It seems like there are alot of horror stories out there about sugar gliders being self mutilators. In fact, it seems that sometimes that's the only way they go... Does anyone know the actual statistics of how many gliders go the way of self mutilation?

I don't have the statistics for you.

I do know that often times we hear the horror stories about SM, rejected/canabalized joeys, illnesses and such as that is most likely when someone will make a post for help and advice. I think the percentages are much lower then they sometimes seem.

I have had gliders for 7 years and currently have 22. I have had 14 joeys born in my home (and have 4 ip right now). I have had 8 males neutered. My oldest glider is between 8 and 9 years old. I have never had a SM, or rejected/canabalized joey. I have never had a sick glider (Reep isn't "sick" he is just having issues with hair loss but is getting better now). Whisper came to me with an infected (was being treated) mating wound but it has completely healed now.

These are just my personal statistics. I know many people have had to go rounds with anti biotics and other medical issues. SM does happen. Rejected joeys does happen. Canabalized joeys does happen. Illness does happen. But I think it happens less often then it seems.

Here on GC, we hear the horror stories but we also hear the good stories. Sadly, we (as human nature dictates) tend to remember the horror stories more vividly though.

Teresa

Where your boys nurtured with the poms removed? I had my boys poms removed was not very educated on the subject and now I'm not sure my vet was either. I just recently read on the post that the open wound left can cause SM? I have a joey I am going to get neutered (Dad did his thing before I had him done) I'm now worried about the possibility of SM. My boy broke the glue seal but healed fine naturally with no meds. Any recommendations for the future?

SM occurs in about 1 in 1,000 gliders (I believe that's it), both male and female, for varying reasons..neutering, illness, injury, infection among them. On an even more rare occasion, there is no reason found at all that we can pinpoint..it could be a genetic or other problem we just can't see. You just tend to hear about the problems as opposed to those who don't have any problems, since people don't seek help or panic if a problem doesn't exist, normally.

The least risky course of neutering, is to leave the pom, remove it's contents, and leave the wound open to heal (No glue or stitches). Gliders who have the pom removed tend to SM more frequently likely because the glue or stitches that have to be used to close the wound bother them. They feel they have to try and groom it off (like anything else that gets stuck in the fur), and hurt themselves in the process. Being in pain, they think they are under attack, and attack back by chewing, which, of course, makes the pain worse, so they chew more, etc...a vicious cycle.

Interestingly enough, males who are already SMing BEFORE being neutered in the areas of the cloaca and penis, seem to have a much better chance of living collar free and making a full recovery, if they have the pom REMOVED when neutered, provided any damage is minimal to none. Since an SM glider is already in a collar to start with, removing the pom is not an issue for such a glider, as they can't get to it in the collar anyway. My Riker has been collar free for 2 years, though he will always be at risk for SM...meaning if he gets hurt or a bad infection, he could try it again. Of 6 males I've had neutered, Riker was the only one to have the pom removed, and was SMing his penis/cloacal area prior to neutering.

I hope this helps answer your question to some degree. It's something to be aware of, and prepare for just in case, but not something to obsess or worry over chronically.

I have had 32 gliders neutered and had no problems. Our vet does a ring block then neuters leaving the pom-pom, puts in one sub-Q stitch and gives them a pain shot.
Out of the 108 gliders that have been here, I have had 4 self mutilators come in, 3 females and 1 male. The male we lost, he was in very bad shape. All the others recovered and are out of e-collars. I helped care for a SM who had a penis prolasp, then started chewing on his tail. It was discovered he had a UTI and parasites. Once he had a tail amputation and the underlying problems treated he recoved and is out of the e-collar also.
(Our vet is learning more about SM, but will refer owners to us for questions. Its funny to get a call from someone saying "the vet told me to call you." I am always saying call the vet)

SM being more at risk when removing the pom is that only during the healing process? I got one glider already neutured and his pom was gone. It is completely healed. The two I got nuetered by my vet had poms left on.

As far as gliders dying I think they mostly die of illnesses that don't get caught on time. That is how my Yoda went. I just found him in the cage moving really really slow. We rushed to the emergency vet, but he died there.
