Hello. Everyone. I've not been here too long, but I've been reading everything here like crazy!! I was wondering tho, does anyone have any ideas on keeping the walls from becoming an abstract food mess? I don't know what to put up, besides a huge tarp nailed to the wall lol. What does everyone else do to keep it cleaner? What to do?? Help! lol. Of course its not an emergency--maybe I should let the lil' gremlins loose on all my walls, so they'll all match!! lol Also, do gliders just go to the bathroom wherever? Do they go in their pouches?! I will have aspen bedding at the bottom of my cage, and it has a divider-like thing to keep them off the bottom floor....just wondering. I think i should have baby wipes on hand just in case. lol thanks.

Sometimes they go in their pouches, but most of the time they go potty right after they wake up, so a lot of the time they are playing when they go potty. You could buy a cage cover to fit your cage from a few vendors http://www.freewebs.com/mkmjmjm/stuffisell.htm (at the very bottom). Or some people just put up a curtain on the wall, but i would think that to be a little harder to do.

I just hooked a clear plastic shower liner on the back of the cage and if anything gets on the wall, babywipes are a big help.

I have a sheet behind the cages so all I have to do is wash the sheet every now and then and the walls don't get destroyed, lol!

Some of our cages have sheets behind them and others have sheets of plastic pinned to the wall and on the floor underneath the cages.

If you use a sheet, make sure they can't pull it into the cage, or they could get their nails caught on it.

I have fabric shower curains stapled to the wall. We wash them when they get dirty. Do you use a glider kitchen? That cuts down on 80% of the mess.

I don't have any gliders yet---just getting ready Sorry, what's a glider kitchen? I'm thinking of getting a custom made cover for the cage. Hmmm....that glider kitchen sounds nice if it cuts down on the mess. lol

Oh I love my glider kitchen. So far I haven't seen a mess with their food only in there. It is a rubbermaid container about shoebox size flipped upside down with a hole on the side for them to go in. I will post a pic of mine tomorrow from work. I love it and wouldn't do without it. Mine was already set up when I brought my babies home two weeks ago and they learned the food was in there. Mine fits 3 small bowls exactly. I also hung a sheet of plexiglass on the back of the cage, but so far haven't had to clean it yet.

Others have posted about using the press and seal plastic wrap on the walls. When it gets messy they just take it down and throw it away then put up more. I use plastic shower curtains. They come in all differen colors and designs so makes things festive.

I used a Ziploc container and cut a hole in it as a door and they just go in and out at their leisure.

glider kitchen makes cage cleaning much easier!

but as to the walls- I have pieces of polar fleece attached to the back 2 walls of the cage - 2 sets so I can take one down and wash it as needed! its been the best concept for clean up...

Is that aspen bedding wood shavings? My understanding is that is not a good idea if it is. What do others think

Hmmmm... I'm no pro, but I think the pine and cedar shavings are the bad ones?? I'm gonna use puppy pads, they aren't too expensive. I just thought that shavings would be too much a mess to change all the time. I might try them out (Kaytee Aspen Bedding) if they work better on keeping down the smell. I haven't heard anything about aspen shavings being bad....maybe if the gliders are right in them they could get dust in their lungs and nose?? Sorry I dunno.

We have a large piece of acetate hanging behind the cage on the wall with 3M sticky tape. The acetate is just a thin (cheap) piece of plastic and it almost looks like nothing is there (you can get in the fabric section of Wal-Mart on a large roll...they will cut whatever size you need). When there is food on it we just take a wet paper towel and wipe it off. It works really well and is hardly noticeable.

You xould just use a piece of fleece cut to fit the tray or paper towels. They're probably the easiest thing to change.

Pine shavings are a no-no. Pine when wet gives off a toxic oil that can cause respitory problems. Aspen shavings are safe but it is such a mess. Puppy pads, paper towels, fleece "carpets" all work great. Fleece is wonderful in that it can be washed and reused over and over.

If memory serves there was a link posted one time that told what woods were ok to use in the cages and which ones were not. Does anyone else remember this and/or remember the link?Just wondering cant find it and my parents have many different types of trees and they are wanting certain one cut down because they have died and i was needing to find out if I can use branches or other parts in a cage. Also My father-in -law is a cabinet maker he workes with many hardwoods, when he planes the wood for doors and such the planings are perfect for the dropping pan of the cage but I need to know which ones give off the toxic oils. so I don't use them so far I have had no problems with oak planings. Anyone have any thoughts on this??????

There are 5 great sticky posts (with the yellow thumb tack) at the top of the Housing and Accesories forum. These are great threads with all sorts of helpful information, including toxic/safe plants/branches for gliders.

I figured I should add my two cents...I have had the indoor/outdoor carpeting as the "liner" for the bottom of the cages...problems w/ that are that a)some of my fuzzbutts think it's meant to be "hole-y", b) it's a pain in the [censored] to clean if you have tons of food on it...smelly urine too if you don't take it up right away, c) it is a "magic" carpet...now you see your glider, now ya don't! Mine all love to hide under it! I went to Lowe's the other day and I got free linoleum samples...I figure they'll be easier to deal with than the I/O carpet and the solid wood floor of the cages...Also...about protecting the walls and carpeting...I put down one of those plastic "heavy traffic" protectors...you know...the ones with the nubs all over the bottom to grip into the carpet...I also bought some made for hardwood floors and staple-gunned them to the wall...they're clear so not an eyesore and you can easily tell where they've splattered and you can wipe them down with some water and a cloth. It's inexpensive too..I hope someone found this helpful lol!

Danielle- from your post there is a big difference in yourcage and ours.. the fleece I put under their cage- not in it.. their cage is 5" off the floor on legs, with a bottom of the same coated hardware cloth as the sides, I just use the fleece to catch what falls through... and I steam clean the bottom of the cage on a weekly basis along with the walls and sides..
