Your vet can test your cat for toxoplasmosis-this is recommended to be done if you own a cat and are pregnant. When I was studying my animal health program, my instructor said that people who handle a lot of different cats have quite likely been exposed to toxoplasmosis. In healthy adults you may not even realize that you have been exposed to it (may just think you have a virus)-but it does harm to any unborn child. Toxoplasmosis can also be spread through contaminated meats-why I stress not feeding raw meat to any animal.

Ferrets can also carry toxoplasmosis. The incident rate is lower than cats but it does occur.
