Due to the recent onslaught of illnesses/deaths in Texas, I am not handling any change in Bugsy very well. My recent post in Behavior was just the beginning. He is chattering frequently (very unlike him)and there are small, almost indescribable differences in his recent behavior. Friday morning when I got him out, his little face was wet on one side. There was nothing else in the chin house that was wet. Now that I have thought about it all, I am extremely concerned. I am calling tomorrow and making an asap appt. I want to take him to the vet and have a blood count done. I don't particularly want to put him through that but I feel it is necessary to insure his health.

As you know, there have been several gliders meet their demise in this state recently and one of the things I remember is a wet face. I ran a search but only came up with 3 threads, none of which were the ones I was looking for. Anyone remember which threads I am referring to? I am afraid of waking to find him shaking - OMG.

Sorry to rattle on - any input would be appreciated.

Charlee...my thoughts are with you and Bugsy and I am hoping to hear that nothing is wrong after your vet visit. You should have the fecals done as well as a culture...Make sure he runs all the tests for bacteria and parasites...Sorry I don't remember exactly what everything is called because it has been so long since I went through it. Well not that long but in terms of remembering things like that it has... Kylie did have a wet face towards the end, but her whole underside was wet also.

I would not be alarmed unless he recently had a mate and it died. If he is a long glider...he should be safe from the wrath of the severe illness that is being seen in the Texas gliders.

Is it possible he got one side of his face wet from his water bottle?

If still not at ease...then by all means take him to the vet tomorrow. Request a urine, and fecal smear and if the glider is drooling then ask for a culture and sensitivity(C&S)of his saliva.

I have an appt for Friday - I really don't sense the urgency I once did - thanks for all the replies that helped calm me! I am sure I am over-reacting but so many changes in a short time..... Friday will be a big day for the little guy and I am sure he will need some time to forgive me. However, the peace of mind will be so worth it! I'll let ya know how it goes. Thanks again

Bugsy and I went to Dallas this morning in the pouring rain. He has an upper respiratory infection (a cold) but his lungs are clear. I woke today to find a purple spot on his nose and the vet said it could be trauma from his attempts to dry his nose. Baytril and love will, hopefully, take care of the infection. I am very concerned but glad to know it is not any worse than it is. Guess his cage will be moved to the living room where it is warmer - I will sleep in there till he adjusts. Poor little guy.....

So glad to hear that it's just a cold. What a great glider Mom you are.
I am sure he will recover just fine with all the love you have (and the Baytril LOL)
Make sure you keep us posted.

Busgsy also has a runny nose I take? Baytrill should do the trick. Keep him warm. Within four or five days you should notice a big improvement. If not..then need to take him back to the vet for a culture and possible med change.

Sending get well hugs.

In the past several months there were six cases of
shaking gliders in Texas. Most of them died. The
exact cause has never been determined. Don't know if it is something in the Texas area or just a
coincidence. The cases were reported in Dallas,
San Antonio, and Houston. These areas are seperated
by approximately 200 miles. There have been no
recent cases reported, to my knowledge.

Glider Greetings:

Has anyone heard if the necropsies of Ryan B's gliders ever produced a concrete conclusion as to the cause of death???

Mary h: Guess that I missed something. How many gliders in Dallas were affected with the shaking problem?? Was it a single event or were multiple locations involved??

Oh Marsha - So thoughtful of you to ask, especially when your hands are full with Koala! First, let me say that I am anxiously and hopefully awaiting her next update!

Bugsy seems okay - he still is not just as he was but I guess that's to be expected. I keep him with me as much as possible so I know he's warm. His appetite is lousy but we just had that full moon, aside from the affect of the antibiotics. He makes weird noises I am not accustomed to so that worries me a little but his nose is not as purple as it was the day of the vet visit. It is still a bit purple though.I am assuming the purple will go away completely when he is well? It is a new wrinkle to me so....

We go back to the vet 3/1 - I am confident all will be well by then. We thank you agan for asking!

Well, things are not so good after all. Tonight I noticed Bugsy's nose is very, very wet again. He was on Baytril for about 10 days..... We go back to the vet Sat. for a follow-up. Looks like we're still not in the clear Judie, you mentioned a culture - exactly what is a "culture"?

Oh yeah - he was on .03 ml baytril, twice each day

Charlee...I'm so sorry to hear that Mr. Bugsy still isn't feeling well. I'm also sorry I can't answer your question about the culture...I was told about it once upon a time, but it never got done and now I don't quite remember the specifics. I'm sure Judie or someone else who knows will get back to you with the answer. Just wanted to let you know you're in my thoughts.

Charlee , I am sooo sorry to hear he is not feeling well.. I think Judie was talking about haveing the fluid making his nose wet wiped with a swab and have a c & s done on it.. that is what was done on Koala's throat ... they did a culture and sensitivty tes on it , that is what told us what was wrong with her and what Med would kill it. I recomend having it done ASAP.... if I would not have have that done we would not have been able to get the progress we have gotten so far.

We returned to the vet today - Bugsy's nose was all purple again as of this morning. The vet did a fecal, UA, and a nasal flush for the C&S. Needless to say, Bugsy was a very unhappy little boy and I have the marks to show how he was hanging onto his Mama!! However, the US and fecal came back normal and now I must wait for the culture results to come back. Meanwhile we are back on the Baytril as his symptoms came back once the Baytril was stopped. Also, his lungs are clear. I am hoping it is some type of bacteria that just wasn't killed with 10 days of Baytril - maybe it needed 14 days!?

The vet suggested another round of Baytril and then the C&S but I said no, let's do the C&S now (thanks Judie & Marsha for the advice!)to eliminate the possibility of dragging this out even longer than it already has.

The vet also suggested that Bugsy's problem may be an allergy! I replied with a why not? - I have a pig with allergies! Please, keep Bugsy in your most positive thoughts for a return to health!

On a side note - some of you may already know this but I was astounded! We were discussing the shaking gliders, virus, etc. and I was informed that the virus Parvo lives up to an entire year!! Once someone has Parvo in their house, another susceptible animal must not be brought into that house for a year!!

[:"purple"]I knew about the Parvo virus living up to a year, but was just thinking can gliders get it ????
I do know that if you spray the yard with bleach and then flip up the top soil and spray it again you can kill it. But I still would not put any dog under a year old in the yard.
Most older dogs don't usually get Parvo, just puppies. [/]

Personally I do not beleive gliders can get Parvio from dogs.

It will take a week for the results for the C&S to show results. In the meantime...if your glider does not show any signs of improving...then I would ask him to switch to something that is a little more non resistant to a gram neg. bacteria. An indication that things are becoming worse is diarreah...or wheezing or the glider keeping his mouth open due to lack of being able to breath through his nose. I would also make sure he is kept warm so he does not chill. Monitor his fluid intake and his food and most of all monitor for dehydration. Any sign in change....seek help from your vet ASAP.

Let us know if you need more help. Will say prays for a speedy recovery.

Well, I spoke with the Dr., the C&S came back negative - nothing growing there I guess. Anyway, because Bugsy's little nose is still a bit purple and still wet and cold at times, we are trying a different antibiotic: Clavamox. I made another trek to Dallas today and picked it up. We will try that for 14 days and I hope all will be back to normal. The vet is still suggesting the possibility of allergies. Guess we'll see.

Charlee....This is awfully confusing... I sure hope that little Bugsy gets better soon. Maybe it is just allergies....is he feeling alright otherwise?

Charlee, I'm not sure how I missed this entire thread, but I did -- I'm so sorry about Bugsy. Do you have a definitive diagnosis? I'm not sure I've caught that. Sorry if I'm asking you to be repetitive. I'm just concerned. The clavamox is really powerful. I hope it's the right antibiotic for the problem. I'll be praying. I'm just so sorry you're going through this with Bugsy....

Amie - he seems fine otherwise, as far as I can tell anyway. He eats ok usually and is active: still running in his wheel, etc.

Lucy - is Clavamox harmful? I am so concerned about over-medicating him and causing more harm than good. In my head I know is nose was wet and cold. In my heart, I am afraid I could be overly concerned, thereby making me overly dramatic about his state. Can't win for losing.

Actually his nose is still purple so I know there truly is a problem. I am so nervous about all of this... I am suposed to give him the Clavamox for 14 days - .02 ml twice daily. What do you think about this???

Oh yeah - no diagnosis - possibly an allergy???

edit: The bottle says .02 ml - the nurse said .002
