I'm so glad that you found him. How scary it must have been for you. Becki is right, you need to get as much water as you can off of him and keep him warm and out of drafts until he is completely dry. Even if your glider shows no signs of having aspirated water, he still needs to see a vet as soon as possible. Regardless of how well you clean, toilets contain bacteria or chemicals that could harm your baby and he will need to be put on a round of antibiotics to counteract them.

Hey guys, Thank you so much for all of your help. We dried her off as much as we could and have her in a bunch of towels over a heating pad. She seems to be doing well. We don't hear anything abnormal in her breathing and she is starting to eat. I am so glad we found her in time b/c I don't think we would have been able to handle losing one. Now that we're past the first scary stage, I have a few more questions. 1) Is it possible to feed her too much right now? She is starting to eat like crazy. We're giving her ~5 min breaks in between 2-3 fingers of BML or yogurt. 2) She is very close to her brother and we put him back in the cage. We think it might comfort her to have him near her, but we also think that maybe we should keep them seperated until she's seen the vet and has been on antibiotics.

I'm so glad you found her in time this morning! I'm also glad you called me To answer your questions, it's good that she's eating now. Don't worry about how much she wants to eat - just let her eat her fill. Since you don't know when she got out of her cage, she may not have gotten much to eat during the night so may be quite hungry at this point. You can put her brother in the bonding pouch with her and carry both of them with you today. Just make sure the vet knows you did so and bring them both with you tomorrow. Don't hesitate to call me back if you have further questions

I agree with Suz. You need to carry your baby on you today. There is nothing that replaces body warmth. There is something comforting and healing about the combination of body heat, heart beat, the rhythm of breathing, and the sound of your voice (especially for highly communal animals like sugar gliders). I'm new with sugar babies but I've had a little experience with other animals and done research on different things here and there regarding animals and humans alike. That physical contact is much better than heating pads, etc. And it's not just about exposure to the cold and wet but also the trauma/stress. Your sugar baby needs plenty plenty comfort now. The combo of her brother and you will help quite a bit.
I know it must have been very frightening for her and you. I struggled just to read about it. Good luck with your babies.

Suz, Thank you so much for all of your help this morning. We were able to get Gizmo in to a vet around 9 this morning and they prescribed Enrofloxacin for 7 days (antibiotic) and Meloxicam for 4 days (pain relief). She does have a wet sneeze that really worries me, but the vet said that she looked really good and should be fine. My husband has had her and her brother in the pouch on him all day. I had to work from 12-3 and it was soooo hard to leave them even though I knew they were in good hands. We've given her the meds with a little bit of yogurt and she's eaten some BML and 3 mealworms-yay! Neither of us can even bear to think of this morning b/c it all seems like a huge nightmare and just makes me feel aweful. I am so glad you were there to help and Gizmo is doing well. Hopefully the antibiotics kick in and she stops sneezing b/c it crushes me every time I hear it:o( ~Aimee and Steve~ Gizmo and Pan

I am sorry to hear about your little baby. Kudos to you for taking her in as quickly as you did to see a vet and get medications. The antibiotic should start to kick in here within the next day. Just continue to 'keep her warm' and make sure she is getting plenty of fluids. Sending your little one lots of prayers.

I;m glad you got there in time!!
If you are interested, there are some things to help avoid this in the future. ONE is to but a rectangle of hardware cloth in your toilet bowl and it works like a latter so they can climb out if they fall in.
Thers also a cute little poster to put on the back of your toilet that reminds people to put the lid down for the sugar glider's sake

I could not even imagine finding one of my babies in the toilet. Ogh. It was bad enough when Willow got out and was missing. I was so scared one of my kitties would hurt her...luckilly she was safe and sound when we found her. I have my BF trained well in putting the seat down...he rarely forgets. It satred out with the kitties...cause I do not want them drinking tha water we dispose of our bodily waste in...ewww. So glad you found your baby in time though and that she will be ok. I can imagine how scary that must have been for you both!

FYI...whoever has pics of a toilet ladder and the toilet sign...it would be stellar if you could start a new thread and repost them. I just looked up the post I had seen with them originally but the links all are busted and do not take you anywhere. But it would be a great new thread to make and possibly made into a sticky.

Aimee & Steve, Glad I could help The antibiotic will kick in within 24 hours, as Linda said, and the pain med will help ease her breathing/sneezing. So glad it all worked out well...
FYI to everyone else, normally Aimee & Steve do close the lids on the toilets, but this was the one time that it got forgotten - Murphy's Law always seems to have the last word
Also, the toilet sticker reminder is something that I came up with in conjunction with Chris/glidrz5. It is available on my Cafe Press store... Toilet Sticker

Thanks Suz, The toilet sticker is great and we're def. going to get one for each of our toilets. We're now trying to decide if it's o.k. to take Gizmo off of her antibiotics. We're having a hard time giving her the meds. It's been 4 days and she's getting smart pretty quick. We've put it on mealworms, mixed w/ yogurt and mixed w/ honey. I think she can just smell it at this point and wants nothing to do with it. She's to the point where she holds her mouth shut extremely tight and I don't want to be too forceful with her. She's never been a biter, and she's starting to bite - hard! just when she is being confined for meds or put back in her cage. She has not had any symptoms for 3 days now. Do you think it's o.k. to stop giving the antibiotics? I just feel really bad constraining her and I don't want to make her an angry glider b/c she's usually very sweet. Aimee

Don't take the glider (or anyone else for that matter) off of antibiotics early. It is partly that which is creating "antibiotic resistant" bacteria around the world! What you are in effect doing is letting the bacteria have a "taste" of the antibiotic - kind of like we get with vaccinations!

Continue the antibiotics for the full time prescribed by the doctor. Although she's mad at you for them, it really is for her own good and she does need them even though she seems fine. Try wrapping her in a handtowel so that just her head is exposed. Then, keeping your hand on the outside of the towel, hold her head still with one hand and use the syringe in the other hand to pry open her mouth. Once open, pop the meds in, then rub her nose with the tip of your finger until she licks - then you'll know she's swallowed the meds! HTH
