Sure you can. But if he is used to his name, then it might be hard for him.

I've changed my gliders names from what they were given by the breeder. I don't think breeders are offended. I think they name them so they have something to call them while they are caring for them and know what baby someone is talking about for sure if they are interested in buying one.
We don't always name our babies that are available but I wouldn't care if someone wanted to change the name I was calling them.

When I kept the name the breeder gave Linus, she expressed surprise! I got the impression it is common for people to change the names the breeders give them.

Others I've gotten from breeders, I've picked out the names before the breeders named them.

I change the names of the rescues that come in here all the time. If they are going to be staying with me forever, I don't even ask the previous owner their name. It is a new life for them when they come to me, so they get a new name too.

I have a friend who breeds birds. When she has a waiting list for a particular type of bird, she asks the would-be parents for a male and a female name for the baby. She then calls it, for example, A/B if the names given were Ali and Bobby. Then, once the bird is sexed, she applies the appropriate name while the bird is still too young to go home. I have often wondered why glider breeders with waiting lists do not do the same thing.

I've changed the names twice and I asked both times.I told them what the new names would be, that way if I happen to post something about them, they would know who I'm talking about.

I have changed the names of the gliders that have come to my home. I have taken in rescues that they have not even bothered to tell us the names, it just never seems important to the old owner.
I feel that if they are in my home I should be able to call them what I want since some people have different preferences.
We for example have sort of a food theme going.

In the same respect I would not be not be offended if someone adopting one o my animals changed the name we gave. It is their pet it should be up to them.
I have only ever had one person ask the name of the animal they are adopting so I would think most people do change the name once they get them home.

I had to change Rodney's name. He was called "CHUNK" and it did not fit him.
I did keep Roxie's original name and as most know I always name Apple's babies after fruits LOL

The only one I ever changed the name on was my first. I called him Grumple until he bonded with me, then switched it to Andre' cause he was so brave.

We did with our babes. Maybe it was just that we where to excited about getting then and afraid the owner would want them back. So we kinda skewed out of there

I had to change the name of my lil girl Harley as her name was anything but appropriate when we got her....it was "Holy F****** Terror" Yeah it had to go.....LOL. And I changed my baby's name from Peanut to Shane.....and 2 of my babies, Prissy and Batman, their breeder parents asked us what we wanted to call them and thats what they called them :0) So we have had good name experiences for the most part.

Yep, Jahdi and Mouse were called Meeko and Chanko, Connor, Ash and Avery were rescues so their names weren't known so I gave them new names, and Davian was called Drake and we renamend him because three of us me (Vicki), Minkasmom (Denise) and Amanda1981 (Amanda) all went in together to rescue him so I wanted a name that had a V, D & A in it for his new name so Denise came up with that name - so he has a special name!

Hi
I changed the names of my 3 girls the day I brought them home. Their previous owner had named them after food ... they were cumquat, mango and kiwi ..... I didn't like it (especially cumquat!)

So, they became Tipi (Tipitaka, meaning 3 jewels), Penny and Scraps.

It took them about a day to figure out that "Okay, so these are the words that mean we get treats now" <LOL>

Quincys original name was Panic...talk about a name that didn't fit him! Same with Jay & Silent Bob...originally they were called Ace & Harley.

I agree with Mac up there...new home, new life, new name!

I've changed a couple of my glider's names.. Simon was Spaz (but I still call him that too, lol) and Amira's name was Sabrina, but I asked Helen if she'd mind me changing it when I put my deposit on her wink I don't think any breeder would get offended if you changed your glider's name, they are after all, your gliders wink Besides, we don't all have the same taste in names, us breeders just don't want to go around calling the joeys "the joeys" lol... we want them to have a name to be called wink

I agree with Becki.....I don't want to call them "joey 1" etc...and we tell every new mommy/daddy to please feel free to change their names....a few of them have, and a few of them haven't.....If their new parents had the name picked out before they left here, we started using that ASAP

When I got two of my gliders from a rehome - I changed their names to Chamille and Kee. My other gliders either kept their names or didn't have ones when they came. smile

This is sooo coooll. cause that is going to be my son's name (when i have one.. not soon though)
I love the name Damian,,, but my husband loves the name Davin...
so we agreed on Davian.... the name needs to start with a D,, since his Family's tradition is to call all the boys with the initials D.A.S.... what a coinkidink.. grin

I call of of our joeys "joey" or "joey girl" that way we don't get quite so attached and the new owners don't have to feel stress about renaming them.
You don't want to cringe for the rest of your baby's life at their name so call them what makes you happy!!! mlove

If i have someone wanting a glider befor it is out of pouch i will ask them what name they want and call it that if i have a glider that is not sold yet i will name just for my records and to have somthing to call them but there new owners are always welcome to change the name it is there baby after all.

Our first glider didn't come with a name. She was a year and a half, when I asked what her name was, the owner said, "Oh they don't answer to their names, they are not like dogs, if you want to name it, name it whatever you want, just don't expect her to come." ha what an idoit huh? Giz (Gizmo) knows her name, and yes she does come when called, even if it is just to bite me sometimes for bothering her. LOL, I have personally changed every glider I have names, just because to me, they didn't fit what their names orginially were. I think maybe they are like us, not to many really like the names we were giving at birth and would change them if we could. So they have an opportunity to respond. I often wonder if they actually understand their name or if it is just the sound or noise that associates with that name anyhow. I know with my horses, I can call them by name or say come here boys or come here girls, and they respond, granted, they recognize the sound of my voice, and recognize if they come, there is a good chance I have a surprise in my pocket for them.

cloud9 why feel guilty for wanting to change your baby's name, do what feels good to you, and will make you more comfortable, and they will pick up on it. If momma is happy everyone is happy.

I'll answer this question on two different fronts: first as a breeder, then as an adopter of gliders who already had names smile
As a breeder, I used to name all of the joeys within a couple weeks of them coming out of pouch. I stopped doing so after a while because I realized that many owners were changing the joeys' names after adopting them. I felt it wasn't good for the joey to get used to one name and then have it changed - so now I just wait for the adopter to name the joey (unless they specifically request that I name him/her).
Now, having said that, I have adopted gliders that already have names (as well as those that I have named myself). I have tried to keep their names similar to the original name if I do change it. For instance, my Cricky was originally named Cricket. My Pika was originally named Pikachu. I adopted/rescued them together and just modified their names slightly. My Pepe was originally named Pierre, which is my father's name, so I nicknamed him Pepe. On all official paperwork, Pepe's name is still Pierre though. I have also adopted gliders that I didn't change their name even though the names are not ones I would have chosen: Gizmo and Darwin came to me with those names and although I tried to think of alternate names for them that would be similar, I hit a mental brick wall on each of them, so their names have remained Gizmo and Darwin. Since they were both adults when I got them, I didn't want to confuse them anymore than they already were with having been rehomed.
So, to make a long story short... yes, I think it's okay to rename your gliders after adoption if you desire to do so. But keep in mind that if your glider is already an adult, changing names on him/her is going to add to the stress/confusion of living in a new home... so try to change it to something somewhat similar if you can thumb

Hi everyone. Kinda new to the forum, but as a small town breeder; thought this was a good chance to address a concern. I think changing their names are expected.I also don't name mine anymore since they seem to stay then! lol. But I do expect new parents to call them their name of choice.
**But PLEASE, if you have registered your suggie, & change it's name, be sure to contact the registery to do so, also.
I have spent months getting my Queenie's (sweetest lue ever)linage straighted out. Sorting out info. that was given to the breeder, going from each breeders site to another, getting breeder to take time to double ck. their info. correct theirs, correcting mine, contacting registry, then waiting for the registry to be updated, making sure it was entered correct.
They can only enter the info. they have. Correct or not! And wrong info. is not better than none at all. It's bad for gliders, & everyone involved. It is hard enough for the registry to keep track of each glider & WE need to help them, all we can. Checking out a linage to prevent inbreeding can be next to impossible, if info. is not kept current & correct.
I ask my new parents if they decide to breed one, to get all info. on other glider as possible, if not one of mine. To find previous owner/s, why it was re-homed and to please ck with me to be sure it's not one of mine. I will help to ck it out. No matter what the color! Even a standard gray, deserves not to be inbreeded. Just check the already 'taken' names before hand.
I think breeders: listing who they were sold to on the registry would help. And parents: be obligated to register them before selling their offsprings. Of course this would take alot of updating.(am I asking to much Jennifer??) lol .
