I used to think I knew, but now I'm becoming confused. Hopefully someone expert in color breeding will answer. I used to hear of blondes, leucistics, cinnomons, grays...white faced blondes...now I'm reading about silver grays, black beauties, chocolates....it's getting pretty confusing.

Here are the ones I can think of: Grey White Faced Blonde/White Faced Grey Leucistic Cinnamon Mosaic Platinum Black Beauty Buttercream
I don't think chocolate or brown is really a color, just a slight variation off of a grey. I'm sure I'm missing some colors though.

Well, it all depends on who you ask. There is no set standard for glider colors, so it's all a matter of oppinion at this point in time. The colors that are generally accepted by everybody are:
White Faced Blonde White Tipped Leucistic Albino Gray Cinnamon
From there on out, it's kind of a matter of opinion thing... Some people include every color under thr rainbow. Some people have different definitions for each color. It just depends who you ask.

The way I see it is....
Buttercreams Black Beauties Lions are all classic grays with different highlights or shades to them. Yes they are different but shouldn't charge more for them. It is kind of like human hair! There are all sorts of shades of blonde, but when you ask some one with Platinum Blonde hair or Dirty Blonde hair what color their hair is, they will tell you blonde!
Like Leyna said it really all depends on who you ask. They are all beautiful. I just hate that the grays are being turned down because they don't have a cool name to go with them, but thats a whole different topic!!

I would have to add in there the Sunkissed. I have seen some remarkably colored gliders that they lable as Sunkissed and they are definately a different color then the greys or the buttercreams.
Black Beauties are just really dark greys.
Buttercreams are more creamy browns with brown stripes/markings instead of black. Maybe in the Cin family?
And Lions are very unique to me but only when their coloring is extreme. However, are Sunkissed and Lions the same? just different color intensities?
And the WFB and WFG and WFC are all variations of WF. Just different intensities of coloring.
Just love my gliders, don't care about color!

All of my gliders are gray, so I'm certainly not dissing them. I love each of them. The whole color thing is becoming a little confusing. I've seen a leucistic, and of course, blondes, but was wondering about the new terms that have been surfacing lately.

Lions are by far -in my opinion- the coolest... They're like pure gold/orange... But the ones I can think of off the top of my head are
-Squirrel (is this a color? There are squirrel gliders at ThePetGlider) -Lion -Leucistic -Albino -Champagne -Black Beauty -Brown Beauty -Buttercream -White face (blonde, grey, cinnamon, or lion) -Platinum -Mosaic -And the ever-popular Classic Grey
And I have a sugar glider that has like... an unidentified color... I've heard people call it a lion, I heard people call it a buttercream, cinnamon, grey, you name it... I for one think he's a buttercreme that just has cinnamon highlights... But it's really a color I've never seen...

LOL, this thread goes to show you that it is all about who you ask when it comes to sugar glider color variations. Here is my opinion..... *Cinnamon Family - Chocolate/Brown (Some do not recognize as a variation)
- Buttercream
- Lion
- Red Cinnamon
*Gray Family - Blonde/Silver Cream (Some do not recognize as a variation)
- Classic Gray/Standard
- Black Beauty (Some do not recognize as a variation)
*White Variations - Leucistics
- Platinums
- Mosaics (Pinto)
- Champagnes (leucistic gene diluted)
- Calico
*Albino Family *Other Characteristics (these can appear with other color variations) - White Face
- White Tip
- Ring Tail
I am sure I am missing info or could be wrong. I am sure the more breeders begin to use selective breeding in their programs we are bound to see lots more color variations, as well as increased intensity in some of the current variations. Also by selective breeding some of the color variations some don't recognize or that we barely see a difference in, could result in colors that stand out and are easier for all to recognize in time. In theory, any color trait we can selectively breed for could be considered a color variation. We are still in the beginning stages of color breeding sugar gliders, and are just beginning to get a grasp on how some of the genetics work. (Though we still have a long.....long way to go!)

I think I have to agree with BMX. Green, bald, purple, 3-legged, paralysis, etc............I just love them all.

I LOVE THE WAY YOU CLASSIFIED THE COLORS! I think one of the main problems that we (as glider owners)have created for ourselves is not recognizing that there are different variations within a specific color group. Like dark grey's and lighter grey's and dark palamino in horses and light palamino's, etc. (Sorry if my typing is bad, I recently had surgery on my eyes and can barely see ) Anywho, great post!
