Hola, I have some oh so wonderful questions on superworms...
-Do they turn into beetles?
-how long does it take?
-what do they look like?
-Is it okay to feed superworms as your sole protein source(in the BML diet)
Thanks!

which ones are the super worms? We got mealies at our pet store (same one we always use) and these are just ..UGH! They are aggressive with eachother and fight..it's gross! I made hubby cut off the heads cause they scared me after chewing out of the plastic container! *shiver*

actually they don't turn into beetles, you don't have to refriderate them either. i have had a superworm farm for over a month and all they doo is get bigger. I FULLY suggest them! Not having to refridge them is the BEST thing ever! My babies love them, peanut eats them whole, while teddy just eats out their insides (they have a crunchy exoskeleton which some picky eaters don't like) I do feed them along with leadbeaters diet, so they aren't their only protein source
-WE LOVE THEM!!

what in the world can chew through the plastic container!? that IS gross! superworms don't do that, and they don't fight each other. they can bite (my babies eat the heads first to keep them from biting) but they haven't bitten me before, but they can squirm away from you pretty fast since they have legs

My gliders LOVE them. My superworms have never changed and I like that i hate beetles. I have been told that they only turn to beetles if you separtated them ..(not sure if that true)But they live forever, my mealies died and turned to beetle real quick, so i prefer SUPERWORMS.

The pet store calls them the "jumbo" mealies. They said they are not the super worms. They are alot bigger than the ones we always get from them. (much longer and fatter) I was like, what did you feed these things? They are really grossing me out BAD!! I got tired of them fighting on top of the stuff they put them in, so I shook the container...they all dove straight down and the noise they made sounded like soda fizz! Ewwww!

Sorry if this comment duplicated...I had some trouble submitting...anyhow...

Every story that I hear about superworms gets more bizarre and grotesque. These things have gotton to be an urban legend, er, glider legend. Even the clerk at my local pet store told me they were rotten things that bit you and fought with other superworms. She expanded a bit more and said that she "knew someone, who knew someone" that had a given her pet superworms. The pet did not bite the head off and the superworm chewed through the pet's stomach! Now that's scary stuff! Of course, I think that's a tall tale. I was when she told me. But what are the real facts? I would love to see some consistency. At this point, I'm thinking that they are rather like vampires and the bite of a superworm could turn our precious furballs into a loathsome superworm! Yikes!
After just 4 hours sleep last night, I'm rather rammy, so pardon my sense of humor. Would somebody else share a superworm experience with me? What would happen if a superworm bit your glider? Is it safe to feed them?

Utterly and completely grossed out and frightened in Delaware,

My guys LOVE their superworms. They usually eat the insides and throw the exoskeleton and the head away. I don't think they really bite, but they can pinch, so the gliders usually hold them near the head or bite the head off first so they don't get pinched. I have had a few (very very few) turn into beetles on me. If you separate them and place them in a photo container they will morph into larva more quickly. But for the most part mine don't change they just keep growing until eaten (by each other or by the gliders).

I was reading about how the superworms can eat thru the intestines in lizards, iguanas, etc. (reptiles) The reason that can happen is because is because they swallow them whole. YUCK!!! Well, anyway, I got scared after reading about that and THEN after I ended up with these "creeps" *shiver* I've been having hubby snip off the heads (which are kinda hard to do..GROSS) before giving them to the "kids" I've been sick to my stomach for a couple days over this and can hardly eat! I will never get these things again this big! ewwwwww

You think that was bad......when my Sassy was sick and couldn't chew his wormies (because he didn't have more than 5 teeth in his mouth towards the end) I would not only cut the heads off so they wouldn't wiggle for him, but I'd also slit them open so he would still be able to enjoy his wormies. That was disgusting. (shudders) The things we will do for our children. I won't touch the things without tweezers, but here I was holding the bug with tweezers and performing surgery on them with an exacto knife. Just so my guy could have his yummys. I also did this with his waxies so he could eat those too, but sometimes he'd get impaitent there and try to eat them before their "surgery". He didn't have alot of luck with this, but he tried bless his heart.

They DO turn into beetles, are you KIDDING me?!?!?! Eww!!!
The reason they dont turn into beetles for most people is because they dont turn into beetles until they're fully grown... Most people buy them when they're fairly young, and feed them all before they grow up

ok, i want to set the record straight, this is a direct copy of explanation of Superworms found on www.superwormfarm.com:

The Superworm, classification Zophobas Morio, is the larvae of a beetle many times the size of the Mealworm's Darkling Beetle. Superworms grow naturally, over a period of many months, to the 2 inch size sold by most insect suppliers. The complete life cycle of the Superworm can be 6 months or longer.

I had them and honestly they creep me out. I actually love to run my fingers through the mealworms (large or giants). It feels cool. I've only had 2 beetles come out of them and then they died without having babies. I've heard things about them biting but honestly I just left them alone so I don't know if they do.

peanutandteddy, YES they Do chew through the plastic. ALL mealies do. Supers are particularly viscious and yes they DO fight one another.

glidrz5, yes they do bite. I have a small scar on my right arm and about four witnesses to the fact that supers bite and it is Not pleasant in the least.

Mealies of all sizes are omnivires. they will eat fruits and veggies and.. washcloths/papertowels/whetever but they ARE meat eaters. As I mentioned before in another mealworm post, they are used to strip skeletons of any meat and or tendon tissue. It's not a joke. Supers are the most capable since they do it faster but even the "mega" mealies can do it fairly rapidly. The only case of a human having a mealworm or bug of similar sort, eat through the stomach is Donny Osmond (I think it was him) ate some bug on fear factor and didn't bother to crubch the head before swallowing. Big mistake that ended him in the hospital. With my group, all of them bite the head before chowing down. I watch each one to make sure though. I know Moose got bit o n the paw once by one and that's the last time he failed to make the crushing bite first.

All of my info aside from the Osmond bit is first hand. I have a superworm farm and though they DO smell a bit stronger than megas, it's not enough to change my mind. I also have a mega mealie farm and a "large" mealie farm which has been brewing for a long while now. On top of that, I keep crickets. SO.. lots of bugs. Lots of first hand experience. However, if you feed Any mealies to any other critters, snip the head first. They WILL do internal damage.

I bought 2 dozen super worms for my kids once. Nina loved them but Nicky didn`t. I never knew they could bite when I bought them and I`m almost beginning to wonder if one may have bit Nicky, maybe that`s why he wouldn`t take any from me. I think he may have taken one from me when I first offered it to him but he threw it down and didn`t want it. I didn`t think anything of it until now. Besides, I decided I wouldn`t ever buy them again being that Nina was the only one to eat them and they stunk soo badly, I didn`t want them in my house lol. I`ll stick with the regular sized mealies. My kids do flips for them too.

They bite and you don't even know it. Little things are really fast. I wouldn't be surprised if nicky was nipped enough to make him shy away.

Ya Zayrah, I have a feeling that may be what happened. It`s just not like Nicky to turn down any kind of bug. If I`d have known that at the time I would took that worm and squished it slowly LOL ....no bug bites my baby lol

I'm completley grossed out right now . I got my first batch of mealies (reg. size) today and they are not my favorite thing. I also have those bamboo tweezers (helps a little but you still have to look at them).
I'm not sure if I even know which end is the head and how do you cut it off... eeuuuwwweee.
I put them in a ziplock tub and put it in our fridge... will they eat their way out of that??? What should I store them in???
I'll be having nightmares tonight about mealworms crawling all over the house.
I had tried feeding the freeze dried and the con 'o worms but suggie didn't care too much for the dead ones.

By the way are you supposed to 'gut load' mealies like you do with crickets, and if so, what do you feed them. I know that you can shake some calcium power on top of them.
