Hello All.

Alot of people may not be familiar with me, but I've been around here for a little while now. I mostly read and only contribute when I think I can add to the knowledge on this wonderful forum.

I've been doing all the researching I can on the background on how this gene or trait is passed on. From what I can tell there are instances where it seems randomly passed (ie: from two gliders w/o WT's who seem to carry the gene) or also produced from one or two gliders with WT's. Sometimes I've seen as well where "hets" with parents with WT's "prove" out and produce offspring with WT's.

All very random. There also seem to be pairs who produce only a couple WT's and then there are those who produce many.

I wish we could corner this gene or trait and really see how it is passed.

Another thing I was interested in, which seems I've hit a dead end with my research is whether the "hets" produced from the WT parents turn out to produce WT's at all. It sort of seems like there is a slight more likelyhood if there is an actual WT reintroduced, but certainly not a guarantee.

Anyone out there currently working with WT's? I know there are some larger breeders working with them right now. But only a couple. Seems alot have abandonded ship because of the random nature of the whole thing.

Kinue,
An excellent query, but sadly I don't know the answer. Hopefully one of the experienced WT breeders will be along soon to help dunno

Sorry, got no clue really. I have a pair of WTs. Their first set of joeys, twin boys, neither had wts. They currently have twins ip but won't let me peek yet.

Well I've been around looking at all the breeders sites and those with lineages I've been doing alot of researching there. Just based on those alone you can get alot of information.

Selective breeding is a HUGE clue as well.

I think right now as I know it, The Pet Glider has an extensive WT population listed in their pedigree database, but I dont know how many are actively breeding. I know that Pet Sugar Gliders also did some work with WT's (I have one of their hets from a retired pair). I've seen someone in the past I think located in Canada have success with WT's though their name is excaping me at the momment. There are a couple others too having a little success as well, but I can't seem to remember where I've seen them.

Dont see many posting about their work with them, but that certainly doesn't mean they aren't working with them behind the scenes. I sure hope they are. I believe they are my favorites. smile

I seem to be able to follow pretty far back to the wild caught WT's but the offspring born in recent years I cant find anything on. Im curious how they are reproducing. If at all.

I don't really breed for WT's, but I did produce a wf/wt from a wt het. The mother, Princess Paisley, was the twin to a little wt male. It was assumed she might carry the gene, though neither of her parents were WT...and they haven't produced another wt since. Paisley was paired with a classic grey with no history of wt in his lines AT ALL. Their 1st breeding produced 1 wfb/wt het and 1 wf/wt.

So, in this case...the "wt het" proved out to carry the gene. smile

Oh that is good news in deed. The kind I was hoping for in my case, but also shows for sure it is in deed fickle. There are cases like that. Where there are no known WT in the line at all. But then a breeding like that or rather a "proving" like that would prove it is SOMEWHERE.

All traits are carried in the DNA. So they must be passed down. Just not expressed all the time. Did the that joey go on to produce any WT offspring?

My wf/wt has not had any joeys. She is the only wt out of 4 joeys that this pair produced. Her mother, Paisley, I believe is the only wt het out of those parents that has gone on to produce a wt. Her twin brother who was a wt has also not produced any wt as far as I know. It's an odd gene.

Here, this might explain it better than I can as far as the lines in this family go. Lol.

Paisley's Parents (I can't remember their names without pulling my records) - Produced 1 wt male, and his twin was a wf female (my Paisley)

I paired Paisley (wf/wt het) with Jack Daniels (classic grey with no history of wt in his lines AT ALL)

Paisley and Jack produced Sarabi (wf/wt), Mufasa (wf), Kovu (wf), and Kiara (grey)

None of those 4 have gone on to produce at this point.

As far as I know Paisley's parents, nor any of her siblings, have gone on to produce any other wts.

The owner of Paisleys parents is Anita (mysweetgliders.com), and the owner of her wt twin is I believe Melinda from this site, but I could be wrong.

Lynsie, what a beautiful pair they must be! Of the WT hets, have they proven yet? Oh and for curiosity's sake, if so do you know what they were paired with?

Yes they do. My first joey out of a wt female and wf male, produced a wt... in therory a possible wf and wt het.

Anyhow, he has already proved that the gene does pass on, as the first time around he produced a wt joey.

I have a pair of wt's, a pair of wthets, and a mixed pair of a wf/wt with a mosaic. So far, lots of hets here, and 2 wt's produced at my house. I have 1 ip now, it might be a wt too.

The first set of joeys (WT & WF/WT het) are paired with a WF male and they have not produced any joeys yet. The other 2 joeys just came OOP a few days ago.

I have 6 WT's, all of which came from 2 normal colored gliders with no history of WT. I have never produced a WT joey myself, but some of my WT het babies have went on to produce WT babies for their new owners...

Are you talking about Eclipse & Stardust?
I have Eclipse (WT) & Stardust (WF/WT het) and they will be paired with my Comet (WF Champagne) hopefully late summer.
I will be sure to let you know what they produce. thumb

This is all the great kind of information I was hoping to get. My plan is to try and start a HUGE geneology tree for fun of the known WT's and their off spring, and their pairings etc etc.

Of course this isn't science, and I wont claim it to be. But good information I'd like to just look at once its down all together. Should be interesting in the least. If those with WT's, hets, or even greys that produced or proved wanted to email me with their histories to add that would be wonderful!! (matchmakersmagic@hotmail.com)

Also, if anyone has an interesting theory on this gene/trait I would be very interested in sharing. I've also noticed some personality qualities in my het that maybe or maybe not relevent. So any info anyone wanted to share.

Will be interesting to see if my het proves or not. One day I would love to have a WT/WF to add to my little glider family! smile

well i rescued a WT ( not knowing he was until i got him home! ) from an illegal situation , he was fine just in an illegal state..the wildlife people found me & i met them to get him ( i have to say the lady was awesome, she drove 6 hrs & i drove 2 & she was glad to do it..i feel bad for the old owner tho because she lost a glider only because of the law not because he was abused ) so i pet him with a WF het girl the same age as him & they just produced 1 little girl..so far she has no WT & no WF traits...shes only 4 weeks old so she may still come up WT so we will see & i will let u know what happens smile

Dawn it sounds like you have no history on this little wt. While it is a beautiful trait, it's one most wont breed for in a glider with an unknown lineage. Just a heads up smile

Dawn, gliders are born with white tips, they don't develop them. If she didn't have a WT when she was OOP, she's not going to get one...

Kinue-

I've only done casual observing of the trait - not studying as you have done. But I've noticed several instances where it seems to skip a generation. For a while, it seemed to almost always skip! But now more WT joeys are coming from WT parents, rather than from WT grandparents!

It also appears to me that both parents do not need to have WT in the lineage to produce WT hets and joeys.

I would be curious to see if it could be a sex-linked trait.

Maybe we could open another thread and see if there are equal numbers of males and females with white tips, or if it seems more common in one gender...it isn't really following a pattern of classic autosomal recessiveness, but maybe it's sex-linked recessive on the X-chromosome? In this case, moms could pass it to sons or daughters, but dads could only pass it to daughters...it might explain some of the weirdness...

Well, I do seem to see that trend emerging, although at this time I cannot prove or disprove that theory because the beginnings of the trait is "unknown" with many WC (wild caught)gliders and just plain unknown pet shop lineages. And without true "professional" help I’m just plain not certified to make those kinds of claims. However this is just fun for me, making guesses all along.

The skipping is also something I’m working on and something I may have here in my home. As my mommy's mother (WT het) did not seem to produce any actual WT's from what I could tell from my research with her father (WT) (although on a side note, her father has produced WT's with at least one other female who I believe was a het, without looking at my notes), but I’m having trouble tracking my mommy's 1/2 siblings. I’m only looking specifically for 9 right now to try and "prove or disprove" in my mind the skipping thing.

But I know at least one of my joey's has a bright WT. They are still a week or so away from coming oop, but we'll see. There are twins in there.

What I think is most likely at this point in my tree since only a handful maybe a few more of people have been generous enough to "donate" lol their WT's lineage and history I only have so much to work with, and can only piece together so much (AND THANK YOU!!!), but from those who have participated with very detailed information this is what I THINK so far. And this may change mind you! wink

In my pairs case and in many I possibly believe so far is that: MY females MOTHER genetically was unable to donate her WT het gene for my female to "display" the gene, but that both mother and father donated the gene to carry(making my little girl a true het). Her father on the other hand, the full WT, WAS able to (which is why he went on to produce actual WT's with other females). SO my female and possibly some of her 1/2 siblings if paired up with the right mates could produce WTs that DISPLAY the WT trait not only carry it(het).

Maybe thats why my girls mother never produced any WT joey's with my girls father... Maybe she was UNABLE to.

I think this happens alot too in other colors as well. Whenever dealing with hets, but probably with this tricky gene because there is really no obvious marker like "het coloring". I've seen some breeders put up for sale hets after 2-3 years, I wonder now if its because they never produced.

Another theory I’m starting to possibly lean towards is needing more WT bred back into the line to produce more. Seems the lines start to produce more and more "hets" that do NOT produce WT's until another WT is brought back into the line which might ALSO explain the "skipping generations".

It’s hard to tell much more with my limited info. I KNOW THERE MUST BE MORE WT'S OUT THERE wink!!! But that’s what its leaning towards right now. Just having down on paper makes it alot clearer, just like I thought it would!!!

There are also a handful of common names that keep showing up in lineages too that have nothing to do with WT's, but somehow are linked to them.

It’s all VERY interesting!
