First I don't know where this goes, so it is here.
Last night during tent time, I got lots of face hugs! On one of those, I got a claw in the eyeball while he was climbing to the top of my head for another launch! That really hurt, so now I'm a little scared of my face being a landing pad. Is there some kind of eye protection I can wear that won't scare the babies or hurt them when they land?

You could try goggles! Not the big jumbo ones- just the kind that fit right over your eye sockets!
I don't think it would hurt them if they landed on your head and happened to bump it a little, but if they are aiming right for your eye it might hit their stomach.
Either way- I'm visualizing how ridiculous all of us glider fanatics would look sitting in a tent with goggles on- hilarious!
The same happened to me a couple months ago. I had to go to the eye doctor a couple days later because my eye started itching and felt scratchy. He gave me some antibiotics just in case of an infection. The cornea was fine, but I didn't want to take a chance. I now wear some old glasses I had in a drawer. You can buy some cheap goggles at Lowe's or Home Depot. When I wear my glasses, the babies like to try and pull them off and get under them, so goggles have been better. Swimming goggles might work also.
Hmmm, maybe I'll call peeperkeeper and see what she says, I've already had one bad infection in that eye (corneal ulcer) and don't want another one! Swimming goggles might be the way to go, I think my son has a pair. *goes to check the toybox*

Never thought about the clear swim goggles. What a great idea, esp. for me, cuz I most certainly don't want to lose my eyesight on top of being hearing impaired. I must invest in a few pairs of those swim goggles for my own protection. Thanks for bringing that to light!
Hi, I got a phone message from Shawna while I was at lunch saying she wanted to ask me something about sugar gliders, but they must have written the number down wrong because when I tried to call, it said "cannot be completed as dialed". So I looked here, and now I know what she was going to ask!
Any kind of glasses/safety glasses/goggles would be fine. Swim goggles might be a pain, though because they tend to fog up. I would think even regular glasses would be enough to deflect a little claw in flight.
You're right to be concerned and if ever you do get a scratch in the eye that either hurts really bad or just continues to bother you for more than say 30 minutes or an hour, it's best to get it looked at. A big warning sign is if you suddenly begin to be a lot more light sensitive because corneal abrasions, ulcers and inflammations tend to cause light sensitivity. Also, abrasions pretty much feel like something is in the eye, so patients come in a lot reporting something in the eye that they can't get out (often they will even point to a specific spot on the eye, usually under the upper lid where they just KNOW the foreign body is located) and it turns out to be a scratch.
Even people's fingernails are among the worst objects to get a scratch on the eye from because they tend to cause fungal infections as opposed to bacterial or viral, and fungal is harder to treat. New moms get them all the time from their babies reaching for their faces while nursing or having a bottle, and those little baby fingernails are surprisingly sharp! So suggies' would be even worse.
Funny, I was just clipping Peep's and Jeep's nails when I was home at lunch, probably at the exact moment Shawna was calling my office.
Weird coinkydink. The patient I just saw right after I wrote that last post had a corneal ulcer resulting from a recurring injury originally caused by a scratch on his cornea from a child's fingernail last January. Dee-dee-dee-dee Dee-dee-Dee-dee (that's the Twighlight Zone theme)
Hey, Peeper, that's what I can do with those glasses I never needed in the first place! Kind of an expensive way to go, but at least it's not a total waste of money!

oh yes the eye protection debate. generic Oakleys work great. the problem with swim goggles if ya wear them too long they can pretty much give ya eye ball hickeys. My boys have to grab everything they can and that includes my eyes. They are definatly a danger if ya catch one in the eye. It hurts if anyone hasnt had this experience trust me it kinda hurts. Here is a pic of me in the tent in my tent attire.

ok the discription of my i dont want all scratched up outfit. That is an old army PT jacket, my hunting bibs, and a pair of wiley x glasses. The glasses are what the army issues us for being in the desert to protect our eyes. I call it the unibomber outfit. with the hoody and dark glasses that what i feel like. But its fun to go into my local store in just to mess with the gliders. The reason why we started this is because if darrel catches a claw in his left eye he is really screwed as he is blind in his right.
superman hides there or in my pants. it keeps them from grabbing my ears. or prevents the poo poo shampoo well it cuts it down a bit. It also prevents me from having major tear ups in case i have to go to the hospital wich seems like weekly anymore, but around here they like to corner you if you even have a scratch and ask is there a problem at home you want to discuss???? Thank god my regular OBGYN understands ive got critters and they can do some damage.
Oh the great thing about the bibs is they are good for hiding treats or toys in while in the tent. They have all the pockets in there it works great. and they are cheap and stains hide so well on them.
