I am not sure of the numbers of the males from the mosaics being able to reproduce from the Sterile lineage. Seems I read that Stacie and Priscilla have had a few that did. It also depends on how many generations from the orig Ringtail named Tilly.

Right now I have been holding one male who appears to be developing as an intact male. Poms are well developed and he also has his scent glands. However since he is only six months oop. I have not paired him to a female yet. Only if he is able to reproduce will I know he is feritle or not.

I will say... most of the males do not reproduce from the sterile line. Thus... when I sell my babies I will say for Pet Home Only and male then is usually altered before he leaves my home.

Some breeders may say... from Sterile lineage but may be able to reproduce. Usually there is some sort of agreement between the two parties involved in the sale requiring an offspring back to the said breeder of the male should the male reproduce an offspring.

Just curious, if the males are sterile, why have them neutered? (I just know I'm missing something after being up all night. lol)

In case they do end up developing. If a glider is sterile he might sell for $800, whereas if he is not sterile, but still from sterile lines, that cost will go up by $1000-3000. If they are unneutered and sold for $800, but then produce the owner just got a HUGE deal. Some breeders do a contract instead of neutering and if the glider reproduces they get the first joey or are paid the difference between the sterile and non-sterile price.

I have the little boys altered because many people what to purchase them as possible breeders. Should the male not be able to reproduce... then the little one is resold.

By altering the little males from the sterile line I know they are wanted as a Beautifull Pet in a Permanent Home. heart

Sadly, yes they do. I had Romeo neutered before he comes here. Yes, he was most likely sterile, but I wanted him as a pet, and he would have been neutered either way. It is sad to some these precious babies are only worth what they can make for some people.......very sad.

Yeah, some breeders do to make room for more breedable gliders. Generally speaking, your smaller hobby breeders don't. They breed their pets, and once the pets are done breeding... Well, so is that breeder, lol.

But with some of the larger breeders, they do rehome the breeders that are no longer producing to give them loving pet homes where they will get more attention and love than what they could provide as a breeder...

I just could never see giving up "breeders" (the animals) after they don't breed anymore. They should then go into retirement with a large environment and be spoiled to pieces!

I guess I get attached way too easy. dunno

Although the colors and mosaics are beautiful, my favorite will always be the gray gliders. (ONLY as far as color) I love ALL my babies the same no matter what color they are.

I agree. That's why I told hubby he'd better get us a big house, cause all my gliders(except the babies that are sold, of course) are going to stay with us for their entire lives! wink

I find it sad that gliders are sold after their breeding has ended. I know to some people it's a buisness, but I just could never...

Yes it is very sad BUT for the people whose only purpose was breeding then the glider then has a chance at a heppy healthy life in a forever home being loved and spoiled rotten as a member of the family rather than a "worker"

I had discussed this previously (privately) with Judie - asking her reasons for neutering probably sterile males. I was as shocked as you here to learn that these babies would be purchased as a potential breeder, then rehomed when that didn't pan out.

It would never occur to me!

I have Dylan. He is 5th generation - so there is a small chance the sterility has been bred out. But, whether or not he "proves out" - he has already proven himself to me! I love that little boy! He makes me laugh out loud. I couldn't even imagine rehoming him because he didn't reproduce!
