So I have read threads that have gone back and forth and my question is...

Is it illegal to own a SG at all in PA, or is it illegal to breed or sell SG's in PA?

I was thinkiing about going to grad school in Philly for Clinical Psych. and wanted to know the deal. So realistically, do people still own them in PA and just keep quiet about it? What do people who have to move to PA do because I could not even so much as fathom giving up Gizmo for any reason, least of all the stupid game commission. He's a huge part of me and I could not part with him. I've had him for over 2 years and he's my baby! I noticed there was a vet listed in Philly in the database, so I'm thinking there has to be glider owners in PA, yes?

Furthermore, he's a rescue to begin with and EASILY stressed out by ANY change, so I would think a change in owner would severely traumatize him. I don't know where to go with this, the program I want (Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine) is in PA, but there is NO way AT ALL I would give Gizzy up. Based on everyone's experience, what do people in these situations do?

PA is a very dangerous state to own a glider. They are illegal and they WILL come take them (they do not give a grace period to find them a home normally if they find out. The risk of the being pts is very high.) I would not risk it in PA.

That is a good idea. I just don't get the whole idea behind the illegal thing. Doesn't the PA Game Commission have bigger fish to fry than domestic sugar gliders, who are kept in a cage and don't pose a serious risk to others? Aren't there people shooting domestic animals or poachers, which to me need more attention than my Gizmo for example? This whole thing is ridiculous.

I know of a large "underground" glider community in and around Pittsburgh. The 3 veterinarians listed in Pittsburgh will all see gliders as well. Although you may think that is suspicious, they wont share your info with the PA game commission or anything like that. While the game commission does claim they are illegal to own in PA, it comes down to the individual wardens as to what type of treatment you will get for being "caught." The few owners I know of here who have been "caught" merely received a couple hundred dollar fine and were assisted in rehoming/removing their gliders from the state. In other areas of the state I've heard of immediate confiscation. Due to related cases of the PA Game Commission inhumanely treating confiscated "exotic" animals, there are many legal precedents for fighting the confiscations.

That all said, your best bet is not to bring your gliders to Pennsylvania. You run the risk of either confiscation and a legal proceeding, or simply a fine and having to rehome your gliders or move. *IF* you feel you want to take the risk, you have to be very careful about who you let know about your gliders. If you are leasing, you likely would not want to tell your landlord what they are. Basically, I highly suggest you don't bring Gizmo to PA. But, if you cant help it, be extra careful.

Can I ask what the justification is, according to the Game Commission, for gliders being illegal? Why are they considered such a threat in the state? Gizmo is a single glider and is neutered, so I'm not breeding him, nor would I be selling him, obviously. I'm just trying to understand the logic. Thanks to you all by the way for your help so far.
