I have been very fortunate with all the joeys my gliders have given birth to (have never had a problem with rejection or cannibalism) and always had a feeling that I would not be so lucky when it came time to neuter my gliders.

Today, I brought my two males to be neutered by the only vet in the area who is experienced with glider care (a 45 mile drive from my house). The operation went smoothly, but when I went to pick up my boys, the vet informed me that about ten minutes after waking up from the anesthesia, the boys were biting at their incision sites. The vet’s solution for this, which I’ve never heard of for gliders, was to make them…get this… “pants”. So much to my surprise, instead of being given e-collars or something similar, my boys are now wearing bandages that look much like little diapers, which prevent them from accessing their incisions.

I’M WORRIED SICK with TWO SM’s on my hands… I was sent home with Metacam to use as a pain killer for the boys, twice a day for the next five days.

I just need to vent, really, and hear words of comfort. And I guess I’d like to know if anyone has had “pants” put on their gliders after neutering, and whether or not I should keep these on, or construct e-collars to use instead. The pros to the pants is that the two boys can stay together and comfort each other, whereas with e-collars they’d have to be in solitary confinement, since they’d be able to bite at each other’s incisions.

They look so pitiful hobbling around in their bandages, I nearly cried. Poor babies. I just can’t wait till they recover.

Also, I’m considering administering the pain meds by injecting them into corn kernels… would this be alright? I think it’d be easier than trying to hold them still so I can get it in their mouths with the syringe.

Those poor little guys. You really need to post a picture of them in their little pants. They may look pitiful but I bet they are cute.

hug2 Many hugs to you... I'm sorry to hear that your two little ones are having post neuter problems. I have NEVER heard of pants being put on them..is there anyway you can send a picture? Is there an opening for them to go potty?

Most definitely. I should have pics up later tonight. And the pants don't go back all the way to their tails, so they don't cover up where they poop/pee.

I'm sorry that I missed your last question (I was so fascinated over the little panties) grin
If you can it might be better to inject the medication into their mealies, but the corn would be alright too...this seemed to have worked out very well for me when I had to give medications to my glider.

I don't remember who it was, but someone recently got their glider neutered and he had to wear "little green pants", too. They posted pictures, but I don't it was on GC.

Huh. Pants. Never heard of that, but maybe some other members have.

I personally would give the Metcam directly and not in the corn kernels. Mine spit out the "husks" and especially if your boys were trying to SM I'd want to be making sure they were getting ALL of their meds. Get them when they're sleepy, and still in the pouch, and hold them firmly in the pouch. Then I gave Zeus a mealie, and while he was munching, I slid the syringe into his mouth and squirted in the meds. He really didn't fight me much at all...I bet you could do the same with your munchkins.

Best of luck hug2

No, I don't have to change them. They can't glide, but they are jumping around a lot more than I expected them too, so that's good.

As far as administering the pain meds, I gave them their first dosage, and it went much better than I expected it to. It wasn't exactly a walk in the park, but it wasn't impossible, either.

Do the diaper pants look the same on the underside? I'd love to show my vet these pics. I'll be taking some in for neutering by summertime. I think it's an excellent idea vs an e-collar. Thanks for sharing!

I agree with it being a great idea! If it works out well it could be a great way to go instead of an e-collar for neuters. Takes the hassle out of changing their feeding and drinking dishes and any other problems they might encounter with a collar on. Please keep us posted on how things go for them.

I'm curious to know what type of material they are made out of. Also, are they secured with tape tabs (like pampers)?
My concern would be if the gliders can chew or pull them off.

Yah, I'll be honest...

The pants are ADORABLE...

But if the boys are showing any sign of interest in SMing, I wouldn't trust them in just the glider diapers...it seems like those would be easy to rip through pretty fast for a glider with sharp teeth, unless they are made out of sturdy material and we just can't tell from the picture.

Hugs to you and yours hug2

Too Cute, his ears are up so it doesn't look like the little glider diapers are bothering him too much. Are they fussing with the diapers or are they just playing and eating.

If they start fussing with the diapers then I would put them in a collar. Poor little guys, but is is cute.

It doesn't cover the place they poop/pee out of, so they're alright. As far as sanitary or not, I'm assuming that the vet knows best and that it is sanitary. dunno

Pretty much, I'll try to get pics when they wake up tonight.

They seem to be made out of gauze and medical tape, but I will get a closer look. They don't have tabs, really. The tape is wound around to keep them in place and secure. And they haven't been biting or pulling at them as much as I expected them to, thank God. Last night they were too busy eating and attempting to jump to bother with the "pants" much.

I am keeping an eye on them, and if those diapers/pants start to come loose, they'll go in collars immediately. But they seem to be good, so far. thumb I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Like those pet monkeys in diapers! FAR cuter than it should be!

I would love to see how effective this is. Heber's already been fixed and thank goodness didn't even seem to notice his wound at all, but this could be a blessing to many... IF it worked.

Actually, my late Cassie, a neurotic Sheltie, used to wear plastic lined pants on her front legs because she would lick them till they bled... even to the BONE. It was awful. She had many an issue. I miss her so much though.

Update...

it's been about 48 hours since their surgery, and the older glider, Boo, still has his pants/diaper fully intact. Doesn't seem to be messing with it much. His son, Pilot, however, has gotten part of his bandages undone. Haven't gotten a good look at him yet, so I'm not sure if he has access to his stitches, but I will check tonight.
