In January, Cerulean had a seizure (see this thread: http://www.glidercentral.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Board=5&Number=458201&Searchpage=1&Main=44863&Words=Cerulean+princessmegi&topic=0&Search=true#Post458201 ) and we assumed that it was caused by low blood sugar because all of her tests came back clean. Tonight she had another mild seizure. Again, it was very mild and only lasted 30 seconds. She was slightly dazed for a moment and then acted very spastic and bounced around. She was very cautious with me, SweetPea (her cagemate) and even her pouches and toys when I put them back in their cage. She acted as if her vision was off and would jump back from things. Within 5 minutes she was completely back to normal again. It seems that her seizures were not caused by low blood sugar, but possibly by epilepsy. I am going to call Dr. Tristen tomorrow to see if he has any thoughts. After talking with Queenduck, the seizures are most likely petit mal seizures.

My main reason for posting is to document this, as I don't know of any other cases of epilepsy in gliders. If anyone does know of any cases, please let me know.

Have there been any cases of multiple seizures that went undiagnosed, and the tests came back clean?

If Im not mistaken, Tom had a glider that had seizures. They had it on meds. Ollie I think it was. I may be wrong though. Hopefully KarenE, Miss Ellen, or Eddie will come along and be able to help me out here.

Leyna I think also had a glider that had issues.

Yes, one of Tom's gliders did have seizures but I'm not positive it was Ollie as Ollie had other problems as well. You might check with Mary H because she knows the history of Ollie.

Dakota has had two seizures, but it is usually after a lot of excitement (i.e. running around and not wanting to be caught).

The vet figures that because of the sudden increase in activity, it is probably blood sugar related.

Kind of off_topic but I have a dog that has had several seizures and his tests always come back normal. They aren't sure if it is hypoglycemia causing the seizures, or something else causing the seizures which in turn causes hypoglycemia. (That is two of their best guesses shakehead ).

They said short of him being in a harness (monitoring HR, BP, etc., etc. ) when he has a seizure we will most likely never know why he has them. So I keep Karo syrup around for Pogo and Lactated Ringers Solution around for Dakota. dunno

After talking with Alicia, I don't think it is related to blood sugar because she wasn't really jumping around much. She was sitting on/exploring the new toy, and then hopped to my arm and had been going up and down it and grooming me and sniffing my ear. Then she started licking/sniffing my hoodie and seized. There weren't any tremors with this seizure, more of a loss of control/slouched posture. Right after she was blinking like crazy. My hoodie hasn't been near any chemicals or anything like that. Also, she snapped out of it on her own without my giving pedialyte or anything. I was still in the process of getting out of the tent and getting SweetPea into their cage so I could leave the glider room safely.

Does anyone have a current email for Mary? The one on their site isn't going through.

That's what Dakota's seizures sound like as well. As I said, we don't know what is causing them, it's just a guess. dunno But he doesn't have tremors either. He has had fluid drip from his nose twice and he is disoriented and looks like he is moving in slow motion. He probably doesn't need the fluids, but I feel better knowing that he has them.

I'll be interested to see what you find out, keep us in the loop. smile

Can you give me anymore info on the lactated ringers?

It has electrolytes and is more supportive (I think) than plain saline. It has sodium, potassium, calcium, chloride, and lactate. A lot of vets only carry it in liter bags, but some carry smaller (I get 250ml bags).

It has Lactate in the solution which changes the PH in the body by acting as a buffer when metabolized to bicarbonate in the liver which helps correct Acidosis which is a chemical imbalance that occurs with acute fluid loss or renal failure.

Because of the Seizures... I suggest you take your glider in to see Dr. Teresa Bradley in Belton, MO. Let her run some tests first to give you a more definative Dx. Clinic's name is Belton Animal Hospital. Bradley is listed in the vet links here on Glider Central.

Megi, do NOT try to give fluids while she is seizing. Wait until the seizure passes. Doing so during a seizure could cause her to asperate.

Megi, I had little Smegal, who had seizures on and off for about 2 years. They were 'stimulation seizures' and usually occurred when when he got excited or startled. We believe that he had a tumor putting pressure on his brain that caused him to seize when excited... Eventually, I had to have Smegal put to sleep because his poor little body was just wrought with tumors and his quality of life was fading frown I let him go before he started to suffer.

When Smegal would have seizures, I would wrap him in a soft blanket and just hold him until it was over. Many times, they would exhaust him and he would just fall asleep shortly afterwards. We tried various medications for seizures, but ended up just using a little Valium to bring the confusions under control if the seizure was bad, because nothing else worked

Smegal was old and filled with tumors though. I know he was at least 9 when I put him to sleep because I had him for 3 years and the guy that had him before me had him for 6 years...

If there any chance that Cerulean might have bumped her head at some point in time? Some times brain injuries can remain until something comes along to aggravate it. My first thought with such a young glider would be brain injuries, but tumors are also a possibility. I definitely think that an x-ray wouldn't be a bad idea.

With Cerulean's seizures, it's hard to explain. It starts for a second or two of her just looking "off" and a little weak and shaky. Not tremors really (although there were minor tremors with the first seizure), just a little unbalanced. Then she just slumps and loses control of posture. She also blinked repeatedly while coming out of it. Directly after the seizure, when she snapped out of it, she went into spaz mode and flew all over the tent. Any movement would send her flying again. The actual seizure happened while she was very calm and mellow. She was just sitting on my arm. She hadn't been in the tent for 5 minutes yet, and had only walked on the new toy. She hadn't really played or had any activity that might trigger a seizure.

As far as the injury, it's possible, but I only have 4 gliders and all are checked out on a daily basis. It's possible that something happened and went unnoticed because I didn't actually see it happen and there were no outward signs, but I would think with an injury severe enough to cause seizures that there would be at least some sort of bump where she hit her head or some outward sign.
