes sense? The first generation is easy it's what would happen if that joey goes on to breed when I get fudged up..

Lol, it's all easy until you start threwing in multipul genes. try doing one that like: AaBBddCC x aaBBDdCC That's fun Got to love genetics class...

*Looks at Leyna's equation* Now I remember why I hated biology class and can add another reason to why I have no desire to breed any animal.

ummm. no thanks... Ill stick with my easy 1st gen genetics LOL... I was good in biology just not in genetics, and I am not thinkin' we got that far into it.... LOL... *yeesh* I would love someday to breed these babies but someone else would have to help me with the HET and 1st and 2nd gen and all that stuff...
