I heard that it's normal for the joey to hang out of the pouch while momma is resting. I get so worried that Ayla does this with her 7 week IP joey. It makes me nervous that she moves around with him hanging out like that. Is there an increased risk of the joey detaching with them doining this? Is there any thing I could do to prevent it? This is my first joey and I am very nervous!
I believe that it is normal for them to be a bit out and still attached. I don't think, I don't know, but I don't think, there is an increased risk of being detached. Congratulations on your new ones!

I just had 2 joeys come OOP. Their mom did this with them for at least the last week of them being IP. Every time I checked on mom, there was always at least one of the joeys hanging part way out - sometimes just a foot or tail but sometimes more. She was running in the wheel and jumping all over the cage like this. Both joeys are doing just great and no one detached too early. I think this is pretty normal for gliders, so I wouldn't worry <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />.

My glider did the same thing. I was so nervous I took the wheel out and put fleece all over the bottom of the cage thinking if the baby fell all the way out it wouldnt get hurt, but I think the joey is close to the place where it can get on and off the nipple ok. I read that when they are very little they dont have a fully developed lower jaw and would have trouble if they detached from the nipple. Im attaching a photo of Savannah with joey in pouch and the joeys foot and tail are out. Poor girl was so big there wasnt enough room for the joey so poor joeys parts would hang out like you said and we held the joeys hand and feet when they were out. It helped in bonding. The joey was never nervous around us at all and calls for us to hold her all the time now. I am making an album of the birth, the In pouch pictures and Diva growing OOP.
