Hello,
Has anyone had experience with these breeders? They are in Northwestern Ohio (Montpelier). They are USDA licensed.

Just trying to find a reputable breeder that is close to me.

Thanks!

I looked into them but not real sure.

You could try Leyna (on here). She has some super sweet gliders. She lives in Western Ohio.

Never heard of the one you are asking about, Sugarluv. But I do know that, while it certainly is required, a USDA license means nothing.

I have heard wonderful things about Leyna's gliders, however.

I looked into them when I was looking to add a joey after I had gotten my 1st pair... They didn't seem like someone I'd be comfortable buying from, so, I spent almost 17 hours driving round trip to SW Illinois to pick up Wiggles from Lynsie instead..

I researched that breeder a few years ago when I was deciding on a breeder. Personally, I chose not to buy from her because there were a number of red flags for me. If I remember correctly, this breeder sells gliders at reptile shows, which I don't want to support.

As far as large-scale breeders I think that Gail is one of the better ones. Some people on this board might consider her a mill breeder so I certainly do not want to start anything about that so, please, no flaming here, I am just trying to answer the OP's question. She takes very good care of her animals, when I visited her facility (back in 2000) they were clean enough to have passed a food inspection had it been a resteraunt, and she handle her babies. She does sell at reptile shows but she recommends that people new to gliders visit her at her home instead of buying from reptile shows. She also recommends leashes, which most people don't but she generally seems to have the right idea about how to care for these guys. She sends e-mails out with care sheets on diet (including BML), bonding, etc and between that and her website you will pretty much get the same information that you'd find people give on this site.

My first pair came from her back when she had less than a dozen breeding pairs and they were so amazingly sweet and easy. That was eight years ago, though, right after she's gotten into breedinng sugar gliders. As my boyfriend at the time also bought a pair from her I had been out to her farm twice. His gliders were also very sweet and tame. She used to breed all manor of exotic Pocket Pets then and now only breeds sugar gliders, hedgies, and chinchillas I have heard some mention on this board that she has many more pairs of gliders now, though I haven't verified this. They do all have names, though, and I am pretty sure she tracks their bloodlines.

Recently I got another pair from her, having contacted her first because I'd had such positive experiences with her before. Of the two, one was a bit difficult but it seems to be in his nature to get highly stressed out by new situations. He is a VERY sweet glider right now as long as I don't throw new things at him (such as the vet trip today, yipes!). His brother was very sweet from the start. They are BIG, healthy gliders.

I can tell you, though, that I just picked up one of Leyna's babies this past weekend (pictures coming soon!) and WOW he is SUCH a doll!!! In fact, I wasn't even really looking to get another glider but when I saw him advertised on this site and saw how everyone had only good things to see about her babies I just couldn't get him out of my head. I'd read a lot of posts from people saying how sweet her babies are and this guy is no exception. Though I've only had him a week, he was the best behaved for the vet today.

Good luck glider in your glider search!

I rescued a little girl that originally came from Millermeade a few years ago... the teenage boy that had bought her, firstly did not know what sex she was; was told by Gail that her 18" by 18" by 18" cage was more than adequate; a wheel was not needed; to feed happy glider pellets with one piece of "treat" of fresh fruit per night; she had one dowel rod perch and a cell phone case as her pouch. The poor thing would do circles around the top of her cage trying to get enough exercise in such a tiny cage, and would do it even after I'd moved her to a flight cage. It took me at least a month to get to where I could put all her dinner in her cage at the beginning of the night and have her not just sit and eat every morsel as soon as I put the dish in. For weeks I had to feed her in two sittings so she wouldn't make herself sick. And remember Gail had told her owner he was doing everything right, and that I was a bad breeder and just wanted his glider to breed her. So... no, I would never recommend anyone to buy from someone that tells people that such poor care is fine for gliders.

Awww, I feel loved heart She's a nice person and I feel that she is very knowledgeable... There are other options for breeders around here though. Becki is in North Indiana, I am in Midwest Ohio, There's Tonia up by Detroit.

Thanks for all the info and breeder recommendations, everyone. I did find out that she no longer goes to reptile shows and only sells from her home. So a plus there...... Very nice from what I can tell so far.
Still just doing LOTS of research at this point, although I do feel like there will be 2 female gliders joining our family in the next year or two!

Leyna, do you have a wait list? We are interested in the standards...

If you have doubts about Gail, call her smile In fact if you are close, go for a visit. The person who was told an 18 X 18 X 18 cage was adequate may have been misinterpreting her instructions, especially considering the boy didn't even know the sex of the glider. Not trying to judge, but it makes him sound like he just may have been the type of person who doesn't listen to instructions well or maybe just doesn't even care. I am not ruling out the possibility that he was indeed following her instructions properly because I certainly don't know all the facts of the situation, just saying it's possible he wasn't. Sometimes people try to justify their actions by placing the blame on others, i.e. "I was just doing what I was told to do". She sells Wodent wheels, at a very reasonable price, so I don't know why she would tell anyone they don't need one. The unfortunate part about being a larger scale breeder is that you cannot be as choosey about who you sell to, which means it's inevitable that you will see some of their babies showing up in rescues. It's a personal decision whether or not you want to patronize this type of operation.

There are plenty of good small hobby breeders out there. Most of them are not breeding for profit and want to see their babies go to good homes so these are also good options to explore. You will find plenty of them on this board.

sugarluv, no I don't really have a formal waiting list, but I do have a little contact list... If people think they might want a sugar glider from me, when I have a baby available, I'll contact them.

Actually, I have 2 babies that should be OOP here in the next week or so. They should either be standards or WT's. I've got my fingers crossed in hopes that at least one is a WT, lol.

Leyna,
We probably won't be ready to get gliders for another year or so, but I will DEFINITELY keep you in mind for when the time is right! I would say put us on your list, but you probably don't want to bother with that yet smile I'm sure I can't go wrong with all the great recommendations for you!

Also, if it would be possible, I would love to come for a 'visit' some time to get better acquainted with 'all things glider' before committing smile

Thanks,
Laura

My daughter bought 2 neutered males that originally came from Millermeade. They weren't very tame but that could have been the previous owner and not Millermeade. Gail did spend about 2 hours with me on the phone even though I didn't buy from her. She did suggest the pellet diet but said the other diets are just as good. She didn't agree with what she called a "cluttered" cage because she feels it prohibits them from gliding. She couldn't give me oop dates for the boys or their lineage. She didn't even know if they were brothers. She is very knowledgeable though and her customer service is great! We no longer have these boys now but they are doing great in their new home and have bonded with their new owners. I still get visitation with them. cloud9 I would buy from Millermeade (as pet only) but I've seen pictures of Lynsie's gliders and they are sooo pretty.
