I have a question. How much do you normally put in your drop pan? I'm thinking if starting to use that for odor control (since puppy pads don't do that). Anyways. I was wondering if your babies ever reach through the bars and grab it. Can they get a hold of it and eat it? I'm just concerned about my babies getting adventurous and deciding to try eating it.

Second question. How often do you change the bedding? Every couple days..once a week?

Just trying to get some info on this stuff. I went to their website and it looks like it'd be a great bedding as long as my babies don't try and eat it. Thanks!

That is what I use and it is great. It does help with the odor. I have 15 plus babies and mine have their own building it smells but with the carefresh it smells much better. I have never seen my eating it but it is suppose to be safe for your pets. I put newspaper and then carefresh on top my cages get cleaned once a week that is when I change the liter and wiped down daily.

I think puppy pads are the best for under the pan. The are absorbant, control odor, easy to clean. AND you don't have to worry about mites or anything hatching out of it. On the rat list, they recomend keeping it in the freezer to keep pests from hatching.

Puppy pads do not control odor. At least not the ones that I get. And they are the only oversize ones I can find around here that aren't outrageously expensive.

We use CareFresh, and change the pan once a week. We use enough CareFresh to cover the pan so that none of the metal is showing. Our pan rests about five inches below the base of the cage, so it's far enough away that impish glider paws can't reach. Not that our boys have ever tried; they don't seem interested in their bedding.

We buy the large bags of CareFresh because it's more cost effective, and we go through about one per month, I'm guessing. (I'm at work, so I don't know the exact size of a "large bag," sorry!)

So far as the "odor control debate" is concerned... I think bedding is really a matter of personal preference, just like diet. Buy a smaller bag of CareFresh and give it a whirl. If you don't like it, or don't feel that it works as well as other bedding, then don't use it again.

[:"purple"] Hello ~
I use Carefresh Ultra (white) bedding and find that since I have switched from the reg. Carefresh, the odor is definitely less. I have 3 gliders and the only thing I have noticed is that my little ones tend to grab (through the grids) at the old food fallen from the night before . I would highly recommend the Carefresh Ultra to anyone that can find it. [/]

I use regular Carefresh now, but since I've started working at the pet store and can see how much better the Carefresh Ultra is, I will switch to that.

I usually do a a full clean every week. I have a large cage so once a week is good, and you still can't smell anything. I could go longer since I do little pick-up cleans everyday. (Pick up fallen food, fresh food, etc).

I suggest switching up pouches a few times a week to save on the smell...

[:"green"]I use regular CareFresh & it works quite well. The gliders are totally disinterested in it. They reach through for fallen crickets, mealworms & wax worms but leave the bedding itself alone. I put down puppy pads as a bottom layer to cover the pan bottom (helps make clean-up easier) and then use a 1" thick layer of CareFresh on top. Odors are definitely lower than with puppy pads alone. In regards to pests coming from it - I've never had a problem with pests in the CareFresh bedding when it comes out of the package. I keep the open bag in a large Rubbermaid container to keep it from getting infested once opened. The only time I ever had a problem with pests of any kind is when I tried to use a citrus-peel bedding as a deodorizer on top of the CareFresh bedding - then I ended up with pantry moths. Other than that, it's never been an issue.

I use a cage liner made from three layers of corduroy and fleece. It is thick so it absorbs a lot of stink! I like them because they cut down on waste and money spent because you can just throw them in the washer whenever you want and use them over an over. I get mine from pinsneedles.com . They have animal safe hems, too. She can make them whatever size for cheap. I could never go back to all the mess of shavings.

Rainy, that is a WONDERFUL idea! My fiance and I make every effort to be as environmentally conscious as possible, and we've been having a difficult time using CareFresh because of this, even if it is made from recycled materials that otherwise would have been discarded. We'll have to look into the cage liner you suggested! Thanks for the link!

Your Welcome! My husband and I are also into saving the planet! I hope more people read this post, maybe I'll make a new one for it. I know it sounded like a commercial but they are just so great.
