Now is where the work began, we already gliderproofed the living room, and the room where she was the best we could.. I took her out of the cage and it was very traumatic for her me chasing her trying to get her back.. so I decided, I would start inside of the cage.. EVERYTIME I went into her cage I used a licky treat on my fingers, so she would see that I didn't want to hurt her, that all I was doing was giving her good things. At first I really enjoyed her licking so I would allow her to lick my fingers till she licked it all off. I could tell she was done when she started biting.. I remember thinking after the second time how stupid that really was.. because when she bit me, I would give her more. DUH...rewarding bad behavior.. well so I started offering her only a couple of licks at a time.. I always stuck my hand down into the pouch, every time that cage door was open. i ALWAYS had something on my fingers.. it was so nice knowing I was protected.. This bacame the norm, no matter what I say from here on in, this still continues...after a week, the biting, and crabbing stopped.. for that I was thankful.. each step I made, I made it thinking this would be the best i could get.. I didn't care..all I wanted to do is make HER happy..after about a week..I placed a pocket tee inside the center of the cage.(warnings on this to follow). I was thinking of just a place where she could climb about on, since she was out, she always went to the curtains.. I wanted to try to simulate what was on the outside for playtime.. and I sat and watch her at play each night with nothing more than a bug light on in her room.. the next day I noticed she was sleeping in my pocket of the tee I hung in the cage.. so I removed her pouch..and left the shirt..I continue with the lickys..After seeing her play I would notice sounds that would startle her, she would run back to the pocket and peek her head up.. I learned at that time to watch for things that may scare her.. It didn't dawn on me then that she found the pocket as her safe zone.... I started in the mornings to try and remove the shirt without disturbing her..that was harder than it seemed.. but each time she came up, I offered her the treats again.. a couple of days later, I was able to remove the shirt without waking her. I would just sit and hold the shirt.. I would then just try to put it on.. again without disturbing her.. when she did wake up, she ran around the room, I just hung her shirt back into the cage and let her run till she went back, trying now instead of catching her, just trying to guide her back in..Each day I did this, till I could put it on without disturbing her.. I would sit in her room, for several hours, I moved a tv in there so I had something to do.. when she would wake up, she would run back to the cage.. I would have to remove the shirt to hang it back up.. Again I did this till she stayed with me for very long periods of time..while she was on me, i would gently take my finger and stroke her through my shirt, offering her licky treats.. I started venturing through the house.. she again would come up.. that is when the idea of the cover shirt came in.. I figured if I had a cover over the pocket that she wwouldn't see that I was actually leaving the room.. I tucked it in so that she wouldn't come out the bottom when she had awoke.. I began to notice that not only did she not come out of the cover shirt, but that sometimes she would curl up and sleep around my hip...So I pinned her cage pouch inside of the cover shirt to give her an easy way to go back into the cage.. By this time I had her several months..This is something that takes lots of patience, and time.. I was spending up to 18 hours a day with Baybe. Always allow your glider to make the moves forward, don't move on to the next step until your glider is ready for the move....
If this is rushed you will have to start all over again.. The warnings with the shirts comes from problems that others have had over the years, so please if you do hang the shirt INSIDE the cage, please do something to prevent these problems...
1. Shirt falls from the hanger
2. Nails get hung up in the shirt
3. Only good for a single glider (Betsy makes some special bonding shirts now)
4. These shirt smell, the gliders mark them heavily.
5. Loose threads (always watch for them, in the tees as well as the pouch..
Always allow your glider to make the moves forward, don't move on to the next step until your glider is ready for the move....
Part 3 later on..
Thats an awesome story Bourbon! I have had Macy for 2 weeks now, and I have to remind myself that she moves at her own pace, and I must be patient. B,
both you and Baybe are a TOTAL gem!
it's stories like this that really get people think'n...
So so often i see posts about "wild Glider, Needs a new home" and "I'm so fed up i can't take it anymore"
It saddens me to no end to see people pawn there animals off because they either don't have the time, or the mind set to work thru the hard times,
Yet they love to refer to them as there "kids" and "Babys" and such.
I only hope that the few people out there that don't feel they can do it anymore, will stop and think befor getting rid of a great friend.
------------------
"Glideritis is wonderful and awful at the same time isn't it?" ~ Our Beloved Cynthia Whiteshell
Jaccobb
Kyle, Donna
Pharaoh, Amen Ra
Anubis, Anuksa Moon
and the babies,
Ba and Ka
Decaf coffie is for people who just don't get it...
