Have you ever fed potato bugs to your gliders? Do gliders like them, and are they healthy? Thanks:o)

I have to admit, I had never heard of a potato bug before, so I had to go look them up on the net....kind of gave me the willies!!!

I have no idea if they are something that our gliders can have, but Im not sure it is something I would want to feed mine....creepy looking!!

Okay, I looked. Go to potatobugs.com and check out the FAQ That is pretty funny, especially the part about how to get rid of them! I don't know that I'd touch one, let alone give one to my precious babies! I mean yea, they eat worms but that is just spooky!

Oh no, sorry for all the confusion! The bug I actually meant is called a "sowbug pillbug," which are small and gray and live under logs (I grew up calling them potato bugs, lol. Didn't even know their real name until just now!) I looked on potatobugs.com, and boy are they gross looking! I would be more afraid that they would eat my gliders, not the other way around!

They probably have been crawling on the ground, and may have come in contact with harmful stuff for gliders. so I wouldnt.

I grew up in Ohio and we always called them potato bugs too, either that or roly poly bugs, since they'd curl up into little balls.
It wasn't until a few years ago I found out that real potato bugs were something completely different (and gross!).

As for feeding pill bugs to gliders, I have no idea if they're edible, but I'd worry about wild caught ones carrying pesticides and such.

Well I'm on the West Coast, and I grew up knowing them as Potato Bugs!!! So I guess it was a universal thing. But I looked at the potatobug.com website, and those things are.......strange. Not what I was thinking of.

Potato bugs! LOL. That's what I've called them growing up. Sow bugs are the flatter ones. Both are crustaceans.

I've fed one or two to gliders but I'd be afraid of pesticides. Plus, by nature, the creatures are ditritivorous which means they feed on decaying matter. I'd be afraid of microbes and such undesireables coming in contact with the pillbugs/potato bugs/sow bugs, and hence being ingested by your gliders accordingly. I'd also question, since they are so limited to eating mostly dead leaves and the like, how nutrient-rich they are in comparison to other arthropods that eat a relatively greater variety of food stuffs like crickets or mealworms.

I remember calling them water bugs. I did know what you were talking about though so we must have called them potato bugs too. I guess it is an east coast thing. Sort of like sprinkles or jimmies.
