The other day at work, a customer of mine had said something about gliders becoming illegal in Texas. I don't know that there is any truth to this, but I thought I'd see if anyone else had heard anything similar.

Maybe they'll just make mill breeders illegal in Texas. Wouldn't *that* be a happy day!?

I haven't heard a word about that..... I would love if they made mill breeders illegal. I end up with half of my babies being dumped off at petco after being bought from a local MASS breeder

Actually, I'm not entirely sure they are legal in Dallas proper - I know that they are not in Irving, yet that is where Mcgrath is. I doubt any law like that will fly in Texas.

They are not legal in Dallas.

Nor are they legal in Richardson, but they are in Garland and Plano. It's kinda screwy, to be honest.

I know suggies are exotic but what makes them illegal in some states? diseases, health issues,??? what???? just curious if anyone knows?

Each city has it's own ordinances. While gliders may be legal in the state, the city can still ban them... For example, ALL exotics are illegal in the city limits of Detroit, but threw most of Michigan, exotics are legal. There are various reasons to ban exotics and it varies from city to city.

Lisa i'm not sure how it works in texas but suggies are legal in the state of louisiana but banned in baton rouge. I called WLF and they told me that as long as i can prove that i bought my suggie from a pet store or a reputable breeder than it was ok to have them... I dont have to get a permit for her or anything.. but you might want to call and check just to make sure..

According to a supervisor at Aminal control in the City of Dallas, they are not illegal as they are considered Pocket Pets. Ft. Worth also considerers them Pocket Pets. The only city that I know of here in North Texas that requires a permit is Desoto.

They are not legal in Dallas. I live in Dallas and have not heard anything about them being illegal until now, and I've had gliders for several years now. There are some pet stores that sell them in the area, but most major names (Petco, Petsmart) cary care sheets for them but do not actually sell them out of consideration for the animals (they're closed when the animals would be awake and would not have any chance to socialize them. not to mention that the constant in and out of animals in glider colonies in a pet store environment would be traumatic to them , as they have a chance to bond with one another and then are separated through the natural process of the sale). But no one had mentioned illegality until now. I became highly concerned when the customer mentioned it particularly becuase she does the web design for Fox 4 news locally here in Dallas, and her husband is broadcast reporter for NBC5 (Ken Kalthoff) in Dallas, so they're usually pretty up to date on stories about changing of local laws. It is reassuring , Angie, to know that animal control seems to have heard nothing of the sort. The glider community can always count on you.
