Is there a link of flowers that are OK for gliders to have? Or a website? What about kiwi leaves or grape leaves?
Thanks,
Diane

Well, there is a thread here that says roses and hibiscus are okay. Just be sure there are no fertilizer or pesticides sprayed on them. Also wash with water before putting them in there. I haven't tried it yet, but the ones who have say the babies go nuts for them!

We have some roses in our yard, so I gave them one and they did go nuts. They pulled it into the pouch. Then later all I found were bits and pieces of the rose. But I am wondering about edible human flowers like nasturshum (sp?)or pansys. I have never seen a hibiscus growing here, I will have to check on that one. My husband is very anti-fertilizer, so I know anything from my yard is OK.

Hibiscus grow in Hawaii and other tropical places. Here you can buy a little Hibiscus tree at Walmart. I don't know if you have one there. I haven't been in OR. since I was 5. I was born In Eugene.

My gliders love dandilions, both the flowers and the greens. They also have a great ca:p ratio!

I don't know about grape leaves, but kiwi leaves have been proven to cause bowel blockages according to Lynda Staker, author of "Don't Step Backwards" and Australian marsupial rehabilitation specialist.

To all of you wanting to feed flowers to your gliders...

Please make sure you are NOT feeding flowers that have had any type of pesticides used on them. If these are new plants you recently picked up from nurserys or other stores, please repot it and wait 3-6 months before offering any of the flowers, this will give the plant time to rid itself from any sprays or fertilizers that may have been used previously on them.
Do NOT purchase roses or any other pre-cut flowers from florists or any other stores and feed to your gliders as most have chemicals in/on them.

Feeding safe flowers is a blast to do as the gliders go crazy over them, but please do so using extreme caution and have lots of knowledge about where they came from and making sure the type of flower is completely safe for your babies.

Gardeners....go forth and grow and watch your suggies smile

What about granular fertilizer that is put on the ground, the kind that lasts 3 months or so? I can't remember what it is called, but it does not get on the leaves, etc... Is that safe?

good question- is fertilizer (natural or otherwise) safe to use in gardening for gliders (some things don't like it anyway...) I realize pesticides aren't and wouldn't want to use them anyway- they screw up my breathing sometimes too!

And what about flowers from the Organic grocer, like Whole Foods where the pesticides are not chemical? I was going to go buy a rose and a carnation from them to give the kids tonight.....???

So does anyone know about the granular fertilizers? Or organic grocers?

I would say no to regular granular fertilizer. When you water your plants the roots are absorbing not only the water, but the fertilizer. The fertilizer then spreads through the whole plant. Most plants will do fine without commercial fertilizers. In regards to organic grocers, not everything sold at the organic grocery store is organic you would have to ask the people there if it is certified organic or natural. Natural is a term also controlled by the USDA under the organic guidelines. I know when I go to either Whole Foods or Wild Oats that the people there are very knowledgable about the plants. I believe the wheatgrass that they sell is okay. I'm going to Whole Foods tomorrow, so I'll have to check that one out again.

Thanks for the safe and unsafe flowers for gliders list. I will be choosing a few flowers to try on my glider(s).

I thought it was just fertilizer that got on the leaves, flowers, etc... So, the stuff on the ground is absorbed, and is still toxic to the babies? What about potting soil? I am just asking cause if no fertilizer is safe, then my babies will never get to eat flowers.

I plan to start any flowers I feed my glider(s) from seed packets so I know there are no pesticides, etc. on them.

I just wanted to say thanks for checking out my list I worked very hard on it and am very glad it came in useful I'm writing a book now and hope to have all that information and more in the book. But I just had to say thanks for putting my link up, and very glad it helped

Now, with regards to fertilizer. There are many kinds of fertilizer. Natural types like cow manure and compost are excellent fertilizers and would not harm a glider (be sure no onion or garlic type plant is in the compost). Now chemical is a whole different ball game. You want to keep most chemicals away from the gliders. If you want to get something for them, try planting something from root or seed and keep it indoors. If you have to put something on it to keep bugs off, try spraying it with some dishsoap mixed in water. Bugs HATE this! lol. And with that all you have to do is be sure you have rinsed all the bubbles off... giggling. You don't want a glider blowing bubbles out his or her [censored] later... that's not good. Ok.. bad joke I hope that makes some sense

Hugs!
Karin Stevenson

I found a plant food that may be of interest it is called Terracyle Plant Food. It is made from compost, but can be purchased from a few places and is used on organic produce and flowers. I'm trying it out on some house plants to see how well it works. Also, on flowers at organic grocery stores - yes, they carry organic roses.

What about cows that have antibiotics, etc. mixed in their food? Is their manure still safe?

I think by the time they digest it, then it is decomposed a bit, then the plants process it, it should be fine. My yard backs up to a field that has about 6 cows in it, I just hop the fence for fertilizer most of the time. Since the bed I started is new, I mixed some granular fertilizer in to give it a boost. Now I have to wait another month to feed flowers
