My glider Dweizel was about 10 months old, he was very sick on Saturday morning. He was shaky, couldn't balance himself, lethargic very cold to the touch, had a pale nose and feet, and diahrrea. I looked up his symptoms and they matched dehydration. I took him to the nearest animal hospital immediately. the vet who saw him was not an exotic specialist (they didn't have one on staff that day) but he thought dehydration was likely and kept him for the day giving him subcutaneous fluids and sugar water in case of hypoglycemia. They let me bring him home that night, saying that he would likely be okay and he seemed a little better and ate some fruit. I stayed up with him until about 12:30 and I covered his cage to help keep him warm. He died sometime later, we found him at about 7:00 Do these symptoms sound familiar to anyone? I have never been so sad over a pet dying and I wish I knew what went wrong.

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your baby. It sounds like the proper treatment was given for dehydration. My concern would be that they did not tell you to continue with keeping him hydrated for at least 12 hours after his initial Sub-Q injection. I wished there were more to tell you, or more to say to make you feel better. Sending you lot of hugs and prayers. Godspeed sweet little Dwiezel.....
Moving this to Rainbow Memorials.....

I'm so sorry for your loss. Did they do a fecal to rule out parasites/bacterial infection? It's so difficult to know with ones this small, and they go downhill so quickly. You did exactly as you should have by taking him to the vet and giving him the best possible chance. He knew he was loved. Again, I am so sorry.

If we never loved, then maybe we would never feel pain. Love anyway. It's worth it.

Thank you for your thougful words. I used to live in Lake Montezuma, AZ just down the road. How long ago was that? Where did you go from here if you don't mind me asking. Was Dweizel your only glider? I will never have another glider. I have my original one, now 7, and its offspring left and I just won't go through that pain anymore. Losing the little guys that I did so far was just the WORST thing in the world for me. Lucy was 6 and I raised her from just OOP. She was my all time buddy. If I even look at a picture of her now, like 9 months after she passed, I still feel pretty bad. Time heals so they say. but it hurts like heck in the meantime. Take care! Pat

I moved to Denver from the Verde Valley about 3 years ago. My glider was given to me by friends in Camp Verde. I'm debating whether or not to get another one, I was really surprised at how upset I was when Dweizel died. I have had dogs and cats for years that I have been less emotional about when they died. I guess it's because gliders are such vulnerable little animals and I felt respoisible for him dying.
