I have a pre-adoption application that asks for (among a whole lot more) their vet reference if they have one as well as landlord info if they're a renter, and then a contract as well. I like to talk to someone a lot before I will let a joey go home with them. I will also read over posts on GC if they're a member here, especially if they have other gliders, to get a picture of what kind of slave that person is.

I think the best way to determine whether somebody would make a good owner is to talk to them... I've met many people that outwardly seem like good potential owners, but after talking to them, I've realized that gliders probably aren't the pets for them. It goes both ways though...

I've used the application from all4gliders. *sorry* probably shouldn't admit that. But - it includes vet references and some pretty difficult questions. Then, talking to them. But I've only rehomed one set of gliders. AND, that was only a few weeks ago.

We usually spend a lot of time talking back and forth however the value of previous posts (either here or elsewhere) cannot be underestimated

I refuse to let any gliders leave my home unless I'm totally comfortable w/the adopter. And THAT is key! It's easier said than done to deny someone, but it has to be done and you have to be prepared to do it. I am also a firm believer in taking the gliders to their new homes rather than allowing them to be picked up (when feasible, of course). I rehomed a pair once to a woman that seemed ideal on the phone, but after seeing the setup and care of her current pair, I all but FLED the scene, suggies in tow! Had I allowed her to pick them up, I never would have known! I think an ideal home will understand your hesitance. The home I ended up finding for them was PERFECT. I wanted to drop them off, meet the family (pets included), see the house/environment, chat, etc. and they were not only comfortable but welcoming with that! I would be the same way if someone was rehoming their pet to me - I would completely understand any questioning or hesitation. I also required them, as I would with any other rescues that may enter my door, to be returned to ME should they be rehomed again. In 2 months, in 5 years, whatever. They do not need to be bounced around any further. I love the idea of reading GC to check up on them - furthermore, I think it's a good idea to just google the person's name and phone number. See if any random CL postings come up or anything like that. (OT - if you search w/in quotes, it will search for that phrase, not the words individually. So you'll want to search for "Jon Smith" not Jon Smith.) I think it's VERY important to have some sort of "test" like the questionair A4G uses. It's also a good idea to ask what pets they've had in their life and where they are now. Also ask how they feel about breeding. Rescues should NEVER be bred, but of course I'm sure people will lie about their intentions - or change their mind. It's good to know where a person stands on breeding animals in general, IMO. That's what comes to mind for now - HTH!

I do all of that, that the others have mentioned. My questions have derived from Lucky You Gliders application, since I had once upon a time been screened by her myself. I thought I had been doing a good job of finding good homes until recently! I worked with a friend of mine, taught her all about suggie care, gave her print outs with web links to all the info she would ever need to get info or help for them, went to her house and supervised play time ahead of time, set up her cage myself. I gave her a wodent wheel and a complete cage set that I had made and everything. I admit she takes good care of them and plays with them as she should, but a couple of days ago she told me something that made me feel sick to my stomach! She told me that once they began to have babies she would most likely be selling the babies either to or thru the local Petco. She said something about having discussed some kind of contract with them. I explained why selling in a pet store is bad even though I had talked about such things in the past with her, about the best places to get a suggie from and why. She didn't seem swayed. Now I wish I had never allowed her to get them. If she does do that, I will be first in line to file complaints with petco, hand out brochures to everyone that comes in there, anything I can do. Technically, she still owes me for the male, it may destroy what friendship we have left, but I am seriously considering a REPO.
