It's been a long time since I last posted here, I know. Now I am just looking for some good-healing vibes for one of our suggie boys.

We went in to feed everybody late last night, and found Teller clinging to one corner of his cage, one arm reaching out through the bars, barely responsive. We immediately started offering him water, apple juice, and any licky treats we could think of, and phoned the exotics vet on-call last night. She told us that we could bring him in to the clinic for fluids, hand-feeding, and an incubator, but they would not be able to perform any test until the clinic opened in the morning anyways. At the time, he was responding to us hand-feeding him (though still very lethargic) and keeping him close to an infant heating pad, so we opted to keep him home until the clinic opened. We stayed up with him all night, and by 6am he stopped accepting the hand-feeding, and it was clear that he was dehydrating rapidly. We called the e-vet back and met her at the clinic two hours before they opened.

While we were there, he got an injection of fluids, and she managed to get him to eat some nutri-cal from a syringe. She got him set up with an incubator, and I don't even remember what else (I haven't slept yet, so I am having trouble recalling) and we left him at the exotics hospital for monitoring and tests.

We got a call at 10am letting us know that he was still hanging in there, though, didn't note much change in his condition. The good news on the tests is that bloodwork doesn't show anything glaringly out of the ordinary. The bad news is that because of the negative blood test they still don't know what we are up against.

The theories now are:
1) Neurological/depression
2) Toxin... potential liver damage
3) diet

We haven't changed anything recently, so I have no idea what could have triggered any of these, other than potentially a bad batch of food (we've thrown away anything that they've been eating recently and getting everything brand new). He's a few months over two years old, and he was perfectly fine the night before (as far as we could tell, anyways).

Sorry, this post turned out to be much longer than I intended. At this point, there really isn't much we can do but wait and pray. Please send our little boy Teller some healing vibes, and I desperately would like to hear some encouragement and recovery stories.

Thank you all so much.

hug2 Cynthia, I'm sorry to hear that your little one is not doing well. Hopefully with the sub-q's and medications they are giving him today will help him along.
You mentioned something about 'bad' food....do you have other gliders that have eaten the same batch? If so, I would suggest that you bring them in for a check up as well.
Sending lots of prayers your way...Please keep us posted.

Linda,

Thank you so very much for the support. We have one other suggie, and we've been keeping a very close eye on him since last night, too. So far, though, he seems just fine. He's not acting lethargic, no weird behaviors, and no bad body language, either. Of course, if the vet determines that it was a food problem or some other environmental toxin, we are going to be taking him in whether he is acting sick or not, too.

Teller has been hanging on for about 13 hours now since we found him acting sickly. I really hope the sub-q fluids help him perk up enough to eat something more than a few drops here and there. They also have him on a general antibiotic, just in case.

I know we are doing everything we can, but it is still just so heartbreaking.

I'm so sorry your boy is sick Cynthia. hug2 I know they ran blood, did they do a fecal as well? I know my girl suddenly got really lethargic, stopped eating, and got very dehydrated and ended up she had Giardia. She's fine now, but there is only one med that can kick Giardia, apparently. dunno I hope they can figure something out to help him. Sending lots of prayers and hugs. hug2 hug2 hug2

Gretchen,

I don't know if they did a fecal. I had to go in to work today, but my husband opted to stay home so he has been handling the phone calls with the vet the past couple hours. I will ask them if they did any fecal tests (I doubt it, though) and pass along your info to him to discuss with the vet.

Thank you for the suggestion. I am SOOOO glad to hear that your suggie is doing okay. The last several things I've read have me in a complete doom & gloom mindset, and it really has made my day to find out that a suggie has survived these symptoms before!

Thank you thank you thank you!

Amy,

I hope they can help Teller out, too, and that he can come home soon. I am worried sick! I do know that we are doing everything we can, but I'm one of those "what if" people and I just keep stressing myself out over it.

Thank you for the encouragement!

I just wanted to post an update for everybody.

The vet called us late last night to tell us that Teller was still with us, and with the sub-q fluids and hand-feeding that he's been receiving, he's starting to regain some strength. Apparently he played a brief game of chase with the tech that he's staying with yesterday evening. A slow game of chase, but he wanted to play, so that is a good sign... I hope.

So he's not out of danger yet, but things are looking promising. Keep those good healing vibes coming!! They seem to be working.

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!! laugh

Another update!

It has been a little over 36 hours since we first found Teller unresponsive in his cage. A few minutes ago we got an update from the vet saying that he is actually moving around, eating willingly, and was even trying to make small jumps. His eyes are open and his ears are back up and alert. His coordination is still a little bit off, but considering that two nights ago he couldn't even pick up his head, this is improvement is AMAZING.

Of course, there a chance that something could still go wrong... but I really hope not. We have been asking for a miracle, and right now it looks like we may have just that. Please let the miracle continue!

I'll keep you all posted on his progress as best I can. (My internet access over the next week is going to be limited.)

Again, thank you all for your support and encouragement!

I posted a week ago that something could still go wrong, and it did. Well, at least nothing got better.

We put our sick suggie boy to sleep this morning. After a week of intensive care, his improvement was only minimal. When we went in to see him, he literally crawled into my husbands arms and went limp. Today, he was only waiting for us.

So now he's gone. Our poor, poor baby.

I don't feel up to describing all of the details right now. I know that we did everything that we could for him. We opted to have the necropsy done, so that hopefully he can help teach us something that will save another sugar glider down the road.

Thank you all for your support.

I am so sorry for your loss! I just can't imagine going through all that only to have an unhappy ending. You did your absolute best to help Teller! Hopefully, like you said, you will be able to find out more info in the future from the necropsy. Thinking of you and your little Teller!

I did forget to mention, it was actually Penn that we lost. He was so sick and they look so similar that we made our best guess at the time. Since then, as we've been playing with our other suggie boy, we realized that the healthy one is actually Teller.

I feel really dumb that I didn't mention this before, I honestly thought I had. We figured it out shortly after my last post.

So anyways, it was Penn that was sick and now gone. Teller is still with us.
