Can anyone tell me anything about the calico gene? I am thinking of purchasing a little calico girl, what would I pair her with to get more calicos?

Priscilla's pictures of a "calico" look like a stained mosaic:

http://www.thepetglider.com/index/photo-gallery/?g2_itemId=183

I don't believe there really is such thing as a calico.

I agree. Now, if that glider produced joeys that were born looking like that then I'd be an instant believer, lol.

I spoke to Tyler who works with Priscilla and he told me the calico in that picture on her site was wild caught and is the ONLY one like it. So no there are no calico gliders on the market for sale. Make sure if you buy a glider you get the LINEAGE on it and buy from a well known breeder as some one who is selling a calico glider I might be a bit worried about.

If that's the case then the coloring is most likely just staining.

That is interesting. Has he ever produced? If so, what kind of joeys has he produced? If he is a mosaic, he should have produced mosaic offspring.

Thank you gliderfreak, I didn't realize Pricilla's was a wild caught glider and the only one. I am waiting to hear back on lineage.

I'm not sure Stacie if he/she has had any babies don't quote me but I think Tyler did say some thing like that glider had not produced any calico babies which is why he said it was the only one like it. I know Priscilla has a few wild caught gliders. I actually was just talking to her the other night, She is a very nice lady ... but the calico never came up in our conversation I'll have to ask her some time.

Are you having the glider shipped from this person and are they a licensed breeder? There are many good and well known breeders here on the boards to pick from. Just be very careful about whom you deal with now days. Make sure you get a license number from them if your not sure about them.

She is not a breeder, she bought her from a breeder (waiting to hear back which one) and her DH hates them so she has to sell them. She has several different colors so I am going to go out tomorrow to talk to her to see what the scoop is. I am still feeling out how knowledgeable she is, right now I am not sure.

Hmmmm...I was just wondering if Priscilla's "calico" produced normal joeys and regular mosaics but no other "calicos" that looked like him.

Tyler, if you read this, was that picture taken of her calico glider when she first got him? If so, does he still look like that after being on her diet so long, or has his coat changed?

I know that I bought a "champagne" once. After several months on a good diet, I discovered a beautiful grey boy under all of the "champagne" staining. diet does effect color, so I am curious if P's calico maintained his color after being on her diet.

Thank you GizmosGal, I am wondering the same thing. The exact same thing (staining) happened to me with one of my "cinnamon" girls I took in who was fed hotdogs as a staple diet, so it was in the back of my mind that staining was the culprit.

I checked Priscilla's database and this is the only calico I could find:

http://www.sugarglider.animalpedigree.com/modules/animal/dog.php?id=329

She's only had a standard joey and is not a wild caught, she's from Mac and Cheese. dunno

I just sent Priscilla the link to this post and asked for her info on the calico. Lets see if she can fill us in... I know with the lineage charts some times they are wrong because they get mixed up.... So we will have to see.

Here is what Priscilla emailed me back about that calico...

The glider on our site is out of a wild caught gliders but he was born in captivity. He has produced but has not produced here. His color did change and I believe he was stained when he got here. The lady that had Mac & Cheese called all of her white variations calico but they were not tri colored. I’m going to have that classification taken off of our web site as we have another name for white variations.

Thank you gliderfreak...I am going on friday to see her, I think it is a whitefaced/cinnamon or some kind of variation of that. The breeder she got her from is here in Oregon and supposedly breeds white variations and cinnamons (we don't have any reputable breeders here that I know of who breed colors), I am still going to contact the breeder to get the lineage. I didn't realize calicos were so rare (well, apparently not existant). I saw the picture on Pricilla's site and assumed she came from her at some point.

Thanks, Gliderfreak. That is what I thought. I am glad Priscilla will be removing that "variation" from her website to avoid further confusion.

Well, you got your answer!!! You beat me to it!!!! The calico on Priscillas website named Hercules was I'm guessing severely stained when she got him. I never some him then but now he looks like your normal White vqariation with a white collar. He is out of sterile gliders and has fathered joeys but never with P. I am not sure if she has any of his offspring or not.
