Ok, I think I have created a monster. Prince is so spoiled! He is now overgrooming, and is getting on the bald side. The problem, he wants to be help ALL the time. I had started putting him in his cage for very short periods of time, starting at about 5 minutes and now for a few hours a day. He has toys and will run in his wheel for just a few minutes. He plays and he climbs and then he starts to and hiss for us. He is only in the cage about 2 hours a night, from 4 am to 6 am when I get up and get him out. We have been feeding and caring for him since he was about an hour out of pouch and now he is over a month old. He is growing slowly and is now 32 grams. He will eat off a spoon for me, but not for my husband, who has to still feed him with the syringe. Does anyone have any ideas about how I can help him stop the over grooming. He is so sweet but looks just like a gremlin. I will ge a picture of him later today, so you can see how gremlinish he is. Angie

AWWWW poor little one. sounds like he is the perfect little boy for someone that wants a constant companion. Have you tried putting him with any other gliders? Perhaps some youngsters? I just don't know what else to even suggest. I've never heard of one so young over grooming.

Well I have never had this problem before. He only seems to overgroom when he is alone or closed in the pouch. He loves to sit our hands and he does fine. He will push his head up against our fingers and go to sleep. Put him in the pouch or cage and he is awake and grooming again, take him out and he stops. I don't have anyone to put him with. I wish I had someone but he is so little and even if I can get him a freind it will have to be a little over a month to get someone his age. I guess the little stinker has trained us well... Angie

I had the same problem with a joey I hand raised. Lucy for me, I have a very friendly neutered male that I could put in with him. It solved the problem pretty quickly, but the joey was afraid of the other glider at first. I think it took him a while to realize that he wasn't a person, but a glider as well...
Here is a picture of my little Prince Angie
This is how my little Prince likes to sleep, all the time. Angie
Oh Angie... I dont know what to do to help, other than whats been mentioned already. But I had to say.... he is one handsome little guy and sure does have you guys wrapped around his little opposable thumbs!
I agree with Teresa, I think you guys are just too good at this. Spoiled rotten to the core little thumb monkey!
Angie, Prince has been in our prayers. Little stinker! I got to hold the little darling when we were in Dallas to get our boys neutered and he is a doll baby for sure! I hope someone comes up with a solution for you. You are such a terrific glider mommy, I have to agree with Dancing maybe you are TOO good at it. He definately thinks he is a person not a glider. Sending hugs to Prince and lots of prayers that the little sweety gets better.

It's a total longshot, but how about putting him in with one of those "Teeny Beany" babies? Something he can cuddle with? Baby D loves to curl up with this little duck finger puppet I got from Starbucks, & the twins still drag their Happy Meal Beanie Bears in the nesting box with them (after a YEAR). You can get him started with it by holding it in your hand while you hold him, & he'll curl up & sleep with it. Since it's stuffed, it'll retain body heat, & he'll feel like he has a pal .

He has a little tiger that he loves. He also loves his little wagon, its like 2 inches long and he pushes it all over the cage. He even sits in it, of course when I get the camera he jumps out, hissing at me when he sees me at the cage. I will put in somemore beanie babies. I told my hubby I may start looking for a freind for him and he just started laughing, and saying we have 60, 60! I mean its just one more right??? We don't have any his age and most of the males here are neutered so babies are in short supply. Angie

Angie, he is precious . Tell hubby hi for me too . I like hipbchick's idea, hopefully that will help a little bit. But, I just have to tell you this story, which is pessimistic of me . Ms. Deja and I bonded immediately, and she was with me most of the time....when I would put her back in her cage, she would just sit, look at me, with ears drooped low for the longest time. So sad! But I had to do it sometimes . (She was almost 8wks. when I got her too). Solution, get her a buddy right? Do you know, to this day 2.5yrs later, she is still mad at me for that? Honestly. She is also extremely jealous if Vu comes anywhere near me. I truly believe Deja in particular might be better off as a lone glider . I guess my point is, even down the road he could be a lil stinker. Another story...Peggy (Pegscritters) had a rejected joey Baby Bear. Pics of him at the Rock Falls SGGA...absolutely precious this boy. Once he grew up a little, and had to be alone more often (she had a huge rescue), he would pitbull bite her every time she came near him! Lil stinkers!!! Took her forever to figure this one out too...he would NOT share a cage with a female. It HAD to be another male. It was almost if he held a grudge against her. Another...look at Riker...isn't their behavior strange sometimes? Karin

There are several reasons why a joey overgrooms or has loss of hair. One is that they are stressed about not being in the family unit. They also can be in too humid conditions - Down in a bra in the summer which can cause the skin to itch. They need good circulation of the skin so that it can breathe also. Babies that are about 7 weeks old and graduate to the big cage from the bra or incubator have more fresh air to their skin and for some reason the hair grows back at that time. Also, their body is processing the foods throughout their bodies and there is no backup (bloated tummy) which can sometimes be the case on Baby BML fed babies. When there is a backup, they don't process the nutrients through their body and hair is lost. Once they are old enough to actually digest the BML which I believe is a little later (around 5-6 weeks depending on the joey), the tummy is no longer bloating and the hair grows back in. So what I am saying is that good air circulation and a good pass through of nutrients through their systems help prevent hair loss.
